Re: Cousins has arrived
He's young and should get better each year.
He did what he did with a young Oline and no running game this year. He's definitely got more risk than the Brady / Brees / Rodgers tier. He's probably not as good as the KC supporters think He's probably not as bad as the haters think He'll get paid, but agree $17-18 million is reasonable, and put in escalators, bonuses, whatever to make the sides meet. And each year the cap goes up so a longer deal that we can get out of if necessary may be better for us (IF he is a legit starter) BUT here's the question - why do any of us care? We have TONS of cap room, none of us should care if they overspend on him by 1-2 million. It's Snyder's money and if McC continues to draft well our team has lots of rookie contracts which are cheaper. |
Re: Cousins has arrived
Schneed, thanks for posting the QB salaries and commenting on where Kirk fits among them. I found it very informative.
As you pointed out, $17-18MM per season feels like the range where this deal gets done. He might get a little more but, as ethat pointed out, if he does it's not going to kill our salary cap number. I think Kirk is probably craving respect as an NFL QB. With that in mind, I think it might be meaningful to him if his contract exceeds, even if by only a little, the $16.5MM the Skins threw away on RGIII's contract this past season. That's just human nature. Whenever I think of an NFL QB who compares to Kirk, I think first of Alex Smith. IMO, Kirk is a more accurate passer than Smith but Smith is a better athlete and more experienced than Kirk. I think it's close between the two of them. Whenever I think of what Kirk can become as an NFL QB, I think of Andy Dalton. Perhaps it's just the association with Jay Gruden that causes me to think that way, but that's what I envision for Kirk. |
Re: Cousins has arrived
Smith is super conservative while Kirk likes to go downfield more when he has the time in the pocket. I like the Dalton comparison. Neither have the biggest arm but are good at getting the ball out on time, and can go downfield accurately when time allows.
It's not 'just Snyder's money', as I believe in managing the cap closely to give yourself a leg up on the competition. But you don't risk letting this negotiation get to a contentious stage over $500K in cap room. I agree, you just get it done. Also it was mentioned, but locking a guy in for longer term means the contract will age, and you benefit on the back end of the deal by having a guy whose contract isn't appreciating while the market soars for others. Of course, the risk is you commit for too long to a guy who could bust out, you never know. 4 years $70 million, with a mutual option for a 5th year at $20M. That's how I'm calling it. |
Re: Cousins has arrived
I'm going to just throw this up against the wall and see if it sticks.
Scenario: let's say negotiations don't go well with Cousins, his agent's demands are outrageous, so McCloughan slaps the franchise tag on him. Remember, players under the franchise tag can sign offer sheets elsewhere. The Redskins would then have the option to match the offer sheet or let him go and take two first round picks in return. Let's say he signs that offer sheet. Would you take the picks, or match the deal? Obviously your answer might be 'depends on how much the offer sheet is for'. Feel free to set a limit. I know what I would do but curious to hear. And for the record I don't think the negotiations ever get to this stage. But for shits and giggles, as they say.
Sign him at all costs. We have a full compliment of our own draft picks, and QB is waaaay too important to mess around with. Im not risking what we have going on here for a few million either way. |

Edit: remember when people were saying let me see two good games in a row, well he gave us several. |

This was his last year on the rookie contract... Just sayin. |

well said. Kirk has shown enough growth in just this past year to warrant the long term commitment. I have faith in the new stewardship running the organization...it will get done & will be fair for both sides. Then we can start focusing on adding the other cast members around him. |

^^ another really good film breakdown from wapo mark bullock. while he picks select samples, it shows cousins progressing as the season went on in terms of mechanics, not staring down receivers and calling audibles and complete plays from the LOS. these type of film breakdown articles are really good imo. a real nice new addition for the following fan. |
