I like the Al Carte idea and in my head i figured it be like 20-30 a game. does anyone really thing the NFL/DTV is going to offer games at $1 to $5 a game? IF so keep dreaming.
That to me is still a lot of money. I think when more options become available, we should hopefully see lower prices for access with increased competition.
If you can put away $10 a week during the offseason you'll have enough to cover the ticket. Just sayin'.

You mean like how the MLB and NHL packages both are much cheaper?

What if the NFL gave rights to Dish Network, Comcast, and Time Warner along with Directv? The NFL could keep the same revenue stream by splitting the price four ways. Then each of the providers could offer the package at lower prices because they paid much less each for the rights.

Monopoly economics keep the price artificially high.

MLB and NHL also have a ton more games and let's be honest, a lot less demand.

Supply and demand buddy. MLB/NHL tons of supply (games) low demand. NFL low supply (few games) super high demand. End result $335 a year to see it out of market.

I agree. But they also offer their service to a number of providers, not just one monopolistic provider.

Add competition, the price drops without hurting overall NFL revenues.

Not sure when the current DirecTV deal runs out, but they pay a ton of $$ for that exclusive deal.

That link says that the Directv deal ends after the 2014-15 season so there will be no change until at least then. Sadness.

Do you already have DirecTV now? If not the Ticket is included this year for new customers.

I get it, I personally could not afford it this year (3 year old and newborn + daycare) but that doesn't mean it should be cheaper because I can't afford it.

Yeah, although I'm not moving too far into NC. Just the Greensboro area. That is where my girlfriend lives and we plan on getting married next year. I do know they did show Redskins games on their local FOX station, but I think if the Panthers are playing at the same time, they show the Panthers instead.

As long as DirecTV is getting enough profit from their regular subscribers of the Sunday Ticket, then I agree, there is no need to lower the price. However, if that starts dropping off and/or their competitors get the opportunity to start caring it as well, then it's possible that the price could drop. Then again, that might put some strain on the local stations that carry the NFL.

I know about the free-for-switchers thing and I have been tempted. But I look at the Ticket as a long-term thing, not just a free-this-season thing. I figure that once I have the Ticket, it will be hard to go back. So the question is, maybe it's free this year, but what about next year and the year after? Can I afford it then?

And if I could muster the discipline to have it for only one year, I'd want it to be a year when we are really good so it is worth watching.

Plus Directv does not offer local channels in my area so I would have to pay for local channel cable service. This makes the price tag higher than free or $335 for me.

Bingo! I have already agreed to family outings and stuff during Skins games this year knowing this will probably be a down year. Plus with my son at his age now (3) it is kind of hard to want to do anything but spend time with him and he won't sit through a whole football game, especially in September when it is still nice out.

I hear ya. Once you have it, it's hard to imagine going without it.

Just to note with the local channels, you can pick them up with a good ol' over the air antenna, in HD too. They can install it at the same time when they put in the dish.

I live in the sticks. I can't get a good Fox signal OTA and CBS is dicey. Not the right channels to not get if you are an NFL fan. If I want Fox, I need cable or Dish Network.

This is ****ing bullshit you can only get it if you're not able to get direct tv. I don't want ****ing direct tv, but I do want sunday ticket, guess it's back to streaming on my own. haven't missed a game in 2 years. **** you direct tv!

Re: Sunday Ticket and PS3

in my opinion, the cost difference in the NFLs online package ($40) vs. directtv ($350) is substantial enough to motivate me to just go with the NFLs package. sure, its delayed, but its delayed less than 24 hours. From what i've read, a sunday game at 1pm or 4pm will be available online shortly after the SNF game ends... so in that case were talking about a delay of less than 12 hours. For most games, i'll watch the game on TV or be able to go to a sports bar. If im too busy to go to a sportsbar, i probably will have to watch the game delayed anyways. a few more hours of waiting wont kill me.

being mad at directv shows you have absolutely no idea what youre talking about.

you nave no reason to be mad at directv. if you want, be mad at the NFL for negotiating the sunday ticket package to begin with directv in the first place. or be mad at your preferred cable provider for not negotiating a deal with the NFL themselves and instead of allowing directv to have a monopoly on all the games.

all directv is doing is maximizing revenue. in my opinion, directv has gone above and beyond by making sunday ticket to non-subscribers in the first place.

If you want the Ticket you have to pay, just like DirecTV subscribers do.

Do you think they're supposed to lower the price for non-subscribers??

I don't agree I will gladly pay the $350 I just don't really wanna switch to direct tv, which I have to do if I want sunday ticket. And now I won't do either so they get nothing from me. Whereas if they would let me I would give them $350 to watch the Redskins on my PS3.

Uh that's the whole point of Directv putting the Ticket on the PS3, so non DTV subscribers can get the Ticket through their PS3. You don't have to sign up for DTV to get it on the PS3.

You're right you're right. I don't understand why you don't want to switch to Directv though. It's not that hard to get a good deal from them, as they are willing to give discounts almost all the time. And if you switch to DTV this year you'll get the Ticket for free. So if you want to sit here and complain about how you don't want to switch to DTV for some stupid reason but you still want the Sunday Ticket than be my guest.

Re: Sunday Ticket and PS3

This is awesome. I recently tried to get Direct TV - but they told me that all the uber tall pine trees that are prevalent where I live is not allowing me to get a clear signal. That poor installer was there for about 4 hours trying to get it to work.

So I sadly had to accept the harsh reality that I'll have to get my Redskins fix at the local sports bar (uber-expensive) or watch little tid-bits on the RedZone. The computer streams are to unreliable to truly enjoy the game. This is definitely a early Christmas present for me.

Lotus 09-08-2011 11:44 PM

Re: Sunday Ticket and PS3

Previously in this thread I argued against getting Sunday Ticket because of its short-term and long-term expense. I have since changed my mind. Perhaps my reasons (and my math) will be helpful to some folks.

1) by switching to Directv you get one year of Sunday Ticket for free. 2011 covered.

2) I was paying Dish Network about $80 a month. Because of introductory rates, I get a similar package from Directv for $40 a month for a year. $40 a month savings x 12 months =$480. Sunday Ticket is thus covered for the 2012 season with about $140 to spare.

3) Given previous savings, plus $10/month free HD savings by having autopay for 2 years, the third year of Sunday Ticket is covered.

So I get Sunday Ticket through 2013 for close to free (see notes) compared to what I was previously paying. In 2014 I'll just figure it out. In 2015 there should be a new deal which hopefully allows a similar package for cheaper.

Notes:
1) You can get the same free HD deal on Dish Network but I previously did not take advantage because I always felt that "next year" would be the year that I would switch.
2) Because I live in a hurricane zone where Directv requires a special roof install, and because I have a slate roof which will not allow a dish, I had to pay $85 extra for a special installation which Dish Network does not require. In the end I still get Sunday Ticket for 3 years for about $40. I can deal with that.
