Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Let me try to explain this differently:
If the coaches truly believe that there are players on the practice squad who are better than players on the active squad, there is really not a lot of incentive for the coaches to keep the practice squad players where they are. Coaches live and die by the team's record. Coaches on teams that win 10-12 games every year rarely get fired; coaches on teams that lose 10-12 games every year usually get fired. Therefore, keeping "superior players" on the practice squad and keeping "inferior players" on the field works against the coaches' best interests. The players you pine for to be on the active roster will get there as soon as the coaches believe they are better players than the ones on the active roster. As of last Monday night, the coaches did not believe that to be the case.
So just what exactly is Galloway bringing to the table on the field? I couldn't care less what he's doing on the practice field and I'm not pining for some practice squad player to be activated, I'm just of the opinion that there has to be someone better, be it on the active roster or on the street/practice squad, than Galloway. Galloway has done nothing overtly that demands his being on the team let alone seeing the field. |

Him being a vet and more experienced? It can't be his route running, his hands, or his blocking, because he hasn't excelled in any of those aspects this season. |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
I'd like to see Austin called up as well, but it sounds as though Galloway has been demoted to the bottom of the WR depth chart from what I hear, Roydell has moved up to Galloway's spot and Banks will get significant snaps.
Wow I'm really excited now that Roydell is now moved ahead of Galloway. I guess he can't do any worse that Joey has. I would like to see Austin get sometime on the active roster to see if he is worth bringing back next season. We did use a late rd draft pick on him. |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
In Williams' defense; he's a bigger wr & he plays on kick coverage team. Don't think Austin would be good there due to his size.
Your right Austin is not very big but we need a 3rd WR that can make plays on offense with our teribble 3rd down conversion rate. Give me youth and and athelticsim over a vet that is washed up. |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
There is a rather basic reason why there are players on the practice squad and other players on the active roster.
It's not all that complex but just in case it seems mysterious let me lay it out here:
The coaches - - the ones who see these guys in practice every day and the ones that are responsible for putting the team in the best position to win on a week-to-week basis - - think the guys on the practice squad are not as good as the guys on the active roster.
Now, if it is true that there are three or four guys on the practice squad who really are better than the guys on the active roster, then you have to indict the coaching staff and the guys who do "pro player evaluations" for the team for "getting it wrong".
You mean like Anthony Armstrong was on PS last season now he is 2nd wr and deep threat. I guess Zorn did not know talent either. |

Nah, ARE, Devin, Kelly, and Marko were just taking up space. :D |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Joey Galloway should only run 2 routes, he's never been a complete WR.
It makes no sense for the coaches to have him running deep square ins or deep outs. He doesn't cut and plant sharply, he's not strong, he doesn't stop and start well. But, he still has above average straight line speed. If he's on the field i only want to see him run 2 routes: o go/fly/9 route-straight line sprint o deep post Before they start bringing people up from the practice squad they might want to make better use of the talent we have. Why not give Armstrong more targets? Why is Fred Davis an after thought? He imho deserves and proved that he can produce a bigger part of the passing game. You would think that after Moss and Cooley; Davis would be the No.3 option? Brandon Banks is shifty and has speed that should be able to find ways to get him the ball in space. I was watching NFL playbook yesterday and Solomon Wilcox said something that agree with (paraphrase): "Coaches should think of players not of plays when they create offense" |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Mathmatically we might be in the hunt still, but come on fellas, we still have to face the Gmen twice, and a possibly rejuvenated Boys team by the time we play them. The division is between the Gmen and Eagles. There won't be a third NFC East team in the playoffs. NFC North is still up for grabs also with GB and Chicago. GB and Chicago have better records than us and if that continues the second place finisher of that division could be the last wild card if NY or Philly stumble. You also have to factor in the South with NO and Atlanta. Shoot even young TB is going to be a factor. Too many teams ahead of us in terms of records/standings to even think we have a realistic shot at playoffs. We are playing horrible ball on both sides of the equation. Atlanta or NO will be a wildcard. NY or Philly could be a wildcard. Chicago or GB could be another. Too many good teams that we couldn't hope to beat out in a wildcard spot race.

Not having Andre Johnson is probably annoying him to no end. |

I hope it's true, I'm really excited to see what he can do. |

I hope so too. Sometimes it takes a situation like this to find the diamond in the rough. |

He won't play on Sunday, maybe next week |

I don't understand why they didn't put him on. It looked like he was a sure thing. It seems like it would have been the perfect time to give him a shot. Unrelated, something tells me Banks will not play 4 quarters this week. |

Do you think there is any chance we will see him (Banks) in a receiver type situation? |

That's what they're saying. We'll see

Interesting that Barnes is going to see a big role despite Buchanon and Westbrook having more experience. Apparently Haslett wants to "evaluate" him. Redskins Insider - Carlos Rogers, LaRon Landry will not play vs. Titans Giving Barnes an "evaluation," Austin getting called up, Banks seeing an expanded role... Looks like we're trying to see what kind of quality youth we have moving forward. I like it. I know there are 7 games left and all, but it's good to see the coaching staff being realistic and giving the young guys a shot. Playoffs ain't happening, lets see what we have for the future. Best case scenario, the youth influx is a shot in the arm and we make a push, worse case we at least know where we stand with some of our younger question marks. |
Re: Time to move up some practice squad players
Im glad that Austin gets pulled up from the PS but are they still keeping Galloway active? Galloway does not play special teams but Roydell does. As for Barnes he was a 3rd pick out of U of Maryland he has not made a impact yet dispite his 3rd selection. Is he another Vinny waste of pick , well its time to find out now rather than later. We have to decide on if we are going to bring back Carlos back after this season. I say we should keep him even though he has bad hands he still covers well and tackles decent. Lets see how we fair tomorrow in the secondary without Landry or Rogers.

Other then WR screens and 9 routes i doubt it. |

I agree with you, Logic says to get him the ball quick and let his feet go to work. I know he's short but they can send him deep if he can break. If their D plays him deep, they take that away but give up the short field, where he can be equally dangerous. It will be interesting, we may be able to use him as the Mike Vick of WR's. |
