Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
I will also make the trip to Canton if Monk gets in. I'm thinking the idiots might put him in this year to shut everyone up for awhile.

Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
Oh and also I want a Mel Kiper tshirt!
The HOF is a joke and that's sad. I just can't believe that players like Lynn Swann, the other steeler wr ---can't think of his name, are in the HOF w/ #'s that are not even in the same league as monk's.
Stallworth deserves to be there I believe...I am making the trip to canton when Monk gets enshrined...either that or next year when green gets in |

Yea, i'm not exactly sure about Stallworths #'s so i probably shouldn't have included him in there. I guess my point is that if WR's are in w/ significantly lower #'s than monk should be in too. |

Monk retired with more receptions than Swann and Stallworth COMBINED. The upside for them was winning 4 Super Bowls and making huge plays in those games. Monk will get in once asses like Peter King get off their high horses and stop speaking against him. |
Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
Receptions and rushing yards are just not comparable. Monk was a good receiver but not HoF material. I have a hard time getting my mind around the fact that CM is the #4 all-time leading rusher because I have a hard time seeing him as HoF worthy.
Receiving yards and rushing yards are comparable, and Monk retired top-5 in receiving yards in addition to #1 in receptions. Those two alone should have been plenty to get Monk in (not to mention his 3 rings). Had he spent his career in a pass-first West Coast Offense, there's no telling how much greater his stats would have been. |
Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
The HOF process seems to be like a school yard bully situation where the loudest spouters get their way and the silent majority just goes along with them...

Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
i read an article somewhere that most HoFs for sports blow. i think they were bitching about joe dumars being in the hall. i sort of agree. too many people get in it seems.
i guess it's not so bad for the NFL but still... |
Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
Monk gets the shaft on many levels. He played in a day where catching 100 balls in a season was unheard of... and he was the first to do it! With how pass happy the NFL has become, it's only made his accomplishments seem that much more insignificant which is sad.
It should be interesting to see what happens with Martin. I'm really not sure that he's a lock. There are a lot of people out there that differ on Martin and even Bettis. If I had a vote, I'd put Martin in. To me his numbers tell the story. #4 on the rushing list 14,101 yards 90 TDs 10 straight 1000 yard seasons 5 seasons of 1300 or better 4.0 avg 4 seasons of double digit TDs He was consistently one of the better backs in this league for a long time.
Winning the rushing title at age 32 is more impressive to me than John Elways back to back SBs at 36 and 37. Not to take anything away from Elway, but to, in an offense-happy season (2004), outrush every other running back in the league when not a soul thought you had another 1000 yard season left in you was incredible. |

I agree. Everyone was SO down on him that year (I guess b/c he only scored 2 TDs the previous year). He was virtually ignored in my fantasy draft, and I ended up getting him late and winning the title. Following him that year was unbelievable. All I can remember thinking was, "this is the week he crashes back down to Earth," -- but it never happened. |
Re: Mel Kiper on Monk
But Martin will benifit from playing more of his career in the internet/fantasy football/NFL Network era. More people probably know about martin and his accomplishments and that's why he's getting the pub now. Plus, he's just now retiring, so that helps.
Just a thought.
Someone fill me in, What did Martin ever accomplish? Getting to the Super Bowl? Winning a few divisions and a rushing title? Big Deal. Under that criteria if Alexander retired tomorrow he would be in. Hell, vote in Eddie George. Obviously, stats don't get you in. Compare Monk to Swann, Stallworth etc. Monk had great stats when he retired. Kiper is right. The voters are idiots and basically choose on a whim. |

That means there are only 3 other people to EVER rush for more yards than him -- that is a big deal, my friend. However, you're right: the hall doesn't care much for stats ... it's a popularity contest. |
