If Brunell sucks it doesn't say much for Mr. career backup Todd Collins. If either of these guys had to play a significant amount this year we're screwed. I think Brunell gets the nod though due to his experience level.
I guess your right. Collins has no game experience but I sure would like to see Collins get some time this pre season. I mean how do we know this guy can't play? Has anyone actually seen the guy play? He has stuck around the NFL for a while so he must have some talent. |

This is Collins what, 12th season in the NFL, and he has how many starts? This is guy is a career back up who has only hung around because of his system knowledge and ability to teach players. He is the quintisential "player coach." Brunell on the other hand is old and broken down, but the guy is a player, is well respected in the locker room, and has shown that if healthy, he is a great #2 QB. Let's not forget that Brunells problems are related to health. When his legs get balky, he is about as useful a third nipple, but when healthy, he can play at a high level as he has proven in fits and starts over the last couple years. With Bramlet showing legit potential, and Palmer coming in as a draft pick, Collins looks like the odd man out to me. If he's that important in teaching the system, hire him as a QB coach or "offensive consultant," but don't waste a roster spot on him. Quite frankly, if we are down to our #3 QB, it means our season is probably shot and we'd be better off testing out young talent for future value than trying to eek out wins with sub-par talent. |

i'd like to see bramblett, the world bowl mvp get the backup job.he can't help but learn from brunnel and campbell.collins needs to go elsewhere, but he has been content to ride the bench 12 years.he may become complacent running the scout teams,or the away offenses week to week! |
Re: World Bowl
I think Bramlet has the inside track on the #3 quarterback spot. There is no substitute for actual game experience. Palmer is a great prospect as well. It will be hard to stash him away on the practice squad. I have a feeling another team will snatch him up if he is placed on the practice squad.

Re: World Bowl
I don't like Brunnel or Collins. If it was up to me I would cut both and keep Campbell, Bramlet and Palmer. That's a gamble, not having an experienced backup, but Brunnel and Collins are washed up. Go with the youth movement.

That's not a gamble, that's called season suicide if Campbell goes down. |
Re: World Bowl
I thought it was pretty well decided that Brunnell and Collins are competing for the back-up spot. Whoever doesn't make it as number 2, doesn't make the team. The third spot is reserved for the developmental guy. So essentially, it's Collins v. Brunnell and a three way competition (Hollenbach, Palmer and Bramlett) for the number three spot.
As for the back up slot: If I were Collins, I'd start making some calls. No way he beats out Brunnell. Brunnell is a JG favorite, popular in the locker room and just restructured his k so to help out the Skins. Unless he can no longer get the ball past the line of scrimmage, MB is here one more year. As for the third spot, I think Bramlett has some advantages over Hollenbach and Palmer. First, he's got game experience - Yes, it's NFLE but Palmer and Hollenbach got nothing and aint getting many reps. He's also got one more year of familiarity with Saunders offense. Because of this and if the 3rd QB is forced to play at any point this year, I think Bramlett gives us the best chance for winning. Not saying he is going to light anything up, just that, based on his experience, he may be less likely to commit some of the dumb mistakes a rookie might make. Also, with Bramlett on the roster, both Hollenbach and Palmer can be placed on the practice squad. Even if Bramlett were eligible to be on the practice squad, my guess is that, at the first qb injury, he would be signed as someone else's third QB. I think it shakes out this way - JC, Brunell and Bramlett on the roster. Palmer and/or Hollenbach on the practice sqad. Then next year, Brunnell cut, Bramlett is the number two and Palmer, Hollenbach or next year's 7th round or OFA QB as the third. Lots of good QB's have come out of NFLE in the past 10 years. My guess is that Bramlett is a more than servicable back-up for the NFL. Who knows? Maybe he'll develop and get enough preseason playing time to create enough interest from other teams that we can Matt Shaub him in a year or two. |
Re: World Bowl
Here is how I see it. And I'm not trying to turn this into a Brunell thread. But can someone tell me why we are keeping a 37 year old QB coming off major shoulder surgery to his throwing arm? Even when he is healthy, which isn't very often, he can't move the chains. Yes, he has experience, but throwing a 5 yard pass on 3-8 does nothing for me. Brunell can't run Al's offense. Does anyone on this board think that Collins can't do any worse than Brunell did? I'm just speculating. I don't know, maybe Brunell is better suited for the back-up role and can be effective if he only has to play for a week or two. But if I have to watch 9 Eagles lurking around the line of scrimmage and we can't beat that deep I'm going to puke.
If you look around the NFL most teams keep a young guy and a vet. No one keeps two old guys around in their mid to late 30's. So I believe this rumor 100%. So if it were me, I would have Collins be the #2 and then let Bramlett and Palmer battle it out for #3. We have got to get a young guy in here to groom along with JC.
What I've heard is that Brunell is just a better mentor for young QBs than Collins. He's more patient, engaging, and supportive. And, this is kind of interesting, I've also heard that Brunell is more adept at understanding the complexities of offenses other than Saunders' and that makes him more effective as a scout team QB. |

I would also like to add that neither is exactly a spring chicken, and I would rather have a backup that had an effective career, than one who played back up the whole time. |
