I thought that a 1st, 3rd and a 6th was too much too until I thought a little more about it.

In 2009 the Cowboys have two third round picks and two 6th round picks from deals done during the last draft.

So they surrendered a first rounder for Williams. And to justify that you just have to ask what WR would be available and worthy of a first round pick in the 2009 draft?

Essentially, Dallas used thier first round pick on a WR. They just did it in October instead of April is all.

I know, three picks is a lot, but I am just trying to put it in perspective is all.
Let me say congrat's........thats a Nice Move, no matter who got him.......but yall do have other needs, to address, like at CB and OL....but Roy Will keep everyone in the Division honest........its time for Smoot, Rogers and Springs to step up.........RIGHT NOW

For all those out there that are scared and worried about this, ask yourself... WWBD?

What Will Blache Do?

Why are you more scared then he is? Do you think Carlos is cowering in the corner over this? Is Landry hiding under the bed?

Roy Williams. Big deal. If this is that big of a game changer, then we are in real trouble.

Everyone chill out and let Greg and his men do their job.

We'll play Redskin Defense... allow 17 pts... win by 3.

What more can you ask for?

The Cowboys are so stupid. This isn't going to help them. Their talent wasn't the problem. Their leadership is terrible and that all starts with their coach. Wade Philips is not a good coach. He is not going to be able to turn this team around when things start going badly.

Jerry Jones is just trying to buy a Super Bowl and its not going to work... at least not this year anyway.

The Dallas Cowboys added another big name to their star-studded roster on Tuesday, acquiring wide receiver Roy Williams from the Detroit Lions for a trio of draft picks.

In exchange for Williams, a 2006 Pro Bowler who has 29 touchdown receptions in 60 career games, the Lions received Dallas' first-, third- and sixth-round selections in the 2009 draft.

Its a great move for dallas. I think they will get rid of TO next year. Without TO, they have the worst WR corp in football.

While it doesn't solve their secondary problems, they're hoping he re-signs for long-term. He is definitely a capable replacement for a No. 1 WR once TO falls off.

I'm not sure why Dallas made this move. Roy Williams is so freakin overrated. Their other wr's seems to be fine. Romo is always throwing for 300 yards a game. They need help at corner.
Too bad Roy Williams was going to be a free agent after this season and they could have just signed him then
According to Jason Cole they signed him through 2013 as part of the trade. He's only 26. Get used to Williams being part of the Cowpuffs for years.

I think this is a good move for them. The real weakness of their offense was their #2-#5 WR's, none of whom could draw coverage from TO.

This is also bad for them. Despite the fact that they had previously stockpiled draft picks and so will still have a draft, they gave up half of a normal draft for just this one guy. And they have a bunch of needs on the defensive side of the ball. This move makes them look more like the Fouts Chargers - all offense and no defense - which can get you to the playoffs but won't win the big dance, where defense is required. And down the road they will face salary cap troubles.

He won't be up to speed in their offense until Thanksgiving or so.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas

So the Cowboys now have all these receivers, so what!! Detroit had Williams, the other Williams, Calvin Johnson and Furrey, running Martz's offense and we shut them down last year. The way to counter this move is to draft us another young CB next year or sign Asomougha.

djnemo65 10-14-2008 07:14 PM

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas

From a Cowboys hating perspective I don't mind this move. While Williams is a solid second-tier receiver - who has occasionally shown flashes of greatness - they paid a prohibitive price to acquire him. For all the talk of Williams being a "long-term replacement" this is a move that screams desperation, and win now at any cost. Also, you are adding another proven ego to a team chock full of them, when what you really need is more hungry role-players. So in getting a solid receiving threat, they give up the chance to add valuable depth to their paper thin defense. They also alienate guys like Miles Austin who have been pretty solid. I haven’t seen every Cowboys game but I’ve seen most of them, and it hasn’t seemed to me like the receivers have been the problem so far.

It will be very interesting to see how T.O. responds to this. Williams is a good receiver but this will probably cause more anguish for T.O. It looks like a move to take away from the bad press they've been getting. It should actually be a good move for T.O. if he would look at it unselfishly. Williams could open things up but somehow they'll screw it up.

With a decent #2 in Crayton and a very good #3 in Austin--I think this move was overkill for the Boys. Sam Hurd is also a good #2/3 even though he is hurt.

However, I think the Williams pickup is overall a good hedge against T.O.'s eventual decline in skills/age related injury/blowup...

Shit.

How the hell is any defense supposed to stop a tandem of T.O. and Roy Williams when you've got guys like Crayton, Austin and Witten still around?

We can mock it all we want, but I don't see how you can deny that this creates serious matchup problems for ANY defense.

Fortunately Romo and Felix Jones are out on the offensive side for a while, and hopefully Pacman has seen his last snap as a professional.

Williams wanted out of Detroit during preseason, so he got what he wanted and landed in Dallas. Team Chemistry is going to be messed up with Dallas. Roy is Mr Texas so TO better learn to live with fewer balls to catch. Detroit needed this to hopefully start a true rebuilding effort to make the team competitve finally. It also probably means Marinelli is toast after this season. Roy was great for Detroit, but with Kitna out for the year his efforts would have been wasted as the Lions don't have much of a running game to compliment the pass oriented attack. Orlovsky can't cut the mustard in the primary QB role. There is a good bet without Kitna and Williams that the Lions are going 0-16. Even with those guys they might have been able to squeeze out 2-3 wins, so the Detroit FO made the deal once Kitna was placed on IR. What this means for us is that we better have an excellent pass rush come rematch time or we just might be toast.

I know Williams is a talented guy but what has he really done so far in his career? He had one very good season in 2006 and the rest have been nothing to write home about. Good move for them but it's not going to keep me up at night. I think they gave up too much. If the Skins pulled that move Redskins nation would have a collective heart attack. They needed a DB, not another WR.

Good point, thank god they didn't trade for Nnamdi Asomuga, who was rumored to be on the block. Now that would have scared me.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas

He's a damn good receiver with potential to be great. He's been playing on a god awful team with inconsistent play all around. In '06 Kitna had 4200 yards and 21 tds, and not surprisingly Williams was really solid. His first four seasons totaled 244 catches for 3650 yards and 28 TDs. On the Lions. The Lions.

I could see him being very productive in Dallas, but with Romo's injury and TO's antics, it may be a while till we see big numbers from him.

I also think Dallas gave up too much. But a smart move for Detroit. They have Calvin Johnson, and now the potential to have 5 of the top 100 picks next year. They keep a franchise WR and significantly improve their draft each of the next two years. And with Millen no longer pulling the strings they may actually find some talent.

12thMan 10-14-2008 11:46 PM

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas

I think Roy Williams is a great individual talent. No one is doubting that. But Williams seems to be -- I say seems to be because I haven't watched him play all that often -- an up and down player and he's only had one thousand yard season as a pro.

Williams isn't known for having Santana moments. Where he completely destroys a team, like Dallas, and wins the game by himself.

Rogers and M.Williams were awful. R.Williams and C.Johnson are pro-bowl talent. Great picks talent-wise, the Lions just suck at addressing needs.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas

This is actually a pretty good move for the Cowboys. They essentially gave up a first (remember, extra 3rd n 6th means it pretty much leaves them with their original draft picks) for a guy who can come in and make their offense that much better. Roy Williams is a Pro Bowl talent and we've all seen what having two Pro Bowl wideouts can do for your offense (Harrison and Wayne in the glory days in Indy, Boldin and Fitzgerald in Arizona) so this will make Dallas' offense that much better, especially when Romo gets back. Jerry made this move because in all seriousness that offense was going to be lacking with Hurd gone for the season, Romo gone for a month, and Jones out for two weeks. This move pretty much vaults them up the pack again to SB contenders.

Not to mention Detroit gets an extra first rounder next year that they can help to use with their rebuilding effort (I figure Marinelli won't last beyond this year at the rate he's going, and they will hire a new GM/coach after this season.

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas

I think there is justification on the Cowboys side, a first round pick for a pro bowl WR is good value but this still looks like a look at me trade .

Possibly one things that wasn't broken on that team was the passing game . The Run game with Barber as the feature back was always going to be in trouble if teams keyed on him , the defense is thin so boulstering a strength can some times be a smart thing .

Does it make them superbowl contenders .....not any more than they were a week ago . Someone still neads to get the ball to Williams or Owens . I think WR is a very over rated possition in the scheme of things . Look at the teams with the best WRs (Cincy, Indy and Arizona) and they have one SB between them . Balance is what it is all about . They had a great WR in Terry Glenn and that got them what exactly ?

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas

roy is good, but not nearly in the league of moss, TO, or andre johnson (or plex, or those two guys in AZ), and going forward calvin johnson and edwards will be better...

he's a crazy #2 (but still not the best - see Q in AZ or harrison/wayne in indy), but if it's really a 1,3 and 6, it's too much for one year or multiple years with heaps of new money. plus, adding him to the TO-centric offense... well, maybe TO gets a bit jealous.

sandtrapjack 10-15-2008 07:50 AM

Re: Breaking News Roy Williams Traded to Dallas

Well I was concerned about TO's reaction as well. But from all reports, the GM mentioned the trade to Owens as is was being done and Owens was (quote) "ECSTATIC".

Then when the deal was finalized, reporters spoke with Roy Williams and he said the first call he got was from TO. So we will see I guess.

But as far as the deal goes it was not really all that bad. Yeah 3 draft picks sounds like a lot. But believe it or not yesterday morning when the Cowboys were getting their breakfast, they had 10 total draft picks for the 2009 draft.

After the trade was done at the end of the day, Dallas had nine draft picks for the 2009 draft. They only gave up one draft pick.

Because of Pacman's suspension, the Cowboys received the Titans 5th round pick. That was s stipulation of the trade.

Dallas already had two-3rd round picks (Cleveland) and two-6th round picks (Miami, Jason Fergeson trade).

So Dallas sends their first, third and 6th rounder for Williams. Chances are the 3rd and 6th round picks from Cleveland and Miami are going to be higher anyway.

And Dallas got a 7th rounder from Detroit.
