I disagree with this. The guy hurt himself in a PRESEASON game and missed part of the season the second year after Gibbs came back.

I will grant he was a diva. I am glad he has moved on , but he deserves some love from the Redskins fan base. I always thought if he had a good line it could have been different. During his time all he had working for him was Sellers and Samuels.
He got hurt and that was the leverage he needed to basically never play in it again. He even got in a little spat with Zorn.

He deserves love for the 85-90% he did give to the Skins'. He deserves most of the crticism for the 10-15% of not-so-good baggage he brought.

In my opinion, in my 30 years of watching the Redskins Portis is one of the best to ever don the Redskins uniform. I don't get this whole knock on him for only giving 90%. That's more than most any teammate did probably, and more than any of us probably do at our own jobs.

Definitely one of the best Skins though

Re: Dolphins Work Out Clinton Portis...Decide Instead to Sign Larry Johnson

CP gave 110% on gameday, period. I have little doubt if we took the time to peruse old threads the vast majority of comments would reflect it. He was a warrior who sacrificed his body time and again, behind often sub-par lines and QBs.

That said I think we all agree Portis "rested" himself in practice. I don't fault the guy for it. He took an awful beating nearly every week (gameday) and one could make the argument "resting" during the week helped him give that 110% on gameday and possibly extended the life of his career.

It is certainly true CP would have to wholeheartedly rededicate himself to extend his career at this point. Whether he does so is a personal choice and I wish him well regardless.

What did he do for us, besides help lead us to the playoffs in '05 and '07? What has he done for us, besides play hard in games that mattered? What else did he do for us, besides pass block like his life depended on it? Nobody wants to talk about that, it's all about him being a little too honest on sports talk radio, or having photos of him clubbing it up on the internet, or talking about what a bad teammate/detriment to the team he was.

I agree in the sense that he was obviously worn down the last couple years, and we would've been better served bringing in a #2 that could split carries/be a true home threat in our Helu sense this year, but people act like he was a worthless fat prick that just ripped us off for 32 mil for 2 years of average play.

He was a contributor to those playoff teams, no doubt. But along with all those praises of the once-mighty Clinton Portis, people also forget the supremely great play calling in 2005 along with reliable and at times brilliant play by veteran QB Mark Brunell who sort of had his comeback season after such a poor year in 2004. In 2007, don't kid yourself if you think Portis saved the season. That was the Todd Collins show and I dont think you'll find many people that will disagree with that.

The bottom line is Portis' attitude and questionable work ethic is what is keeping him out of the NFL right now, not the fact that he is overweight. Any team knows for sure he would lose the weight once he signs and starts practicing/conditioning, but Portis has that whole "I don't practice" reputation that he nicley carved for himself.

If it weren't so, the Dolphins or the Patriots would have signed him. But they knew his attitude and reputation far outweighs any benefit from signing him. That's why Miami signed Larry Johnson, who kept himself in shape and is humble enough at this point to accept any role on a team. Humble, and Portis are two words that don't really mesh well together.

Co-sign. And he ran Riggins numbers without a decent o-line. I'd take a horse like that anyday, dumb costumes and all.

Ok folks this is just beyond sad. I think I honestly feel sorry for him now at the reading of this. Everybody in the league knows his career is over except him. It honestly must be truly sad to be experiencing that. His mind tells him he can still play even though he has let his body go and reportedly isn't showing anything at the two workouts he's had...

Get'm Solid, Get'm....that is kinda sad, but something i could hear Tortis saying. Is this suppose to make up for him being outta shape when he arrives.

who are the RBs now in Seattle? They've had some turnover there, I can't even remember who was RB in the playoffs for them last year.

Marshawn Lynch, I remember that crazy run he had. they also have Forsett & Leon Washington. Don't know about injuries to any of them. If they're healthy CP won't make it.

VegasSkinsFan 08-31-2011 07:03 PM

Portia will always be a true redskin to me. I hate that we gave up Champ for him but he was the only thing we had for a long time. Usually when a player leaves I won't wear the jersey anymore. I would with portis. I hope he sticks somewhere.

People act like Portis is coming out of retirement and trying to pull a Jordan. He'll get work somewhere. Either way, I'd much rather talk about the guys who are here.
Yeah he does. I don't get it at all.
He dressed in silly costumes, that means he wasn't committed.

He never played in preseason, even though there was that one year where he got injured tackling a defensive player returning a Mark Brunell interception in preseason. (2006)

He never gave it his all on the field, see the one or two plays where he slipped and fell on an open field as citations.

He called his starting quarterback gay, oh wait that was TO.

He never ran for more than 1000 yards in a season, except in 2004, 2005 (when he set the 'Skins rushing record for most rushing yards in a season), 2007, and 2008. 4 out of 6 seasons as a Redskin? Horrible.

Now I realize he had his faults, but for quite a while he was one of the 3 most talented offensive players on the Redskins, the others being Moss and Cooley.

Re: Dolphins Work Out Clinton Portis...Decide Instead to Sign Larry Johnson

I think all the ill-will about him is kind of seeping out right now because the very things about him that made him horrible here, and went overlooked by ownership and coaches, are the same things that are keeping him out of work right now.

No doubt in my mind he gave 90-100% on game days. However, he had a penchant for playing out of shape, falling down instead of taking a hit and maybe getting a 1st down, not practicing, all that stuff.

I mean he showed up for his tryout in NE 20 pounds overweight, after reportedly losing 25 pounds in two weeks. That tells you right there he was sitting around not anticipating on playing again. If the reports are true, then he let himself get to 260 or higher. Why would he let himself get so far gone if he had all that fire and all that to get back in the NFL? What kind of message is he sending a prospective team?

If someone signs him they will just get the same old crap out of him. I will eat my words if he signs somewhere and is in shape, and ends up being a team player and all that, practicing, etc...i just don't see him changing his stripes....

LJ did nothing during his stint with Cincinnati. Why the Dolphins think he would be able to produce in Miami is beyond me. The lifespan of RBs in the NFL is so short. One year they are on top, the next year they fall off. (Shaun Alexander, Tiki Barber, LJ, Portis, Rudi Johnson)

CP deserves to be treated with respect for sure, but by the same token, he has been 'done' for a long time. I was saying two years ago that he was finished - people laughed and snickered.

Portis, like other players, is fair game as far as being subjected to scrutiny. This is message board - it would be pretty dull if we were nice 24/7. CP will never play fb again.
