I think Jordan Cross would be an ideal free agency move. Bring in Shane Lechler and let Plackmeier Kick.
I can't see us picking up too many so called stars in free agency because it will come to bite us in the butt in about four years.
I would like to see Matt Cassel come in though to replace Collins if he doesn't return. You'd have two guys waiting in the number two spot to take over if JC doesn't work out. Next year is his last year as starter or on the team if he doesn't improve. He has improved and I'm not calling for his head yet . . . .
I'd steer away from too many FA additions because the FO hasn't had too much luck with it over the years.
Wait, you want to convert a punter (Plackemeier) into a kicker and bring in Matt Cassel who has just come off of a season that's probably going to get him franchised or close to franchise money from some team and a starting job for him to backup Jason Campbell. Vinny, is that you?

True, I doubt they will get Sproles. My point was more that Jacobs and Portis do not compliment one another...you need one of those 2 in combination with a homerun threat

Good move on their part. If Brady has to have scar tissue removed that was left behind by infection, there's a chance he won't play next year. They get Cassell for one more year and then can decide next year what to do at the QB position.

THESE ARE THE GUYS I PRIZE IN 2009
Darren Sproles, (speed and a change of pace back for Portis to take a breather)
T.J. Houshmandzadeh, (dependable quality possesion reciever)
Jordan Gross, (Good solid tackle and move Jansen inside to gaurd)
Nnamdi Asomugha, Along with Hall we will have an improved situation in the secondary to make moves and get younger)

Albert Haynesworth
(My favorite inside beast, good player on and off the field, I know as I live outside of Nashville and see it every week!) We get this guy and the ends will be pro-bowlers!!!

a pick up or two of these guys and we should be good for 2009!!!

I never would have thought that I'd be so jazzed about a kicker, but GET LECHLER. Dude has a serious leg on him.

They could tag and trade Cassell also though. It gives them some leverage. For example, suppose Favre retires and the Jets go after Cassell. Well now he won't come without a steep price to a division rival
Jordan Gross
Darren Sproles (Trade Rock or Betts,I love the Rock but Sproles can do so much more, Madden called him the best 3rd down back in the league and we had problems on 3rd down)
Shane Lechler (best punter in the league)
Jonathan Vilma
I'm 100% w/ you on Sproles. I'd make him high on the list. I just don't think SD is going to let him get away w/ LD seemingly on the down side on his career.

celts32 01-04-2009 08:23 PM

Re: 2009 Free Agents

Gross & Lechler should be priority. I would use a draft pick on a RB like Sproles...may not be as good but RB's can step right in and play and although Betts is a good backup he does not provide a change of pace from Portis.

Had'nt thought of that. Good point. Either way it's to their advantage. I guess that's why they're always in the thick of things.

I heard on the radio ( it was either Mort or Clayton) that NE is planning to tag Cassell and pay him 14mil next year in case Brady isn't ready. He said that they're not worried about paying him that much money because they're already way under the cap.... plus it goes up some next year.

It's obvious that whoever the GM who said this about Sproles doesn't know jack. You can't measure physical stature for heart. Maybe the GM was Vinny? By the way Sproles reminds me of young Brian Mitchell.

Adam Schefter
Chargers face pricey decision with RB Sproles

After making one key running back decision last offseason, the Chargers now will be forced to make another.

Last year, rather than look to do the unthinkable and consider trading franchise running back LaDainian Tomlinson, San Diego let his backup Michael Turner leave for the Atlanta Falcons.

Now, after a season in which Tomlinson fought injuries and reduced production, Chargers mighty-mite running back Darren Sproles is poised to become a free agent. One NFL executive e-mailed Sunday morning: “Be careful spending money on the guy. He is small, 200 pounds, and if he gets the money, can he hold up and deliver for 16-plus games?”

Still, every time Sproles has been questioned at any level, he has produced. The Chargers were questioned for allowing Turner to leave. They will be questioned again if they allow Sproles to leave.

San Diego cannot afford to let Sproles go, but it will be awfully pricey to get him to stay.

I just don't know how they would let him go. With all the talk about this being a 2back league and how you need one RB to spell/compliment the other, don't they have the ideal situation at that position? If he didn't prove how important he is to the Chargers last night, he never will. They would not still be in the playoffs without him.

Re: 2009 Free Agents

Why would we need Sproles again?

Betts was just signed last year.

I know that Sproles fits the flavor of the offseason taste that the front office loves so much but does he really fit into our long term plans? And if he does then why was Betts signed within the year?

...It's a certainty that Sproles has no place on the Skins next year and shouldn't even be a FA target.

Because Betts isn't an explosive playmaker, doesn't represent a 'change of pace' and is very much a lesser version of Portis. Betts was re-signed 2 years ago when Portis was coming off his season of injuries and Betts had a decent stretch of games. Betts is effective if he's a 15+ carry per game type of guy but he's doesn't have the potential to change the game every time he touches the ball like Sproles.

plackemeyer (sp?) may not get some booming punts but towards the end of the season he was dropping the ball inside the 10 when in position. in the eagles game he placed 4 in a row inside the 10 in the second half which could have very well been the difference in a W or L.

i love a good punter, feagles was the man last year but id take a guy who can punt a dead ball inside the 10 over a boomer any day.

I see a lot of people wanting the Skins to sign Jordan Gross but wouldn't the Panthers:

1.) Try and resign him to a long term contract before he hits the open market?

2.) If the Pantehrs can't agree to a contract extension wouldn't they just use the Franchise Tag on him?

No, this isn't Vinny or Danny. Those guys don't listen or post. He he he
My only thoughts on free agency are this: Don't blow a lot of money and get guys that can start. Cross and Lechler can start. Yeah Cassel is a far shot. My point was he can start, can Colt?
I like B Mitch's man up policy. If you can't practice you can't play. If Campbell or Portis go down who's up? I hear Charlie Batch is available? He's better than Colt and has a lot of experience. He's got a few more years in the tank then TC and can play until Colt's ready if JC should get hurt. Does he play the WCO? No, but neither can half of this team or we'd be in the play-offs.

Lechler is definetly an upgrade over plac. and when were pinned within our own 20 and punt youll see why. SLs a placement guy as well.

I think the only P/K free agents worth mentioning are Mike Nugent and Lechler. I wonder if the team would try to sign either one of these players. Nugent was a decent kicker, injuries just got in the way. I hope we get a solid kicker.

They franchised him last year and he has said he wants to try the open market.

Gross is the only FA pickup I'd want.

Rypper - unless they agreed in the one year contract extension that the Panthers would not place the franchise tag on him this year I thought the Panthers have this option. does anyone know if this was a stipulation in the one year extension Gross signed ladt year?

I have a bad feeling that we are not smart enough to sign Lechler. Punter is not a sexxy enough position to get Snyderatto's free agency dollars. I really hope I am wrong...

I personally think picking up one of these studs would put our good defense over the top and give us an elite defense. The question is which would you guys prefer?? Both around the same age Peppers 28 and Hayneworth 27

I would say Peppers...he had a down year last year, but has bounced nicely. Unlike Haynesworth, I think Peppers has been a bit under the radar, and I do like the fact that Peppers has been pretty consistent (save for last year), unlike Haynesworth. Both Carter and Taylor are in their 30s, and having Peppers along with Taylor or Carter would give us some time to develop a young DE (hopefully through the draft).

I still think that we need a better DT, however I think Haynesworth has higher risk of becoming a bust than Peppers; furthermore, there are a few character issues with Haynesworth.

Definately Peppers, Haynesworth seems more like one of the criminals that play for Dallas.

I think we could pick up a decent DT to bring into the Montgomery/Golston competition, and bring Peppers as the big free agent sign. Here are some DTs that are going to be free agents:

Rocky Bernard, Seattle
Jonathan Babineaux, Atlanta
Jovan Haye, Tampa

Rocky Bernard had put up some good stats (better than any of our DTs), and I wonder if the Zorn-Seattle connection would come into play here. I think Babineaux and Haye had good stats too.

I would go with Dansby, Vilma is a MLB and will most likely command more money on the market than Dansby.
