I doubt ARE is a realistic trade possibility. No one wants to give up a draft pick for an overpaid east-west punt returner. They might sign him to a one or two million dollar deal if he's an UFA but trade bait....na.
JC seems possible but they seem intent on giving him a shot. Cooley would be safe if Vinny was still here but this is a new regime. Still the word around Redskin park is that Shanahan is looking forward to incorparting two tight end sets. Personally I can't believe they're giving Portis another shot. I'd rather try and find the next great nobody in Shanahan's offense then give a bunch of carries to Portis.
Doesn't mean we're keeping Portis forever, just they make think that with what we have to work with, it's more important to focus elsewhere at the moment. It could also mean whoever we bring in/draft, etc might not be a day 1 starter, which wouldn't be anything unheard of. |
Re: RI: Allen: 'We're going 100 mph getting ready for free agency'
A couple of good games from Fred Davis and suddenly the best player on our team becomes expendable. It annoys me. We'd have to get a REALLY sweet offer to part with Cooley. I like Fred Davis a lot, but I'd also love to see some two TE sets with both of them on the field together. Hell, they may be our two best pass catchers right now.
I get that, especially with the injury, giving him a productive year could up his value; not that I want Cooley to go by any means. |
this is depressing..."changing offense, changing defense", can someone say rebuilding. Hopefully its not a 4-12 season
well it's rebuilding or "continuity" one of the two seems to be very popular each offseason |

What is there to be depressed about? Are you going to miss 12-20 the last 2 years? |
Re: RI: Allen: 'We're going 100 mph getting ready for free agency'
Even though BA said he's looking forward to having portis or what ever he said, it still doesn't mean we're keeping him, I mean what else would he say? "No clinton's in the past we're trading him"? I see this year in and year out in the NFL.
Also I do look forward into going deep into FA and getting a bunch of players because this team needs an offseason rebuilding like the dolphins had two years ago and the saints had the year they signed brees. (miami 1-15 to 10-6 playoffs; New orleans 3-13 to 10-6 playoffs) they brought in a load of players and replaced them with a load of players.
There will be approximately 212 players that without a new CBA will be RFA as opposed to UFA. There's not going to be a great deal to chose from without giving up DP for UFA, With only five DP available in this years draft, I'm sure the interest in UFA will be limited if at all. |
Re: RI: Allen: 'We're going 100 mph getting ready for free agency'
You know, I am not upset about changing the offense, but I am not sold on changing the defense. All signs point towards moving to a 3-4 defense. Personally I do not like the 3-4 and never have. Personal preference I guess, but I believe that it is easier to run gut, power, and dive plays on against the double bubble. In my opinion that makes us more vulnerable against the Giants and Brandon Jacobs who have basically owned our asses for the past decade. On the flip side we should be more competative defensively against Philly and Dallas with that defense, but I thought that we were already pretty good against those guys. I don't know maybe I'm still depressed about the last ten years but the defense wasn't as broke as the offense last year so I don't understand the need to change everything. Of course if we start winning it will change my mindset completely. Until then I am skeptical about the change of defensive scheme.

Unless we could be fortunate enough to land a player like Vince Wilfork who could be available and is a true NT. That's the major position for concern when thinking of the switch to a 3-4. Not convinced Haynesworth could be counted on to play the position. Changing both the offense and the defense is going to be a team in transition at least for a while until all the various principle's have been throughly adopted. |
Re: RI: Allen: 'We're going 100 mph getting ready for free agency'
I'm honestly open to any change at this point. For the first time in a while I feel like we're in good hands. Ok, I honestly can't remember the last time I felt like we were really in good hands. Even with Gibbs we still had Vinny looming over things like a black cloud. Onward and upward!!
Bruce Allen repeatedly have described our aim as "playing Redskins football." Does anyone know exactly what Allen means by that phrase?
Dan Snyder - when Zorn's firing was announced -“This has been an extremely difficult season for our organization and for the fans. Bruce Allen spent many hours examining the football operations, and we are both determined to do whatever it takes to build a championship team. That process begins today. Bruce Allen - "I just know that last place is not Redskins football," "Last place two years in a row is not Redskins football." Dan Snyder - After the win in Dallas (that seems oh so long ago) - "Redskins football is violent, physical, violent f****** football! If we play that way we will win...if we don't...we will lose. " Basically, Dan has a vision of what football should be and he calls it Redskins football, Bruce Allen is simply echoing the team owner's desire to play hard nose, winning football. |
Re: RI: Allen: 'We're going 100 mph getting ready for free agency'
As I understand it, the Redskins have no plans to even entertain trade offers for Cooley. That could change of course. They do want to add some picks though.
That said, "formulating early trade ideas" is a bit misleading. He said it was standard practice for NFL execs attending Super Bowl week to interact with each other, discuss possible trades, do some "scouting/recruiting" discuss league issues (i.e. labor agreement). They're formulating trade ideas just like every other team not named the Saints or Colts is doing this week
Good points. Even though I wouldn't be against them at least hearing offers for CC, I can see why they don't feel the need to go down that road. |
Re: RI: Allen: 'We're going 100 mph getting ready for free agency'
I would hate to lose Cooley. Not only is he a gamer with...TALENT. He seems to be well grounded in the reality between team loyalty and the business side of the NFL.

at 100mph, that means the Redskins will have covered 67,200 miles when FA starts. If the circumference of the Earth at the equator is 24,900 miles, that means the Redskins will have travelled around the globe just about 3 times (or a quarter of the way to the moon) to find Redskins Football players! Of course, BA may have been speaking figuratively, but maybe not :-) |

So do you want to keep the old crappy offense? We're 4-12, w/ a new coaching staff, thats what they do. If it takes a year or two of bad teams to have 10 years of success isn't that worth it? |

I don't think GMScud's post merited such a response. Telling him to relax when you're the one who called it depressing seems a bit odd. And calling him a dumbass is equally ridiculous. Weak post all around |

take it easy buddy. you should have done a better job of explaining yourself in your first post. your first post makes you sound as if your disappointed that the skins are changing things up. i think as a skins fan you should be excited that the skins are bringing in a new gm and a proven head coach along with a new staff. the skins could not continue with vinny, zorn and company. |

Take some of your own advice, my friend. :confused- The Redskins can't do any worse than the past decade. We do throw enough money around to attract enough talent here to finish mediocre every year. Think positively, the Saints did a total overhaul with a top 5 pick, new coaching staff, and are about to win the SuperBowl on Sunday..:pimp: |
