Well my kids don't lick their balls or ass so there is a difference. I always get a good laugh when I watch a dog licking themself then run over and start to lick their owners in the face.

This had me busting out laughing, LOL.

Ultimately the food your dog can tolerate is going to be an individual thing. Just like for people. Some dogs have iron stomachs and can take anything, others get the runs from nothing.

There's a tendency for people to blame the dog food when something goes wrong with the dog, but typically there's an underlying medical condition that's to blame.

I've heard of quality problems with certain dog foods (unsanitary conditions at the processing plant, etc.), but if you do some research and find the dogfoods with decent records, from there it's just a matter of finding the one that agrees with your pet's stomach. There's no food that will make them live longer or anything like that. Genetics have a much greater influence on longevity than the food does.

Same goes for humans, too. My grandmom smoked unfiltered cigs for 55 years, was an alcoholic, had hypertension, ate like shit, and lived to be 89. Go figure.

Re: What Pet Food You Use?
Well that doesn't make a lot of medical sense. The food does not result in greater immunity to bladder infections, unless the food contains antibiotics.

I think the bladder infection thing was just a coincidence.
Are you saying that there can be no bacteria in the cheaper food? That's actually believed to be one of the leading causes of bladder infection in pets. Storing the food poorly or adding moisture and letting sit easily help spread the bacteria which is often E. Coli

That wouldn't make sense for mredskins' situation, he said he tried 15 different foods until it settled down. Not all of them were contaminated.

Was using Nutro Natural Choice dry dog food that I would add water to. Now I use Pedigree. Two reasons.... cheaper by about $20 for same size bag and in most food stores.

Re: What Pet Food You Use?

Working at Petsmart, in the breakroom there's a chart that identifies the grade of food you can provide dogs and cats. Here's a gist of it:

Low grade - Kibbles n Bits, Chef Michael, Cesar, Pedigree, Mighty Dog, Dog Chow, Alpo

Medium Grade - Science Diet, Iams, Eukaneuba, Nutro, Beneful

High Grade - Blue Buffalo, Authority, Nature's Recipe and other organic dog food.

My manager used to say that feeding your dogs anything from the low grade food category, was like the equivalent of humans eating Chinese Food all the time. It's food and it gets the job done, but it's not the best for you.

Personally, Science Diet seems to treat most dogs and cats pretty well. I convinced my friend to switch over from buying to store brand Walmart food, and she noticed a definite difference in her dog's poop quality and general well being.

Wise choice! Dogs are a lot of work. I have two and love them but once they move on to a better place it will take a ton of convincing to get me to get another ever again.
yeah buster thats my dilemna now. am i being hard headed? probably. maybe its about time i look into this and make a switch and stop being lazy, content. but about a month ago my vet asked me what i was feeding them, i said purina one, i asked if i should switch. they said no, purina one is good. my pups are in great shape and weight.

can you recommend a quality dog food that has glucosamine? sorry i should do my own research but figure you could save me some hassle. going thru the site you linked had a zillion different dog foods.
I take glucosamine myself actually. :D

You could look into a hollistic food targeted for senior dogs, I don't think it's a common additive.

I'd probably buy some supplements. Drs. Foster and Smith is a great place to get dog vitamins and healthy treats.

There's also nothing wrong with (so I've read) feeding your dog a raw diet. (Raw/lightly seared meat). I've read about it in lots of holistic dog magazines.

Does anyone do/have any information on that?

Maybe you just have a smelly dog. Lol, what type of dog is it? I know some dogs are prone to farting more than others.

Yeah, my uncle's dogs probably ate 10,000 chicken bones in their lives, and never did a problem result from it. They were lab mutts.

He's a boxer, and yeah they are notorious for farting. I've had several in my life, and they all farted -- smelly farts that are loud and make you think a person did it.

I always get a kick out of it, because farts are not funny to dogs, but they are hilarious to me -- so, my dog will make a loud smelly fart, and his expression doesn't change a bit. It's almost like he doesn't notice it happened. So funny to me.

OK I completely forgot I started this thread but damn you people took right to it. Lots of different foods out there that you guys use. Have you guys ever heard of Natural Balance? The only chain that it is sold in is Petco and its also sold in some of the mom and pop independent stores. Its one of the most natural and healthiest foods out there. Its right up there with Blue Buffalo and Wellness and is usually cheaper. Feel free to check out the ingredients. I also started this thread to see what I could do to make any of you switch to Natural Balance as I recently started working for them a few months back. We do tons of events on weekends where we hand out free samples, Ive recently done a NY Mets game and the Apple Blossom Festival in Winchester. If your in the Baltimore area feel free to stop by our tent at the Dogfest in Timonium MD on the 19th and Ill gladly give you some samples. Hit me up if I can help you make the switch!

Try getting something called Acidophilus and adding it to the food if you can't find a food that cuts it down.

Thanks. He might be albino, but I don't think so because he has some pigment (spots, nose, etc). He's also recognized by the AKC, and as far as I know they don't recognize albinos. I actually think he has some pit bull in his heritage, although again the AKC only recognizes pure breeds afaik, but some impure ones probably get through.

Any of the dogs with smashed faces/noses do.

Bostons, Boxers, Pugs, Bulldogs...

It comes from how they breathe and take in oxygen while they're eating. Weird, but I'm serious.

When I lived in Gainesville, one of my workout buddies was a teaching vet at UF's school of veterinary medicine. He had three dogs and a cat and fed them all Iam's. Good enough for me. I have been feeding our cat Iam's for all 6+ years of her life, and she's just as healthy as she was when she was a kitten. Knock on wood, she hasn't had a single health issue and she's just about middle aged now. Truth be told, I'd much prefer a dog over a cat, but my wife loves cats, and I don't have the time or patience for dogs right now.

Exactly right. I have both a Boxer and an English Bulldog. They both have the issue, but the boxer is by far the worst of the two.

Yes used it and the dog liked it. But it's about $40 for the big bag. Plus it's not found in Giant or Shoppers or Food Lion/Bloom. So if you run out and forget you can't pick it up easily if Petco is closed.
