Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
If Miami doesn't take Merling, he's ours at 34.

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
hmm, maybe the jets want the best safety tandem in the league and take philips ahead of the giants?

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Jets just traded up.
Why does Ed Werder only seem to cover the Boys? ESPN doesn't seem to have a Redskins, Giants, or Eagles beat reporter.
Werder is based in Dallas. There are beat reporters throughout the country, such as Sal Pal in Philly. As for why no Redskins, they tried many years ago with David Alridge but the Redskins were not very cooperative and it wasn't worth it. It would be great for example if they could be in the Redskins War Room but they need permissioin and the Redskins simply won't grant it. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Jets just traded with GB. I think they're either going to take a safety or a WR here.

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
by giving up our 1st round pick we essentially dropped 14 places but upgraded a lower 3rd to a good 2nd rounder and a 5th to a 4th rounder. hopefully merling will still be around, then it would be a fantastic deal

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
man, I thought jets might go with Henne.

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
Weren't we hoping to get Balmer somewhere in the 2nd round?

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
No WRs yet!

Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
I think the critical question regarding this trade is whether we missed out on an impact player at one of the positions we need (o-line, d-line, WR)? Safe to say we didn't miss much at WR because they're dropping so far this year around, but the other positions are a real concern. By definition, a 1st round pick should make an immediate impact while players chosen in later rounds often must be coached up to play at the professional level. We needed an immediate infusion of talented youth across the oline (save for Samuels) and across the dline (save for Carter).
IMO we won't know whether this trade made any sense until we see who starts this season (not just for us but on other teams w/ regard to players we could have had between 21st and 34th). If indeed we gave up an immediate impact player where we need one, meaning none of our draftees start while draftees chosen between 21st and 34th do start, the trade probably did not make sense. Hopefully Kiper's adoration of Ceratto's scouting ability really shows up in this trade and draft year. I feel like a nervous wreck. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
we moved down 14 spots, thats not THAT much, especially if we end up getting the same guy we were going to take at 21. so far no1 has been picked yet that i think we were interested in getting at 21. hopefully merling drops

I think most had him going in the 1st. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
@ The Goat: I haven't seen anyone go since we traded that pick that I think was an impact player at a position of need for us...

Merling at 34 would be excellent value. |
Re: The official 2008 draft discussion thread
DeSean Jackson, Phillip Merling, Brandon Flowers, Kenny Phillips, Limas Sweed... we're getting one of them. ;]
