So perhaps he did just miss a flight as reports said.
I think the flight thing was a bunch of BS. It was reported yesterday that some of the players had been in touch with him, and that he "missed a flight." I think what's more likely is some of the defensive vets got him on the phone and said, "we need you here, get your ass on a plane." Regardless I'm glad he's there today. I started this thread, but never said it was a "big deal" that Laron was initially absent. I said it's a reason for concern, but no reason to freak out. And I voted accordingly on the poll. I suppose since he's there now, it's a moot point. Springs missed OTA's last year and was great for us come game time, so I'm not worried one bit about him. |

re: Updated: Landry Reports to OTAs, Springs Still a No-Show
On a side note, I think the Santana thing is pretty funny. It was his birthday over the weekend, he made no secret that he attended multiple parties, and then he shows up yesterday puking with the "flu." And one day later he's all better and practicing. One day flu? Ha! We all know what a hangover is Santana.

Yeah pretty funny. I had a bad case of the flu myself on sunday. We all know how that goes. |

dirty thirty reported to OTAs today so you can get off his back now and just let him do his thing
Someone wake me when training camp starts.
Wake me up too! This OTA stuff is really really silly. Springs has been in the NFL for a long time and he knows what to do to get himself ready to play. Landry will be fine too. |
re: Updated: Landry Reports to OTAs, Springs Still a No-Show
what date exactly does training camp start
|
re: Updated: Landry Reports to OTAs, Springs Still a No-Show
Landry needs to be at OTA's, especially since he has a bad attitude and is out of shape. It would be awesome if he showd up today but I don't see that happening.

How can he be out of shape when he either almost or won the race against CP? And he showed up.. |

I kind of liked how Marcus Washington said before (paraphrasing) "voluntary OTA's is kind of like when your girlfriend says you don't have to get her anything for her birthday." |

Redskins personnel update Redskins 360 POSTED 1:57 PM BY David Elfin Left guard Pete Kendall did turn up for practice and drew praise from coach Jim Zorn for running wind sprints after practice a month before his 35th birthday. However, cornerback Shawn Springs and safety LaRon Landry remained AWOL. While Zorn and defensive coordinator Greg Blache said that they hadn't heard from the missing defensive backs, teammates said they had heard from them and that each had missed his flight. Running back Clinton Portis was back on the field after missing some time last month with a hip flexor. However, receiver Antwaan Randle El remained out after having a knee scoped on May 5. Safety Vernon Fox was also still sidelined after having a knee scoped a week earlier.
How can you be AWOL from a voluntary/non-mandatory event? |

That's probably the best way to describe it. Everyone says that because it's voluntary it really shouldn't matter whether they show up or not. Everybody actually knows that what the coach is saying is, I expect you to show up, but I'm not gonna call it mandatory. |
Re: Updated: Landry Reports to OTAs, Springs Still a No-Show
ya know what impresses me about this Springs awol issue?
Phillip Daniels....man that dude is positive...that guy is talkin like a coach. Check out the Redskins TV link on him on redskins.com. Man, this guy impresses me. My respect for Daniels has just gone up...great guy....solid player too. Maybe now with Erasmus potentially doing 3rd and long spot duty, guys will get off his back. |

This guy leads by example, you have to love that, no doubt and I look for him to have a solid season. He is still training/working his butt off and in great shape after 13 or so years in this league. I'm glad the plane arrived with LL, I like that he showed up for OTA's I think he will learn. He's just a young kid, we all witnessed Sean go through the growing pains his first couple of years in the NFL. I'm not so sure when the plane with Shawn pulls into DC, but I know his teammates and coaching staff want him there. It would be nice to see him show this year with all the changes to staff and such. And after hearing players and coach's speak on the issue they are putting it out there for him to be in DC, that he is missing new stuff. After thinking about it I hope as a good teammate he leaves Arizona or wherever he might be and just shows good faith and participates in these OTA's. |
Re: Updated: Landry Reports to OTAs, Springs Still a No-Show
Springs gets a pass in my book, he had a tough time last season with his dad and all, and still played great football.

How many family issues does this guy have? The Santana stuff is funny |

Re: Updated: Landry Reports to OTAs, Springs Still a No-Show
Springs is a long time vet and has proven his workouts in Arizona get him sufficiently ready for the season. I'm sure they'd rather he be in Ashburn than Arizona, but he's not nearly the concern that Landry is. If the entire team can show up but Landry can't, that says something about the man.
Or you could argue that his workouts in Arizona are not getting him "sufficiently" ready for the season, which could be contributing to his oft-injured status. I have to agree with Matty here though. If you want them to be there, make it mandatory. If it's not mandatory, then they aren't violating any rules...maybe they are not getting any extra points with players/coaches/fans, but then they aren't playing for points are they...$$$ |

Not worried about Landry. Here's what bugs me though: "Zorn said thus far he has been unable to reach corner Shawn Springs, who has not reported for this session of OTAs. Springs has been working out in Arizona and has told associates that his plan was to show up for the start of training camp but not voluntary workouts." Springs is our # 1 CB and him not being there hurts team chemistry, he's missing important info Blache is putting in now, and he's not there to help mentor the young DBs. Very selfish. Springs' Dad was a player so he's been around the NFL his whole life, he's probably a bit jaded and is putting himself before the team. His cap number is about $ 7.4M, next year it rises to $ 8.4M. Between the cap number, his injuries, and age I wouldn't expect him in a Redskins uniform next year, so he really doesn't give a crap about non-mandatory stuff IMO. His situation and Rogers' injury are the reasons I was hoping for one of the top CBs in the draft if we couldn't get Merling. Hopefully we can grab a June 1 cut for some more depth. |
Re: Updated: Landry Reports to OTAs, Springs Still a No-Show
I think Phillip Daniels made a good point in saying that Springs still has his situation with his father going on.
"I don't know if something's wrong," Daniels said. "I know he's going through a lot with his family, too. So I don't want to knock him too much until [I] get the full story, but I would love for him to be here." |

The latest I understood was that he was in a coma after a routine medical procedure and that the family was suing the hospital. I hope by a miracle he recovers from his coma and his condition hasn't worsened. If Springs is dealing with family issues, obviously family comes first, but there is no reason he couldn't contact Zorn or someone else at Redskins Park. |

Springs's absence drew strong comments from Phillip Daniels on Tuesday. "As a veteran, I would expect him to be here," Daniels said. "We need him to be a leader of that [cornerbacks] group back there. He's the oldest, so you have to show that leadership. The young guys in the secondary, they need that. Wasn't Daniels one of the players who complained a few years ago when Gibbs pretty much forced everyone to stick around for the off season stuff? I could be wrong, but it seems like a change of heart here.

Well, the circumstances are a little different. Daniels wanted to stay home and work out during their off time, but he didn't skip out on OTA's. Gibbs wanted guys there almost year round for off-season conditioning work, I can see where that would wear on guys. Plus right now we have some changes in the coaching staff and some new things are being put in under Blache. |

The NFL needs to do one of two things regarding OTA's. Either make them mandatory or do away with them all together.

Why? If a player thinks he doesen't need to attend OTA's but he still comes back ready to play why bother? If the player thinks they need the extra work then they show up. I really don't think Shawn Springs missing this is a big deal. |
Re: Updated: Landry Reports to OTAs, Springs Still a No-Show
Its not a big deal that Springs hasnt shown up, its a big deal that he cant be reached by the team. He's a pro and should act like one.

That's what I'm saying. It's no big deal but everyone makes a big deal out of it. When a guy doesn't show up everyone goes nuts. The coaches, the media and even the players say things about other players when they don't show up. If it's not mandatory then why get all bent out of shape about it? So just make it mandatory or do away with it. |
