Yes I do,what do you consider "not too bad"?Lets say the mayor ...Town counsel ...whomever... get voted out for some reason now the new people are in and want a new town pool or golf course....we'll just take from the firemen or Police oh yeah the education budget....what is to protect them from this,the fat govenor of NJ is already trying this so I ask you how do you protect these people.How do you make it attractive to the next CEO of Walmart or Apple etc .....the wages and pay must be competitive to keep good people.....same with Fire ,Police,Teachers and Nurses(EMS)
You said teachers with a masters get higher pay,first they must get hired and fall into a pay scale then they have to pay for the masters while also takeing certification courses that take up any free time you might have ...oh yeah they have to pay for them themselves and all this not knowing if they have a job becuase the fat governor just shut 15 more schools becuase of the state budget .

The paper reported what was told to them by a worker for the company or maybe someone they thought worked for the company. Their own web page has a link showing that the story is not true. Now its you not letting the facts get in your way.

The Nevada Policy Research Institute posted the annual survey on its website, TransparentNevada.com, and released a statement blaming the police officers' union for departmental budget problems.

"Even a casual glance ... shows that excessive salaries are behind Metro's budget difficulties," NPRI President Andy Matthews said. He said departmental-paid union leave time accounts for $1.8 million of the department's nearly $503 million budget.

Las Vegas Police Protective Association and Las Vegas police officials didn't immediately respond to messages.

The release of salary information comes with Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie, the elected head Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, asking the state Legislature to authorize a quarter-cent sales tax increase approved by voters in 2004 to hire more officers.

Gillespie has pointed to a drop in property tax revenues since the Great Recession and sought flexibility to address what he called a "structural deficit" in his department budget.

Clark County and cities have supported the call for the quarter-cent tax hike. State lawmakers have the final word.

Matthews said the Legislature should reject the tax hike and instead ban policies allowing for paid union leave time.

"Giving them flexibility won't result in more officers on the street," he said in an interview. He said the money would instead go toward "already bloated salaries."

An NPRI statement said Las Vegas police in 2012 were some of the highest compensated employees in southern Nevada, with 149 people taking home more than $200,000 in total compensation. One lieutenant received $354,000, an assistant sheriff received more than $294,000 and one captain received more than $585,000 in total earnings, according to the survey.

"These inflated salaries are the result of collective bargaining laws that favor politically powerful labor unions over the needs of taxpayers," Matthews said. He called the salaries "unsustainable."

Las Vegas police ended 2012 with 4,940 employees, including 2,549 sworn police officers, 764 corrections officers and 1,627 civilian workers. The number of police officers peaked earlier at almost 2,750, according to departmental figures.

The regional police agency covers a sprawling area almost the size of New Jersey that is home to 2 million residents and draws nearly 40 million visitors a year.

There will be more and more of these stories as states have to start finding things to cut. It hasn't been an issue when times are good and flys under the radar. The mayors of Las Vegas have been Dems who are in bed with the unions. I personally don't blame the cops for getting what they can.

It should be an overwhelming no. The people and state of Nevada should be outraged. People need to start looking in their own communities and they will find similar stories about the ridiculous ways their tax money is spent.

Those numbers seem way too high. The 'total compensation' part is what bothers me. What is included in total compensation? Could it be $$ doled out in medical care? Expensive, but mandated, training? I don't imagine a police officer making upper 200K a year in salary.

I believe a significant chunk of "total compensation" is overtime. I am sure there are other factors, but cops can (and do) rack up a lot of excess hours at time and half or higher.

My understaning of total compinsation would be pay plus benefits. Training would not be considered compensation.

Yeah your probably right. Over time is a f8cking racket in the police departments.




Anybody remember The Wire second season where the old timers would sit around and play cards while on duty and when they got switched to the new area they did the same thing and when asked any concerns the one guy said laughing "who approves the over time?" Its a joke to them because their robbing mutherf*cker their suppose to be protecting and serving.
