Yeah, when I heard TV was a strong possibility, I didn't quite see how that made sense either. Luckily, someone finally realized how awful that would be.
Is there any chance the NFL goes back on this and actually hits Rice harder? So far I've seen articles about this suspension on ESPN, Yahoo, & Bleacher Report and all of them agree that this is a joke.
It really is. If I was to play devils advocate I would say that comparing drug test failures to domestic violence isn't fair because drugs can be tested for where you could argue domestic violence is harder to prove and a lot of times can amounts to he said, she said.

Of course then you think about the ridiculous number of arbitrary suspension and fines for lesser offenses that weren't caught on tape and all you're really left with is staring down at the ground while softly saying 'oh.'

Also for the record I'm tired in the comment section of every other athlete domestic violence story where there's a handful of guys that immediately jump on the 'oh she wants money and is faking it' bandwagon.

I'm all for waiting until the facts come out especially since being a woman beater, at least in theory, should be only slightly better than carrying the labels of rapist and pedestrian. However this whole 'accusing every woman that accuses athletes of domestic violence is looking for a pay day' crowd is really getting on my nerves.

The only part of his situation that was no-win was the bogus salary cap penalty, other than that, he had basically free reign. If that is a no win situation then he should not coach again.

Some guys aren't cut out for media gigs and typically it shows through pretty clearly in how they handle the media as coaches.

Shanahan is just a bore and has never shown much TV personality. He's easily agitated and goes on the defensive more often than not. Personally I can't see him becoming a successful TV type.

No he's not. Around the league everyone knows this was his show. And they all watched him run BS cover for his son, who I like a lot as a coordinator btw, because Kyle couldn't make the situation worth here with 2 QBs. The shade Shanny threw behind the scenes was shameful. Doubt he ever gets a look again.
Not according to the NFL network .
He couldn't win here even though he had full control over the team. Like CRedskins said, if that constitutes a no-win situation for him, he obviously shouldn't be hired again.

Anyway, he failed and was fired here, he failed and was fired in Oakland, and his Broncos team was floundering when he was fired there... I doubt he'll get another job.
Not according to the NFL network .
Lol. NFL Network is a joke.

Most opposing team fans I knew were very skeptical of the Shamahan hire when it happened, because of his mediocre last few seasons in Denver. Being a pretty big Homer, I defended him as well as Haslett... But it seems as if they were right. And they may be right about Haz; he's got one more season to turn it around. An improved offense will help out the D, but there were some fundamental problems last year. Tackling, for example, was atrocious.

He just doesn't have what it takes as a talent evaluator; outside of Dumervil and Clady, he didn't really hit on any draft picks in his last 4 or 5 drafts (edit: in Denver). Awful.

Watching some of the coaches shows he did, I think they could give him game tape and a clicker, and he could be interesting in a 5 minute segment showing how schemes were applied, and how it developed. That said, he always looked uncomfortable on that show, and I doubt he is chomping at the bit to be in the media.

Re: Around the League...Training Camp Style!

This is when my fellow redskins fans crack me up... getting all worked up over Shanahan's quotes. Invariably the same people that were saying Griffin, Haslet, et al have not been taking shots at Shanahan and his son since they left.

I'm surprised it took Shanahan so long to take a shot and I'm surprised it was as subdued as it was.

And NFL network isn't really anyone that matters. But if you know people around the league then you know the story GM's and Owners have about Shanahan's tenure here is not the same as fans/media.

Anyone who's worked for the redskins (or any team for that matter) or been close with anyone who has knows there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes that the average fan never finds out about. A variety of reasons contribute to that, one being that you have to be behind the scenes to start with, the other being that people in the media (local media mainly) are not interested in losing their job, or compromising the job of their source, just for the sake of 'getting the truth out there.'

A lot went on behind the scenes at the end of 2012 and throughout the 2013 season. To sit back and blame Shanahan for all of it is lol. And if you think the GM's and owners in this league are restricted to narrative the majority of fans are... then lol again.

HoustonSkinsFan 07-28-2014 10:02 AM

Re: Around the League...Training Camp Style!

I don't necessarily agree that Griffin has been consistently taking shots. He took some shots after Shanahan was fired, I don't think anyone will deny that. But some people think everything that comes out of Griffin's mouth is a shot at Shammy, and that's just not the case.

I'd argue that Shanny's shots were far worse, because they were petulant and retaliatory in nature. He had the perfect chance to be the bigger man, and he failed miserably. Fits perfectly with the Ivory tower, spiteful, vindictive image that's been painted of Shan in the past.

Ruhskins 07-28-2014 10:12 AM

Re: Around the League...Training Camp Style!

I think Shanahan's PR drive to absolve him from any blame at the end of last season should be enough to keep him from coaching any other team. Any smart owner should realize that this wasn't the old Redskins situation and that he was fully in charge of everything, yet did not get it done.

Agreed. He successfully benched Griffin for the final however many games, so saying Griffin has all control is patently false. Shanny was taking shots at the end of the year last year, especially when it became clear he probably would not return.

There are a lot of owners/GMs whatever that don't know what went on inside Redskins Park. Just like Snyder/Allen don't know all that goes on everywhere else.

But at the end of the day, why are we still talking about him?

I almost feel bad for people when they have to defend a terrible position in the media. I wonder if Adolpho Birch was forced to defend the suspension as part of his job or if he actually believed it was the right thing to do on top of actively playing a role in Rice being limited to two games.

Regardless these are the type of things that people have an easy time justifying in back rooms but when they're brought out into the spotlight they're essentially F'd.

Let me be clear, based on lectures from my stoner friends back during my college days it downright difficult to fail a drug test with second hand smoke. The internets backs up my stoner friends.
Will Second Hand Smoke Show up in Drug Test?

It is very unlikely that second hand smoke will make you fail a drug test. However, it can leave traces of the active chemical in the marijuana, tetrahydracannabinol, or THC for short. This amount of THC is not likely to alert most drug tests. In addition, most drug tests are highly sophisticated, and can avoid those false positives that might come from second hand smoke inhalation.
With that said, given the fact that people are currently up in arms over the NFL being tougher on recreational drug use then they are on domestic violence I say go in for the kill.
