Re: P90x
Just be careful with the Ranch dressing...even if fat free, could have a ton of calories. If not fat free...look out.
(I admit, I love Ranch myself, usually mix some hot sauce into it) |
Re: P90x
can you get away with only bands or do you think weights will be pretty important in the routine? i was watching a couple youtube videos of power 90/p90x shocker there was a huge ad for mcdonalds nuggets while the video was playing i'm just now getting back into shape, i'm using alli right now and doing cardio but i really want to start working muscles into my routine, i've lost about 20lbs in the first month with alli, it's all about cutting out fat in your diet, it's hard at first but once you get going for a while it's not too bad
I'm sure you could stick to bands only if you're looking to just tone up. Obviously if you want to add some muscle and/or if you want a more intense workout weights are needed. But it's really up to you and what you want to get out of the program. I mostly use weights but I'm mixing in the bands for the more difficult stuff and when I'm gassed. |
Re: P90x
alcohol is a killer there is no way i can give it up but i have cut it down to pretty much just red wine
as far as snacks go fuit and veggies is what i go to, somethimes with some salad dressing to dip into. kraft actually makes some great fat free dressings, and life savers has a bunch of fat free and suger free hard candies they are a really good too
yeah red wine or straight gin or vodka mostly here now, keeps me from having too much as well |
Re: P90x
One thing i am not doing is pull ups. Im 6'2" and have even longer arms for someone my height. Pull up bars in door jams dont work for me. The resistant bands can replace a lot of stuff, but its also half cheating.

Look it up on you tube and you can see folks using the program. Right now I am focused on the gym and the one hundred push up challenge. one hundred push ups If you are looking for a new routine try Body for Life. I have had great results with that, also I don't go at night anymore I am more energized in the morning and if you read body for life you will learn if you exercise, cardo, in the morning your body is forced to use your stored calories (fat). You actually wait an hour after your workout before eating breakfast.
If you do not have shoulder / rotator cuff problems , these " blast straps" are awesome for push ups ... Re: P90x
GM thanks for your insights.
My family and I generally try to do all our shopping at Whole Foods, you be so surprised how much better that food makes you feel. I try to think that 95% of the week my food intake is fuel, so I want the best fuel for my body, 5% is for taste/enjoyment that usually equates to a fatty lunch Friday and going out to eat Fri and/or Sat night. Today I went with a buddy for lunch and he wanted Mexican . I had a quesidilla (sp) and refried beans. I feel like crap right now and I will probably have too shortly as well. It is getting to the point with me now that the taste is not worth the feeling afterward. |
Re: P90x
I have P90x and did about 70 days of it about a year ago. It's the real deal and it's alot of work. Go figure, you do actually have to work hard and eat right to lose weight.
I was impressed. The only thing for me was after working out 5 or 6 days a week I would contantly be hungry. I couldn't eat enough food. I tried to keep it relatively healthy but still had to have some mexican every couple weeks. I still do alot of the training videos thru P90 x b/c it's a good workout. I'm just not working out 6 days a week now. |
Re: P90x
That is my fear with p90x you do all that work then what? No one could live that lifestyle for very long. It is not a realistic for life program.
|
Re: P90x
It's not really meant to be a do this for the rest of your life program. It's a lot easier to maintain than to get it there. Plus you may come up with new goals by then.
It's the same as any other get in shape program, you can't do it and then ride it out, it's about a lifestyle change. |
Re: P90x
They do have some maintenance programs and a lot of people will just go through the program over and over. You could of course dial it back to 3-4 days a week once you're at a level you want.

This were I think Body for Life plays out better in long term fitness but to each is own.

That dude has "BO DUKE" tattooed on his knuckles. :D
I bought it a year or so ago , freakin shoulder and upper chest were sore for the better part of the week . I rarely feel sore in the days following a workout . I had to back off , to once a week with the damn thing , but it is a nice tool to have . Didn't notice the " BO DUKE " . |
Re: P90x
I can see how those straps would give you a killer workout. You're probably working all sorts of muscles just to stabilize yourself.
|
Re: P90x
I've checked out P90X and Body For Life. Body for like is what I started using before I got serious with the weights. After a few months of weights P90X didn't seem like anything to me. We had the quarterdeck back in my day, and it made P90X look like strawberry shortcake.
I guess it would depend on what you're doing or what you want to get out of working out. P90X would be good for someone who regularly works out moderatly who wants to step it up. I only watched one CD of it from my buddy. It seemed kind of boring really. |

My shoulders , and the area where your chest and shoulders tie in , were sore for a damn week the first couple of times I used them . Very effective included with a sound routine , I think I'am going to buy a set of kettlebells this summer . |

I've been using kettlebells for a few months now and I definitely recommend them. Killer workout, really improves your core strength and fast too. |

Weight loss and/or muscle building itself is more about diet then anything else, thats where people really need to make lifestyle changes. Aside from actual experience I can tell you that in looking at the numbers your best chance to loose weight is through eating right unless you're one of those people that can't gain weight no matter what in which case you need to start scoffing down pizzas and the like (dead serious) if you want to gain size. You can't out work a big mac or a regular 400 calorie meal for the most part, I mean you could but it'd be hard to just burn 400 or 500 calories a day on exercise. It's much easier to just not eat 400 calories. Also you need to eat the right kinds of foods. Eating foods with low GI ratings will assure that you get the nutrients you need on a calorie deficit and burn more calories due to the extra effort in digestion. Protein is really important to for keeping on muscle mass. I think that the one thing people don't under stand is that exercises main attribute is NOT weight loss. Exercise does other things for you like improve endurance, sense of well being, muscle tone, heart health, and athletic performance. However for the most part it's far fetched to expect exercise to significantly contribute to weight loss, at least to the extent that eating right will help you. Probably the best thing you can do for yourself exercise wise is build muscle to prevent your metabolism from dropping to much on a calorie deficit. Also running for heart health isn't a bad idea either. In terms of weight loss through exercise becomes much more important when you're getting near the single digits in terms of body fat and every calorie in and out truly starts to count. In the end you have to think of it this way. The diet is the jackhammer, thats going to get rid of most of the fat (or build muscle if thats your goal). A program like P90X (which actually seems like a pretty good program) is more like a scalpel in that it will build muscle and sculpt your body so when you do loose the desired amount of fat you'll look better as opposed to just starving yourself (which you should never do by the way). Sorry for the rant it's just that I kind of feel like this needed to be said.
I've been using kettlebells for a few months now and I definitely recommend them. Killer workout, really improves your core strength and fast too.
I personally love kettlebells as a cardio hybrid. Much more fun and quicker then running on a treadmill for hours on end. On top of that it not only spares muscle but brings with it the potential to increase it. They're probably pretty amazing to from an athletic perspective but I'm no longer an athlete. Wish I knew about them though when I was playing football. Right now I workout with them in 5 minute increments with 40 seconds of work and 20 seconds of rest. Two sets of snatches (one left one right), one set of pull throughs, and two sets of cleans (one left one right). Actually I would recommend a $50 or $70 kettlebell (heavier kettlebells cost more) before paying the $120 for P90X. I think you could get amazing results with just a kettlebell by itself so long as you're eating right for your bodytype. |
Re: P90x
I haven't experienced anything that gets your heart rate up as quickly as with a KB. It's a great compact workout, about 20-25 minutes is all you really need.

Re: P90x
Also, to quote Dirtbag, the most basic way to lose weight is calories in and calories out.
You could exercise your ass off (cardio weight lifting, running, etc.), eat crap and lose weight. You could also not work out a bit and eat correctly and still lose weight. It's just about burning more than you put in your body. Exercise definitely does just that. |

Re: P90x
7 days in to the Power 90 program and I'm feeling pretty good. The workouts aren't overly difficult but you definitely work up a good sweat. If you can commit to anything 6 days per week you're bound to see some results.

My shoveling of the Blizzards of 2010 derailed me a bit with my current workout for that week. I was so damn sore from shoveling. hopefully you don't have much shoveling to do that it interferes with power 90. In the end you are still burning calories. |

Oh the same for all of my older neighbors as well because they guilt me into doing it. that is a nice perk considering where you live, usually you get perks like that in a Florida HOA. |
How sore are you after 7 days?
Also what kind of general shape are you, prior to starting?
After 7 days... no soreness at all. I was sore and stiff after the first 2 workouts, but then I took an off day, and the following workout after that I was fine. I feel like after day 4 I kinda broke through that wall. I would say I was in moderately good shape to start with. 3-4 trips to the gym per week, usually 30 minutes a shot on the elliptical or stair climber, some weights, kettlebells, etc. After 11 days with this program I'm already feeling in much better shape, endurance and strength wise. |

My Power 90 Blog
looks like you are still going strong, i'm on my sixth day and i can't wait for the rest day, i feel like i should have used it earlier since i'm pretty damn sore mostly quads and triceps. i can definitley feel and see it working, i didn't have much weight to lose i just wanted to try and get some definition. and the bands are actually kicking my ass those things are a bitch, i might break down and buy a set of multiple weighted dumbbells, anybody have any recomendations on a set that isn't too expensive but aren't pos either? |
Re: P90x
^^If you're feeling worn out take the rest day, especially when you're starting out. I took my first rest day on day 3, I really needed it and it definitely helped.
Are you doing P90X? |
Re: P90x
power 90, i'm taking my rest day tomorrow, and i really need it. there is no way i could handle p90x after watching some of the videos, i honestly dont' think i could ever be that motivated. i'm real surprised at how fast the workouts go by, it's really not too bad. you would think that that jackass tony would know his own routines he still gets me everytime when he f's up the cardio workout, can't skip the side kicks. i definitley need to bring my ipod for the next workout though can't take much more of that music and i'm getting most of it down pat.
