I really hope Rivera promotes Kyle Smith to GM, because if he doesn’t, Smith will get offers on other teams.

Kyle has helped turn this team around. In fact, if Dan Snyder hadn’t drafted Haskins at QB two years ago, maybe we’d have a QB heir apparent, instead of trading Haskins for a ham sandwich this offseason.

Despite our franchises awful record, we have produced some of the best talent at the lower levels of the coaching / GM organization - like McVay and Shannihan.

Don’t let Kyle Smith go!!! He has had the ability to get good, starting players in the trash level of the draft ( fifth round and below) and also in the Undrafted Free Agent (UFA). He is the legitimate talent scout we’ve been praying for on this team for decades - INSTEAD of Dan Snyder and his lackey “GM”.

Want to know why we are finally winning? Because of some of the draft picks Kyle has made in the last two years! We have two players that are carrying this offense, who Smith picked up in the THIRD ROUND!!!

According to Keim he has been the architect and has had the trust of others. More than half the team are his picks, he might be as good of better than Beathard. Can’t lose him.

No, but he brings up a good point - the fact that Ron brought in Stokes. That doesn't mean that Kyle won't be retained or promoted to GM, but NFL guys tend to surround themselves with other NFL guys they are comfortable with, and guys they know they can work with. It's going to boil down to working relationships and philosophies. I can't say it's a sure thing Kyle is coming back; and I can't say that it would be the wrong decision if he doesn't either. Agreed. Kyle Smith has personally taken a very mediocre drafting program for the WFT and made it very good. Up until 2018, Snyder, using his mouth pieces Allen and Cerrato to have a very strong influence on all personnel decisions. It has taken 20 years of many, many bad personnel decisions (because of Snyder) , to bring in an NFL savvy talent evaluator like Smith.

In the beginning of his tenure as the owner, Snyder tried to use FA to build the team. Contrary to the rest of the NFL, the Redskins traded away draft picks like they were candy, mostly in exchange for old, past-their-prime players, who were looking for one last BIG payday. The “FA first” strategy was a massive failure. It has only been in the last 5 years that the team brought in a real GM, like McCloughan. Then he was ousted by Bruce Allen once Scot started to be successful.

Until Rivera came here, Snyder always could inject his opinion through his “yes man” GM (Allen and Cerrato). Snyder’s last override of Head Coaches opinion came with the Haskins draft pick. That’s why no head coach could win here over two decades - even when Gibbs and Shanahan came to Washington. That’s why Rivera wouldn’t even talk to Snyder about the HC job until he had TOTAL CONTROL on personnel decisions and also getting rid of Bruce Allen.

I think Rivera wanted to see how Kyle Smith did this year as a potential GM AND ALSO to make sure that Smith wasn’t the latest version of the Dan Snyder lackey that he’s had before.

BL - Kyle Smith needs to be awArded the GM position at the end of this season. He’s earned it, the team is getting better because of his picks and otherwise, he will go to another team where he can be the GM!!

Really great job by jp...I think the most underrated part of team building is those draft picks 4-7 rounds, that’s where you really build the team recognizing quality players who provide good depth, contribute in packages, and who are coachable sponges who potentially can blossom into major contributors

If it happens, I’d expect ex-Lions GM Martin Mayhew (who shares an agent with Rivera) to be in the running, as well as former Panthers personnel men Ryan Cowden (Tennessee’s VP of player personnel) and Joe Schoen (Buffalo’s assistant GM).

After the draft in April, and after trading Trent Williams and Quinton Dunbar, Rivera said that making Smith the GM was actually team owner Dan Snyder's call.

"[Snyder] has the ultimate say in the organization if it comes down to things like this," Rivera said. "That's a little bit above me."

I'm lost does Ron not want to give Kyle credit or something? That's what it feels like. Anyway imagine if Kyle leaves to build up another team, and Ron takes a step back. If Kyle becomes more successful with another team (McVay etc) wonder if Snyder will blame Rivera for not retaining Smith. Then firing him in year four or whatever if the WFT go backwards.

I'm not sure I see any problem with that article with regard to Smith/Rivera. Sounds like Rivera is clearly giving Smith and the scouting department credit for finding good players, but that the Coaches also get a big say in whether or not the players will fit with the scheme, culture, etc. It's a team effort, and that is the way it should work. It's only been less than a year, and a crazy year at that, but I haven't seen anything suggesting that they don't work well together. I wouldn't get too excited about anything in that article.

I kinda agree with it, it sounds like Ron is saying this is a collaborative process that's bigger than just one man (which is how it should be).

Smith makes the list, Ron and his staff go over it and figure out who's the best fit and they work from there.

Only way I see Smith leaving is if he's beefing with Ron about who to go after. It could happen, sure, but we wouldn't know about it until Smith is out the door.

For now I choose to trust Ron and the path he leads us in.

I think Kyle leaves if Ron hires a new GM. Let's see if fans have faith in Ron if they step back next year, lose Kyle etc. It's Washington with Snyder, it's always something that screws up.

I hope Rivera doesn’t let Kyle Smith go. It is AMAZING the talent that Kyle has pulled out of the dregs of the draft and UDFA. Most teams are VERY HAPPY to get one or two special team’s guy(s) out of a year’s UDFA and draft picks below the fifth round. Smith is finding very good, STARTING players, some in their ROOKIE YEAR, from those same low spots. McLaurin was a third round pick and he’s a team superstar.

The Snyder era has seen the owner and his untalented GM’s (Allen & Cerrato) make one bone-headed personnel decision after another. The team has drafted players with their top picks and these guys didn’t even make it out of training camp THAT YEAR. The team traded away really high draft picks for FA they could have got for nothing.

We haven’t had such a outstanding judge of talent since Bobby Bethards of the Gibb’s era, over 30 years ago!! If Rivera doesn’t make Smith the GM, Kyle will be offered such a position for a lot of money by another team!! And he’s worth it! Make him the GM and watch this team grow!

I'm a big Kyle Smith fan too, he's the best FO talent evaluator we've had in a while.

But the reality is, if Rivera doesn't know him well enough yet or hasn't developed trust with him, it's a hard sell to keep him if GM gets addressed next year. Keim mentioned Smith doesn't have the history with Rivera that others have, and I think that's a big driving factor. It's not to say that trust can't be developed, but it sounds like Ron isn't ready to hand him the GM job yet. Keim also mentioned a scenario where Ron hires a GM (probably someone he knows intimately) and Smith stays on in his current role to keep learning. With the way the league is I wouldn't be surprised if Smith gets a GM offer from somebody else, and if that happens we need to be prepared to let him advance his career elsewhere.

Kyle grew up with a GM father and knows the in’s and out’s of being a GM. My point is I know there are many smart NFL people out there. In my opinion from what I’ve seen, Kyle is probably the smartest and one of the youngest talent evaluators, why give him away when you already have him. If Ron can’t see Kyle’s work, then I have a problem with Ron and this would be the only time that I wouldn’t mind little Danny stepping in. Kyle has a keen eye that I don’t see others have.

The lack of commitment to Smith when RR speaks of him with his close relationship and history with Gurney points to Gurney being hired over Smith.

I heard the podcast the other day. Kyle Smith has done in 3 years of drafting what Hurney has in 14 years, enough said. If Rivera wants to be stupid and lose Smith, let him. Anyone can see what Smith has done in a short amount of time.

One could say knowledge and experience are two different things. Also, from what I’ve heard about his dad’s tenure as GM...learning from him may not be a positive. 🤷*♂️ We’ll see. I’ve learned over the years not to stress over this stuff since we have no control over it.

What's really frustrating is how many really talented people who have been in the building and have gone on to find success with legitimate ownership.

I mean really. Where were we going with Gruden when LA hired Mcvay. The folks who have been on the inside, who have been privy to the best information to inform such a decision have always gotten it wrong.

There are respected reporters who have compared Smith's talent and approach to that of a prodigy, similar to Mcvay.

It would be a shame if he becomes the next name on the list.

Actually his dad did a decent job in Buffalo and SD, he was better than Hurney.

Also heard he was a grade A ass as well. We will see how it all plays out. Ron knows what he’s doing IMO. I know on other boards people seem to forget the Panthers were a mess and he took them to 15-1 and a Super Bowl.

He has a young, smart and up and coming talent evaluator as good as Beathard and you just don’t risk losing him like you did Sean McVay.
