Re: When will Jansen go?

I will say that Jansen is still a strong run blocker in this league. He's still capable of getting low and driving a guy just enough to open up a hole. But his pass protection skills appear to be completely gone.

That said, Heyer is definitely not an upgrade in pass protection, as others said he received way too much TE and RB help to be considered a reliable pass protector.

He and Jansen are about equal in pass protection at this stage - we're going to have to give either one of them a fair amount of help. But Jansen can still run block, so we stick with him.

If he still sucks this year and can't regain his form, it will definitely be time to draft some help at RT.

umm isnt that why we drafted rhinehart? they envision him to take over either the guard spot or tackle spot.

Kendall is older than Jansen. I think at the time, they envisioned him developing to replace Kendall at G, who is in the last year of his contract.

I don't think they envisioned Rinehart would replace Jansen, as the team has financially committed to Jansen for several more years.

So in the even the Skins decide to make Rinehart a permanent replacement for Jansen, we'll just need to draft a young G to take over for Kendall instead.

Either way, we're looking at drafting a young lineman next year, unless Jansen returns to form.

Lets not burn anybody at the stake yet...its preseason. I still stick to my firm belief that these guys played soft the other night to avoid getting hurt. Obviously Buges believes in hi and he is not a respected oline coach for nothing. Give him a few games....if he gets hurt again then we can start panicking.

3. Yes he's coming off a huge injury but how much time does he need?
I feel we can go round and round with the other comments, but this one stuck out to me to say something.
He needs more than a meezly 3 preseason games after having a season ending injury...to think otherwise is incredibly impatient. As others pointed out, Jansen is always a slow starter. But you totally missed a HUGE point...you either believe in Zorn or you don't. Do you, or don't you?
you either believe in Zorn or you don't. Do you, or don't you?
Don't oversimplify the argument. We can believe in Zorn as a coach, but disagree with certain decisions he makes. At least I HOPE we can, because otherwise, the first time he f's up, there's going to be 1,000,000 Fire Zorn threads.

While that is true, you still need to have faith that Zorn is going to put the best players on the field. It really is THAT simple.

I don't expect him to be perfect in that regard, as none of us would be.

A strong argument to keep JJ as the starter, but IMO it also highlights how weak we are evidently at this position when a guy who's a huge liability is still better than the alternatives. I don't know if this situation should be chalked up to poor judgment among the decision-makers or maybe a lack of legitimate starters in the draft/free-agency. Either way it's def hard to swallow for me as a fan.

Re: When will Jansen go?

I still play him, randy, and samuels and rabach have been playing not to get hurt before the big game. Jansen gets beat sure, but so does samuels so does every tackle in this league, Lets out this thread to rest until the first game when he gets injured again! The we can bitch!

sportscurmudgeon 08-27-2008 09:34 PM

Re: When will Jansen go?

If anyone thinks that Jansen is not one of the two best offensive tackles on the roster at the moment, then that person has disqualified himself/herself as an aspiring NFL scout.

If Jansen is hurt and cannot play for much/most of the season, the Redskins will be far less effective on offense. Jansen's injuries have made him less of a player than he was three years ago - - but that is true of just about every player in the NFL.

Please recall last year when various substitute RTs needed to have help from tight ends and/or fullbacks on pass protection about 90% of the time...

Re: When will Jansen go?

I bet you by the end of the year Jansen will get the ax. He continues to get injured and he cannot keep up with edge rushers in the NFC anymore.

Re: When will Jansen go?

My bet is Jensen will be released during the non cap year...as will a few others...probably M. Washington (due to age), L. Fletcher (due to age), A. Randel-El (due to better, younger receivers), R Thomas (better, younger guard).

Not sure about Portis and Samuels.

Wow you've listed like our best players. Why would we get rid of them when they still play soooo well?

doughtydoubter 08-28-2008 01:36 PM

Re: When will Jansen go?

dude im with you about the list of players, marcus, jansen..it will come a time when ther will be an uncapped year.
Long time redskins will depart some of us will shed tears.
cerrato and snyder will be licking their chops waiting eagerly to look under their christmas tree and see what they can get!
Little do they know...jerry jones and robert kraft will say.."no dan not yet"
There will be manning and brady, and calvin johnson up for the take!
There will be Chris Long, and aj hawk, and willis on dans plane with their agents seeing how much they can possibly make!
The analysts will pick us to be number 1 for once! They will start to give us props!
ALL of our players will dance with the stars, bill cowher and joe gibbs will want to call the shots.
And when the cap falls, hopefully for all of us in dc.
while we watch adrian peterson score his 50th rushing td
when mike vick is our ball boy, while we are in the big Sb
we can all sing hail to the redskins once again with glee.

man i must be on drugs today or something

definitely on drugs

Re: When will Jansen go?

More than a couple of the beck-up offensive linemen got time on the field against Jax.

I didn't see any flashes of greatness from them such that Jansen should be demoted or cut. What did I miss?

Wouldn't an uncapped year mean that there's no CBA between the players and the owners? I don't want football to go the way of baseball.

doughtydoubter 08-29-2008 09:13 AM

Re: When will Jansen go?

yeah if the league goes uncapped...it will never get capped again and thats the sad thing.
I DO think the league is flawed in the rookie pay. Still, there their needs to be a happy medium

Heyer starting in Jansens place against the Giants?
Heyer the new starter on the right side?
The Doc show is speculating that it is possibly so based on JZ's latest presser

Exactly. I'm sure Jansen will start next week, but he needs to know that if he plays bad he will lose his starting job.

Re: When will Jansen go?

If anyone listened to Zorn's presser today, the writing is on the wall for Big John. Zorn flat out said, "Heyer has a chance right now to compete for the starting position, but I'm not giving up on John Jansen yet." That to me translates to "John, step it up or it's over for you as a starter."

At least Zorn isn't afraid to change things up for the benefit of the team.

ps- it's Jon...not John.

So I guess this thread made a good prediction about Jensen...granted his not gone, but if he doesn't win his starting job back he's as good as gone.

Paintrain 09-01-2008 09:28 AM

Re: When will Jansen go?

I think it's a good move.. Heyer held up pretty well last season when he was thrown into the fire and we've seen Jansen get beaten badly in '06 and this preseason he was pretty awful. If he can provide depth at another spot (LG) as well as RT that just makes us a little deeper and gives some roster flexibility if necessary.
