Over the long haul we are not going to get it done unless the running game improves dramatically. Counting on Rex or Beck to win the game through the air every week is a recipe for disappointment.
The defensive backfield needs to improve its communication and cohesion. Bowen needs to raise the intensity of his pass rush. Everyone on the offensive line had their moments of suck, as SmootSmack indicated. But T.Williams prefaced a sucky game today with a sucky preseason - it wasn't just one game. And we didn't draft him at #4 overall to make excuses regarding Pierre-Paul's abilities. Everyone on the o-line needs to raise their level of play but especially Trent.
I agree that the offensive line needs to play better than how they did in the second half, but the giants were bringing a lot of guys in both passing and rushing blitzes. I'm not trying to excuse their play because other teams will definitely try some of this too since it was somewhat successful. But I'm hoping that most this may be handled in gameplanning and adjustments in the upcoming weeks. As for the secondary, I think I'm not as down on them as others. I still think it's a huge improvement from last year. I think holding the giants, who have pretty much owned the redskins, to 14 points is pretty good. |
Today we finally looked like a team that will naturally get better as they get older. Sure we didn't look like a super bowl team, but we looked like pro's and played like a team that was all on the same page. Win or Lose, and we will have some bad losses I promise, it looks like there's Pro football back in DC. FINALLY! Dirty 30 is gonna reinvent the concussion when he gets back.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
When it comes to the running game, the team seemed to have all of it's success when we ran a 2-back set with Young leading the way whereas all of the oneback stretch plays almost always only gained a yard or two or even lost yardage.
The drops suck as did Gaffney not making a better effort to stay in bounds on that one catch that eventually got ruled out, but they also made some nice catches and ran great routes. Seeing Davis do what he did today makes me even more excited to see the team having both him and Cooley on the field together more and more as Cooley gets healthier. Overall a great team win especially the effort given in the second half and it was absolutely freakin awesome seeing a couple of the rookies making their presence known right out of the gate. |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
Great game, feels wonderful to beat the Giants (or anyone for that matter).
Here's the question. How long does it take for a left tackle to get up to speed? Here's what Ryan Clady did his first two years:
Clady finished third in voting behind Matt Ryan and Chris Johnson for the 2008 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.[9] He was the only offensive lineman to receive any votes. Clady started every game during the 2008 NFL season and gave up just a half of a sack while committing only three penalties.[10] After the Broncos' October 4, 2009 victory over the Dallas Cowboys, Clady set a new NFL record for consecutive games to start a career without giving up a full sack. Through 20 games, he has surrendered only one half of a sack.[13]
So my point is, it is just one game, and too early to say anything about TW. But he has looked overmatched repeatedly over the past year and preseason/week 1. We should give him the benefit of the doubt, but it concerns me. Starting to wonder whether we need to switch him and J.Brown, and/or draft a new LT. Again, I'll give him the entire year to settle into his role first... |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
Problem with Williams is, and this was the knock coming out of college, was that he was so good that he never had to work. That's not going to fly in the NFL -- his reports in camp were that he would get beaten and then he would step up and stop the guy. There is no sense of urgency, no desire to be the absolute best game in and game out which is kind of a concern.

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
Soooooooooooooooooo fantastic to beat the Giants opening day by 2 TDs!!!!!!!!!!!!! So fantastic...it helps alleviate some of the concerns mentioned...but they're still legit concerns.
- I hope Trent has an injury I/we don't know about. He looks worse than Heyer on a typical day. His footwork is terrible so he's constantly off balance. He seems to miss on a lot of (basic) reads. I don't know what to thing? The rest of the o-line is definitely struggling in both pass protection and run-blocking but as mentioned this is a new group that had little time to gel. I have faith it will get better, but Trent needs to get a lot better!! - Gano. - Secondary. Unless this group improves the better air attacks will eat us up!!! |
folks we BEAT NY, a team that has kicked our ass for a few years.. ENJOY it
The reason why some people cannot fully enjoy it, is because we should have beaten them a little bit more because they were so depleted on defense with their injuries, and their two best defensive players, Osi and Tuck, weren't playing, yet our OLine with a 2 time all pro on one side and a promising rookie on the other side were getting beat by the likes of Dave Tollefson and Pierre-Paul. Don't get me wrong, Tollefson's been around and Pierre Paul has potential to be a star, but the same goes for Trent against him, and Jammal Brown, with a good, bad, ok, great or whatever hip, should be doing a much better job on his side against Tollefson and the other Dlineman that beat up the right side of our OL. It was mostly the Oklahoma guys that were screwing up today. Now I'm going to agree with both sides here because your right, we should enjoy the 14 point win (could have been 17 w/ Gano but thats another rant), but at the same time we should point out our concerns because thats what makes our team better. |
The safety play was painful to watch. Atogwe did what he's pretty much done his whole career: he plays most of his game off the television feed. But that cover two out route that Manning got complete to Manningham under duress was far too easy of a throw. A good safety breaks up that pass pretty often.
Doughty was Doughty. Happy to have him, but if he's in the starting lineup, the offensive coordinator knows where to go on the field in the passing game. Getting Landry back will give the Redskins an impact player at the position, but he won't fix the weakness at the position.
Are you saying Atogwe is a weakness or just any combo of safeties in general? |
Are you saying Atogwe is a weakness or just any combo of safeties in general?
Atogwe isn't a weakness. He just has the same problem as our other safeties: that he's not adept in coverage. He usually isn't the one getting picked on by the opponent because he doesn't bite double moves like a double cheeseburger. But that alone does not make a player great in coverage.

He played both at OU. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
The drops were the worst thing for me Yes the OLine struggled in some of the blitz pickups but the Giants would have stopped bringing as much if the WR would have made them pay by holding on to the catch.
It hasn't been touched yet, but Paul's muffed punt was almost disastrous. If his assignment is to catch a short punt, he has to learn to faircatch when guys are that close or get out of the way. |

Samuels was much more of a technician than TW will probably ever be. TW just needs to keep working, it just might take him a little longer than Samuels to get there. |

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
This is the way I see things: no matter what the situation is, who's out, who's in, it's NFC East football. It seems like no matter how good we are, the Giants always seem to traditionally play pretty well against us even if it's just for a half. Let's keep in mind that it's going to take a few games for this offensive line to gel into one cohesive unit. I didn't like how much pressure Grossman faced, but he played pretty well and made the big plays when the 'skins needed them. I would also like to see Armstrong become a little more aggressive when catching the ball. There are going to be times throughout the season where he is going to have to wrestle the ball away from the defender - can't expect to just catch the passes that are non-contested.
Still, we beat the Giants and we have our first victory of the NFC East. Let's not downplay that fact. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
What the hell is up w/ Gano? Had a great pre season and comes out and misses a 39 yarder??? C'mon Gano. Plus you costed me 3 in fantasy!

Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
1. Oline protection was inconsistent, with bad beats on Silverback, Lichingwhatever, and Brown
2. Saftey play was horrible 3. Like to run the ball inside more with our guys, and think we could have. 4. Really bad drops by Armstrong and Gaffney...and the bonehead didnt get both feet down by Gaffney was a mental mistake. Overall not bad...the second half was probably the best effort by the team in awhile. Really proud of the play by Rex and the entire defense. |

ah ok, makes sense. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
Im not sure if this has been mentioned but i was kind of like what the hell happened when Paul and Banks had a little bit of a mis communcation after a Gaints punt.
We had the Giants pined deep and they had to punt it out of their endzone so the punter had to kick it as far as he could and didnt really have the option to kick it away from Banks or out of bounds. It would of been nice if Banks was able to run it back but him and Paul kind of both acted like they didnt know what to do. Its great seeing teams scared to kick it to Banks but they have to make the most of his chances when he has them. |

Also, the second "drop" by Armstrong was just a good defensive play by the Giants' DB. Still it would have been nice for him to make that grab. Sent from my Samsung Epic 4G. |

It was good call. i think he did not have both feet on the ground when he made the catch. He started picking up his foot and then put it out of bounds. Not a big fan of instant replay. I never can quite celebrate any play, without the fear that it could be called back. Not very fun and who benefits? No one. |

I don't see the need for much of Torain...I see him more as insurance in case Hightower goes down. I would like to see more Helu mixed in for a change of pace though. |
Re: Smoot Lays the Smack Down (Giants at Redskins)
I think the call was correct, I also think he should have made that catch. You have to make sure your feet are in bounds in that situation keep them locker where they are and fall out of bounds, it was from a standstill so its not going to get you hurt.
I am 100% positive on yesterdays game though, the oline not perfect but way better than last year, the D was awesome in my opinion and forget about the safety play, Doughty is a back up and will always play as such. Receivers dropped a few balls but that happened around the league yesterday! Love a week 1 win against a divisional foe! |

Yeah, its Gaffney responsibility to ensure he gets his feet down...he had time and I think he rushed it. But its moot because i believe the next play fred davis carved up the secondary with like a 25 yard gain. I expect next game Armstrong and Gaffney will clean up their play and be more effective. |
