A moderate contract from what we gave AH, but pretty hefty just the same. This guy will be our new Chris Samuels though.

Re: Trent Williams has signed and is practicing today

And he is in the perfect situation to be successful -- he has an all-pro, all-class guy in Chris Samuels who can not only teach him about playing the LT position in the NFL and the NFC East as well but also what it means to be a professional and a Redskin.

He has another high draft pick who came in from a successful Big 12 school (Orakpo) who can challenge him everyday in practice.

And, perhaps most importantly, he has a tough, successful coach who has a history of creating great offensive lines in Mike Shanahan.

Given these factors, he's been put in a really conducive situation to become a rock on our left side for the next 7-10 years.
lets see 21Mill in april = no show mandatory camp. Let's just let him work and get paid, no need to give a 22 year old 37Mill his first day at work. The salary cap will work itself out...
no need to get all the guaranteed money out of the way in an uncapped year so his cap hit would be roughly $6M less each following year? it just doesn't make sense to me - he's going to get his money either way.

btw, this is just me assuming that it was possible to get all his guaranteed money onto this years book. i have no idea if that was possible. can anyone comfirm?

Re: Trent Williams has signed and is practicing today

Trent has left the impression of a very personable and humble young man, easy to like, with both a love and respect for the game that should take him far.

I hope he remains committed and injury free, with a long career as a Redskin that will rival that of his predecessor. Glad the deal got done quickly and he didn't have to miss significant time. Hope to see him in B&G for years to come. httr

I think Trent looks very fat.

so what would be one good reason to not put it all onto this uncapped year's book?

one again, i am assuming that it was possible to do so.

Don't know the specifics but there are rules in place that prevent teams from doing that. Otherwise every team with strong cash flow would be doing it.

Look how AH reacted when we gave him alot of $$$$ up front, now you want to give a Rookie 30+ Mill up front, I beleive TW has a better character than AH, but do we really I mean really want to find out.

HTTR.

Huh..?

Whats the choice? This is the current system. He's a 4th round pick in the 1st round. There is a pecking order. That is the deal, plain and simple.

If I had a choice, I'll take it on a bookend LT for 6 years.

NYC I understand exactly what you mean. I would not write a guy a 30million $ check whose only knock was possibly his work ethic.

Re: Trent Williams has signed and is practicing today

And guys I understamd we had to pay the kid, but what NYC is saying is not front loading the contract to a kid or any other player to avoid another AH situation.

Re: Trent Williams has signed and is practicing today
The 30% rule. And the Rookie Cap.
Article XXIV, section 8(b)) states that:
"No NFL Player Contract entered into in a Capped Year and extending into the Final League Year or beyond may provide for an annual increase in Salary, excluding any amount attributable to a signing bonus ... of more than 30% of the Salary provided for in the Final Capped Year, per year, either in the Final League Year or in any subsequent League Year covered by the Player Contract."

it appears the 30% rule applies in capped years.

can anyone confirm if the rookie cap applies in this uncapped year? and if so, how the bonus vs salary works exactly?

you're buying a car, you want to put as much money down as possible so your monthly payments will lower.

we already "bought" williams, let's put as much money into this uncapped year as possible so his cap hit will be less in each of the next 5 years.

Re: Trent Williams has signed and is practicing today

A person isn't a car. A car doesn't skip a workout, because it doesn't like to drive on a highway. Let's look at Revis for a second, he signed a new contract last year, and I presume got some nice upfront cash. Now he is looking at a year where he is playing for only (gasp) 1 million dollars. There is no need to put tons of money up front into a 22 - 23 year olds pocket. He got good money, and the next few years he will get good money, and have incentives not to do dumb off field stunts and/or holdouts, lest he lose that money.

But your main point seems to be, we should do this because if a cap comes back his contract will hurt us. I think that's a bad reason to write a large upfront check. First, the FO has no exact idea of what a new cap would look like, the owners and players could negotiate a grandfather clause that accounts for any large salaries this year. Second, they may not get a cap, in which case you paid out a lot for no reason. Third, and this best answers your concern, we fit a 100million dollar contract under the last cap, when we were one of the top 5 cap strapped teams, If we had gone salary crazy, like Vinnie might have, then I would be worried, but 1 or two big contracts won't destroy any teams budget.

Finally, and this may or may not hold water with you, and I don't really care who gets the interest cuz it aint me, BUT from a cash perspective, that's a lot of capital investment to lose (heck even at 1% interest 20Million makes nice pocket change)

Allen is a cap master, I've got zero concerns about him in that regard. He's got that covered.

I don't think it has anything to do with motivation

30 percent rule still looms over uncapped year | ProFootballTalk.com
Can’t a team just front-load a contract to take advantage of the uncapped year?
No, this would be difficult to do. That is because, according to the CBA, any salary decrease of greater than 50% from one year to the next becomes signing bonus and thus is spread out over the life of the deal. For example, if the Patriots signed Vince Wilfork to a deal with a $20M salary in 2010 (uncapped) and a $4M salary in 2011 (capped), then that is a decrease of more than 50% ($10M), that $16M difference would become signing bonus and pro-rated over the life of the deal; if it was a four-year deal, then it would count as $4M/year, so the 2010 cap charge would reduce to $8M ($20M - $16M + $4M), and the 2011-2013 charges would increase by $4M.
The funny thing though about front loading contracts is that I can see guys like Revis making $20 or $30 million dollars in the first year and then a couple year down the road when they're making $3 or $4 million they'll start complaining about how much they're earning. "Man I"m like the best defensive player in the universe and this other guy is making $10 million this year. I wants a new contract. No I don't care if we have to cut a few of my teammates. Show me da money."

I think there are a lot of reasons not to front load, I know if my boss said I am going to give you 10x your base pay this year and a base pay for the next 5 years, as thankful as I would be I could also see myself at year 3 or 4 thinking, man I ought to get a raise this year.
