Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
Better to pay him to be a backup than to pay him to sit at home. Sucks if thats the best case scenario. Don't know who the hell this team could draft or afford by then so anyway., so looks like we're fucked.
Maybe there's a Doug Flutie guy in the CFL or something.
AS is getting paid either way . The call will be his and his wife's to make if he ever plays again. |
Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
Plan A for the QB position needs to be about moving forward without the services of Alex Smith. I would have no qualms about trading for Carson Wentz. Wentz has all the tools needed to make a big comeback.
If Alex Smith were my son I wouldn't want him to play NFL football again. It is just too risky. I just hope he recovers enough to be able to walk. |

The Eagles already said he's the guy and thank you to Nick Foles. We are drafting a rookie to start most likely, unless AZ takes Murray and we trade for Rosen. |
Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
Smith ain't even gonna be the backup this year. He's probably looking at PUP list at a minimum, and even then they might not activate him after week 6. We should just assume he's done at this point in the game given his age and the type of injury it is.
I guess its still early on in the "recovery" phase, but from all reports things are leaning in that direction. I'm going to start researching the CFL for the Doug Flutie guy. EDIT: Mike Reilly: https://www.cfl.ca/players/mike-reilly/131087/ Bo Levi Mitchell: https://www.cfl.ca/players/bo-levi-mitchell/158222/ (love the double name) Trevor Harris: https://www.cfl.ca/players/trevor-harris/156305/ (this guy went to D2 Edinboro "Fighting Scots") Lots of options now. |
Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
Assuming Alex Smith is done they need two QBs. This is Colts last year.
Alex would be cut in 2020, cost $16 million. |

Vet and a rookie is ideal |
Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
Colt, Johnson, and a rookie

Wouldn't mind that either. |
Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
I would move on from Colt. He inability to stay healthy when called upon is a problem...cutting him would give us a little relief as well and Johnson would be cheaper. I think we go into the season with Colt...by far the least exiting option and tank job in full effect. Colt is the fucking reason why Gruden and Bruce have never gotten serious about drafting a young, developmental QB.
Rookie QB whether first round or 4th round. I wouldn't say we have to take a QB first round...this team isn't in a position to reach. I honestly believe they will be vets cut who will be available in the affordable range who can come in and compete. Not Flacco or Foles, way too much for both. I think Dalton, Tannehill, etc could fall into that category. |
Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
I definitely don't see Colt going anywhere. He knows the system inside and out and he costs all of $3.5M.

yeah probably right. its damn shame too, another injury prone "Jay Guy". just garbage team building |
Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
I don't mind moving on from Colt if we were to bring in a guy like Teddy B or Tyrod for a year.

Well, he's valuable to keep around to help a rookie learn things. Otherwise you're trying to coach up at least 2 new QB's. |

I even think a lower level veteran starter will be too expensive if you add Smith's salary to a veteran plus Colt you would be talking north of $30 mil and for that kind of money you need an elite QB, not Ryan Tannehill. I think even a bottom 5 starter QB in this market will command over $10 mil. |

Looking at AS contract details, I cannot realistically see the teams ability to sign another veteran quarterback. Smiths contract will count somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 million against the 2019 cap. Colt McCoy gets 3.5 million. If the organization goes after another veteran, that would equate to a significant chunk of the teams cap to the QB position. I am of the mind that Washington looks to the draft for a rookie QB where the salaries are much more 'cap friendly'. I have already seen a couple of mocks that say Washington drafts Kyler Murray at the 15 spot. Smith will not be making any career decisions soon. If he is on the roster as of March 17, 2019 his salary for 2020 is fully guaranteed. |

True, and bad vet free agents are getting $10+ million. Bite the bullet for a year, and draft a mid-round QB... maybe Rypien |

Probably my favorite mid round QB prospect. And I don't like a lot of QB this year...its actually pretty bad year for QB prospects. But hey, Bruce and Jay have forced us into this position again. |

Just imagine the Redskins getting a Tyrod Taylor type which would put them spending $40 mil on the QB position. Draft two rookies start either Colt or Johnson while the rookies are groomed. Tank the season and go 3-13, if one of the rookie QBs look good trade that high pick for multiple pics to fill the rest of the holes. Superbowl or bust in 2021. Oops I forgot Snyder and Allen will still be here, lots of draft picks will be worthless, so 7-9 in 2021. |

No difference then if he was released. A player that retires is much like a player that gets cut. The June 1 rules apply there as well. |
Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
Per Reports. Alex Smith is out for the entire 2019 season.

And? Why exactly should I care if check down Alex is out of the hospital?

Re: Alex Smith released from hospital
I do wonder if he will ever play again as a Redskin. He would be 36 years old in his "comeback year" assuming he gets physical clearance to play in 2020. By then, we may already have a draft pick QB / stop gap QB in place, so i wonder if he stays on the bench in 2020. Or can we somehow get him to renegotiate his contract so he would be easier to trade for something/anything so that we can move on from him.
He would probably still end up being a starter somewhere else in 2021 at 37 years old, assuming he is 100% healthy. |
