I know everyone is freaking out about how bad the skins played, we have to remember they are 6-3. When "experts" say the outcome of the game is decided by a handful of plays- in this case its true. If you look at the 40 yard (questionable) pass interference call and the blocked punt, here are two plays that cost them 14 points. You take that from the final score and you cant say the steelers played that much better than the skins. The defense did their job.
I agree with everything except the questionable pass int call,it was def pass int |
Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
Why is everyone harping on Campbell?
Coverage was great downfield, Moss was hampered by his injury, the oline pass blocking was poor. Campbell is AWESOME when we win, and its ALL HIS FAULT when we lose. Face it, we were dominated. I lay this TREND at the hands of the offensive coordinator, ZORN. I am not suprized, he said it himself. Defenses will catch up to what his is doing, this happened about 4 games ago, when we started struggling with teams like the rams, lions, browns....c'mon man... Our defense is solid, the issue is the offense. Bottom line is, Zorn did not adjust, pregame or halftime, to account for the Pitt defense PLUS he abandoned the run. I mentioned it in the predictions thread. The only way to win this was with Shotgun, draws, reverses, screens, misdirection, runs up the gut....that is how you slow down a fiery defense. My only question was how Moss and Samuels would hold up. Unfortunately, Zorn did almost none of this....I only remember one or two screens and a couple draws. This is why I gave Zorn a 3.5 of 5....he is not tested yet, he has not stayed ahead of the curve, Defensive coordinators have figured out how to play this offense.....we are still 2nd in the league in rushing yet only 25 in Points. I say it is time to add some new plays and players to the mix....we haven't seen any production from our top 3 picks....time to MAN UP. and C'mon Zorn, call a play thats not on film yet. And I also throw Special Teams in here, they have generally stunk...except kicker. Did you see that Pittsburg Gunner on the punts? He was beating 2 blockers every time causing randle el to fair catch everything....and if there was no punt blocked, we'd easily be in the game...this is easily Danny Smiths crappiest coaching year here, he aint helping...thank goodness we recovered that onside kick, I am suprised that we did based on who was on the field to attempt the recovery...lucky.
great post except I disagree on the last part, from what I recall there were at least 2 times, maybe 3 where ARE called for the fair catch and nobody was within 10 yrds of him |
Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
Thomas cut off his route which led to the 2nd pick last night. I know we want to see him do well but when you can't do the basics on the field you're just not going to get many looks.
I just read an article by Gary Fitzgerald that says the second interception was on a pass intended for Thrash not Thomas and there was a miscommunication.Washington Redskins It's under "A Tough Night For Campbell" |
Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
Oh man, I didn't hear that specifically. That's really bad. Come on Devin. All that physical talent and he can't learn the playbook? Grrrrrr.
Sounds like Rod Gardner 2.0. Let's hope he turns it around.

It really demonstrates that the Giants are the most complete team in the league, having more than twice the offensive red zone posessions as their opponents. |
Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
we had one big blowout 2 years ago against the giants where they beat the crap out of us. We made the playoffs beat tampa then lost to seattle.we have to beat the giants on the road in the playoffs to get to the superbowl. Is this team good enough? Not right now. but if we can start rolling come playoff time we have a chance

Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
we need a good enough record so we dont HAVE to play the first playoff game on the road CAROLINA

Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
People longing for the deep ball have obviously missed the hiring of Jim Zorn, a west coast disciple. Moss with a bad hammy didn't help matters last night either, along with the constant pressure.
I'm not buying the WCO stuff. That's just an excuse. Philly has worse WR's than we do yet they always push the ball downfield. Hell, just do it just for the sake of a PI call. Pittsburgh was missing two starters on their line, their QB was getting pushed around, yet they did it and got a PI call which changed field position, plus got a long completion on Smoot. Devin Thomas runs 4.3 and is 6'2. I think he can handle running a go route. Sorry but not throwing downfield at all is just poor coaching. |
Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
Straight from this morning's Washington Times:
In the last five games, the Redskins have only one first-half touchdown - a 3-yard drive - in 32 possessions. That is astounding. The defense is effectively keeping us in every game while the offense hasn't held up its end, even against below average teams (Rams, Browns, Lions). We've gotten virtually nothing from our three receivers drafted in the 2nd round, and now Moss is gimpy once again. What changes (strategic, personnel, etc.) would you like to see from Zorn after the bye to address the lack of 1st half scoring? I will volunteer two personnel moves - I don't see what Yoder gives the offense that Fred Davis wouldn't give and then some. I also would like to see Heyer starting at RT to help stabilize the pass protection.
A freakin' men. Yoder is useless. Davis gives us more playmaking ability. Shawn Springs was on the radio talking about how Davis tears it up in practice. What are the coaches waiting for?? Get him on the field now! |
Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
devin thomas will contribute at some point. The problem is he is contributing to the opposing defence. all the talent in the world wont help if you cant read and understand the playbook!!

Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
that was pretty sorry to see all those steeler fans in our stadium.Have to give them props for showing up though.remember the superbowl the seahawks were alone in a sea of terrible towels.HOW did they get all those tickets to our game????bunch of sellouts

Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
I dont know that we need to overhall the offense. we are 10th in the NFL, yardage wise. We seem to stall once we get in the redzone. Fred Davis, Cooley have not been utilized in the redzone as much as i think they should. some roll outs may help. But we also have committed some penalties in that area that need to be addressed. I hope M. Kelly is active the second half of the season. With his size and ability to go up and get the ball will be VERY helpful. I would like to see Sellers used a little more as well. I think this is just a growing thing that will get better with time.

Re: A Very Troubling Statistic
about taking shots with the long ball - zorn has been asked about that a few times after the games leading up to the steelers game and he said they did call plays to take shots down field then he goes on specifically identify plays they did call it and gave a reason for why it didnt get thrown (pass protection) or wasnt completed (out of bounds).
also zorn said he probaly gave up on the run to early in the steelers game, i believe the run sets up the big pass plays and with no real run threat what you can do is limited. like most of you all, i like being 6-3 but as we have proven before a 4-6 or 4-5 team can have a great late season push for the playoffs so we must think that us, eagles and cowboys are all 0-0 with a 7 game season ahead of us. i look forward to some hard fought meaningfull football in the second half. go skins!!!! |

Complete some passes, move the chains, and then when the defense starts to back off the attack, go for the jugular.
We failed in the basic phases of the game well before the lack of a deep passing game became a problem. |

Leftwich came out throwing in the second half and THEN they more or less started rolling. Pittsburgh had not really established anything UNTIL they started throwing the ball. There is also the possibility of the pass setting up the run. Maybe it's not conventional, but sometimes it works. |

Lets not forget that first interception. That was bullshit, he was cleary not in control of the ball...damn reffes |

They saw straight man coverage so many times that they could attack us however they wanted. Blache called one of the worst games i've ever seen a d-coordinator call.
Remember that even in our injured state, our defense is significantly more talented than their offense. |

Blache did all he could with having a banged up secondary. I would put more of the blame on Rodgers for dropping that game changing INT (for sure he would have returned it for a TD) and Fred Smoot getting beat on that first bomb from Leftwich. Their offense isn't too shabby either, we must give them credit. Hines Ward is about as consistent as anybody in the league, and Santonio Holmes is beggining to come into his own as well. Our offense is what cost us the game, for some reason we always seem to stall out around the opponents 40 yard line, just out of FG range. We just need to work on not shooting ourselves in the foot with all the penalties and such. |

All I'm saying is you can't be one dimensional and sometimes you have to take a shot. Surprisingly I watched WPL today and Doc Walker was saying the same thing. You can't play scared all the time or be afraid of making a mistake. Give it a shot. It seems we wait until the end of a game to start trying to go deep and hell, they're looking for it then. |

In the second half, we couldn't defend third down and long at all and it's because they kept a guy in to pick up our blitzes that they knew were coming, and made easy completions against man coverage down the field. It was totally asinine.
We also decided not to cover the running back, which gave them free third down conversions. We might as well have just committed personal fouls the whole night, at least then we would have gotten our money's worth. And yeah, we defended Roethlisberger much better, but that's on Ben. Blache has to know how to adjust when they switch QBs. |
