He made some really nice catches, and I do love his toughness and attitude. And Gruden said he's "raw"... Well I can't wait to see what he'll do when he won't be raw anymore!
Simms reminds me of Anquan Boldin. Not the fastest receiver but big, physical, with great body control, and good hands (AB was 6' 1", Simms is listed 6' 5" - both at 220lb). If he improves on his route running and works on his technique to get separation, he has long career ahead of him. I don't ever think he will be a true deep receiver (his 40 time is in the 4.6 range), but he could become a fantastic No. 2.

Got this from reddit and have heard similar numbers before:

"A person who runs a 4.4, or a decent 40 time gets about 9.1 yards per second. A 4.6 person would run 8.7 yards per second."

So, a WR like Doctson, who runs with ~4.4, would have a full yard more separation than a receiver like Simms, who runs closer to 4.6, would have.

Obviously, pads, routes, defenders, turf, etc. all play a role in a player's game speed, and we have all seen that speed alone does not make a good WR. However, the physical difference that those .2's of a second represent are something that cannot be taught and, generally, are the difference between a WR being a true deep threat (which Doctson has the potential to be) and a very good, but limited, WR.

Mind you, I am not knocking Simms. I like him a LOT. It's just that, in addition to his "being raw," he has certain real physical limitations that may prevent him from ever becoming a true No. 1 WR. You can't teach speed.

You can't teach heart, either.

^^ Okay. However, I haven't seen anything from either Doctson or Simms that they lack in that department.

We've seen way too many WR training camp heroes over the years... Sims seems like a nice prospect don't get me wrong, but let's talk if/when he breaks into the starting lineup.

He will be starting by week 6. As many people have pointed out you can teach speed. You also can't teach size and he has a lot of size.

Some players who have size do not necessarily use it to their advantage...Sims def uses it. He shields against defenders, catches in traffic and goes up over defenders.

His size in the red zone is evident...too me he should be in the package immediately once we are within the twenty.

Barring injuries there’s zero chance Sims is starting by week 6

IF he even makes the team.

Doctson, Richardson, Crowder, Harris and Quinn have all got a better shot IMO, with the first 3 being locks.

He's definitely in contention for the 6th spot but lets see if he even makes the 53 or gameday 46.

I agree. I was way more excited for R. Davis this year than I am for Sims, but with him heading to IR that 6th spot looks like it would go to Sims. B. Quick has the experience, I just haven't seen/heard anything about him this camp.

No. No he won't.

Re: Training Camp 2018

I think Simms makes the 53 - there are enough teams out there with WR issues that would love all his really good qualities to grab him off waivers if we tried to stash him on the PS. My bet is that they go with youth over experience and cut Quick.

I suspect, however, that, barring injury, he would not dress for the game day 45.

This. I don't think Sims will get to play much this year although, I won't be surprised if Gruden has red zone plays specifically for him. I would expect to see more of him next year or so. It usually takes about 3 years for WR to develop, or at least that's what people say.
