4 all the critics of the PS, it's refreshing to not feel like we are scraping the bottom of the barrel to make our PS. Allen and Shanahan have us on the right path for the first time in 20 years!!

Might even beat the Jets . Grossman would start for them and he's our 3rd string qb !

Who is criticising the practice squad? It seems to me that everyone has roundly praised it.

I heard he has a young brother named Les who is also an o lineman. Maybe we should give him a try out.
This is a great roster, PS and suspended players. Some tough choices will need to be made, sometimes injuries make those choices easier.
The thing is these choices the staff are making are complicated by suspension, injuries, etc. but Shanny and Bruce have a plan. The roster is in good shape just need to put it together on the field.

Re: Practice Squad

So I like to look at things from a distance because it helps promote perspective and context. And one thing that's really apparent to me is that the roster looks a heck of a lot better than it did at this time last year. The Redskins have improved a lot in the last 365 days.

They've also done a lot more winning than they've done in the recent past, but for the early part of the Shanahan era, we were very talent deficient. The first two drafts haven't produced a ton of depth. Although the last two...have produced a lot of depth. And now, we're a deep-ish team. Maybe not the deepest in the NFL, but as deep as anyone in the NFC East.

That's always been the standard by which you measure yourselves, and now I think it's safe to start comparing the Redskins to other top teams in the conference. We're keeping different company these days (our roster doesn't look out of place next to Green Bay's roster or New York's roster, to give two examples), and that feels good.

I must say, I find your endorsements of the Redskins and the Shanahan's to be completely disturbing, causing a ripple in my B&G Cosmos.
Most puzzling.....

Perhaps to the rest of us. For Tripp, it was more of a cathartic cleansing exercise.

Care to join Hog1 and I for a glass of kool-aid Gtripp?

I agree completely, I'm very excited about this year and really the next 10 years if RG3 stays healthy.

BUT - ironically, the roster is almost the SAME as last year, as in - 22 of 23 starters from last year. Just our outlook has changed after their impressive run. But your point is well taken, our depth / rookies look much better in Amerson, Rambo, B.Jenkins, C.Thompson, etc and I'm ready for the season to start..

I was pretty shocked that we didn't take anyone from any other rosters. And it didn't even seem like we wanted to.

Jamison I think is the guy to really watch out for out of the group. I've long been a Nick Williams fan, but I don't think his ceiling is super high

JammerJabber on the San Diego Chargers forum said the same thing 10 years ago about an unkown little WR from Texas Tech named Wes Welker...

Not the same. Welker put up serious numbers at Texas Tech. He may have been little know to the average fan, but not to most scouts. Williams didn't produce at that level in college

I don't think much. He was hired more so to to advise on the team's current players

True, but he was undrafted and went to 2 different teams before he became known to all fans.

It sure helped Welker to have Brady throwing the ball to him.

Yep, and thats why Nick Williams has RG3. Also to note, Welker had Drew Brees/Rivers to show his potential (which he didn't have until later in his career)..much like Nick Williams will..

I'd love to see Nick Williams enjoy the kind of career Welker has. And I've watched Williams for a few years and am definitely a fan. But I think it's an unfair expectation at this point. He's a "Wes Welker" like player. But I don't expect Welker like results

Are the skins paying players like Minnifield extra (like Compton last year) to prevent him from being poached easily by other teams?

Skye Dawson went to the Bucs practice squad, FYI

FRPLG 09-04-2013 08:53 AM

Re: Practice Squad

Dawson was a real disappointment. Didn't show much. Maybe he'll develop but someone with that speed should at least flash some.

JoeRedskin 09-04-2013 09:59 AM

Re: Practice Squad

^^ Yup as to the need to flash given his speed. On the other hand, I wouldn't classify an undrafted rookied free agent "a real disappointment" for failing to show he is NFL quality.

Given the amount of coverage, investigation and analysis leading up to drafts, it seems to me that the expectation for the overwhelming majority of rookie UFA's is that they aren't NFL quality - regardless of their measureables skills. On the other hand, rookie UFA's that excel, flash or show themselves deserving of being on an NFL level are an unexpected boon.

I wonder what the ration for RUFA's making a PS or roster is. I would suppose it is much lower now than it was probably 15 years ago. (On the other hand, when 28 teams were holding 12 round drafts, a RUFA making the team was really something special - I'm looking at you Joe Jacoby).

For the first time I could see multiple guys on this squad being capable of contributing to the team if needed. Love this PS roster.

Even with Miami when he wasn't being used (much) on offense, he was one of the top returners in the NFL. I actually owned him on fantasy teams that had return yardage and he was more valuable than most WRs. :D

No one else knew who he was then.

Back to our PS...I don't recall ever seeing so much potential in a PS before. Thrilled with who made it.

We had more competition in camp this year than I can ever remember. We had to cut some quality players.

Hopefully someone from the PS gets moved up and get some quality PT. Sucks that Thompson got injured though.

So you'd rather keep a 7th WR than a 3rd RB?

D.BUTZ65 11-13-2013 02:54 PM

Re: Practice Squad

Im hoping N. Williams can add some excitement in the return game. He was a pretty good returner in college. I know his shot of getting any offensive snaps are slim but it would be nice to see him get one or two.

Give me the Royster contribution this year? Kid from Rutgers has more value than Royster. He has zero business being on the roster.
