Yeah I agree with it, primarily because I still think Jansen is a stud. People are quick to rag on him, but I don't see the logic.
I would not caategorize Jansen as a stud anymore. His skills and technique have been on the decline for the last 3 years. He may be a better fit at Guard.
Looks like he's agreed to the vet min :)

Seriously though, according to this he's restructured his 2008 salary down from around $5 million to $730,000

Haven't really had a chance to look at the overall cap ramifications. I'll leave that to the brainiacs
Outstanding! I was thinking we would have to cut him due to his high salary. I am quite pleased he chose to restructure. Just another reason we should keep this guy around. When healthy he's a top tackle.

Love this time of year.

I'll do another cap sheet update tonight as well as the long awaited Cap 101 thread.

Thanks again to Schneed for all his work.

So if we're 6 million under the cap, is that enough to go after Briggs and say Williams and some needed depth?

Re: Jon Jansen Restructures

I just did an update.

- Jansen's restucture was a basic salary ($4.25M) to signing bonus move. It saved us $3.2M on the 2008 cap as Schneed predicted.

- Cooley's numbers didn't change on my sheet with his "restructure". The $11M roster bonus never made any sense, I'm quite sure it was guaranteed all along.

- The Red Snapper signed for the vet min. He'll make $830K salary plus a $40K signing bonus. Because of the vet min exemption he will count $485K against our 2008 cap.

Right now I have us at $5.8M over the cap, but Brunell's imminent release will save us $3.5M, bringing us to $2.3M over. I still have Rock on my sheets too but if he leaves it will only save us $230K against the cap.
Talk about a guy who never complains just comes in and does his job (when he is healthy) I will give it 5 minutes before Schneed fills us in with all his cap wisdom
are you serious? he's NEVER healthy...he may be a character guy, but he's nothing but an overpaid liability. every year we get our hopes up that the line will be healthy and dominant- he's missed 2 of the past 3 years. tough to complain when you are well paid and never have to do anything...

But for what we restructured him for, it's worth it to take that chance.

He missed 2 of the last 4 years. He was out in 2004 and 2007. He only missed one game total from 2005-2006.

He didn't miss a single game in coach or as a pro from 1999-2004.

I love how people say he just sat around collecting his check, as if he really was hoping to shred parts of his body and spend countless hours rehabbing.

I always wondered if a $1 of signing bonus counted less against the salary cap then a $1 of base salary or do players just consider a $1 of signing bonus more valuable then a $5 of base salary. Anyway looks like we're 107k over the cap.

I'm a fan of Jon Jansen. He had two freak injuries at the beginning of two seasons. He played with two broken thumbs. He's a tough S.O.B.

Admit it, some of you guys stayed in bed on a Sunday, feeling Saturday's hangover, while this guy was kicking somebody's butt.

albright is just a 450k hit, and right now the top 51 doesn't matter, because i don't believe we have 51 guys with all the free agents.

well, if you get hurt, you can lose your base salary, but not the bonus money that's upfront.

on a one year deal, it doesn't matter (SB vs base) as long as you don't get cut midseason.

over 5 seasons, the 1$ sb counts 20 cents each year (but the player gets it all immediately), whereas his base of $5 per season is paid over the season per game that he remains on the team's roster.

lloyd got 10$mill in bonus, so even though he sucks, he's still made a TON of money, and we haven't been able to cut him because of the huge cap hit (10mill over 5-6 years isn't a big deal, but cutting him after one season makes the hit 8$mill just to throw him away or 3mill to keep him... that's the really bad part of high bonus contracts. mistakes are huge and you've got to hit much more than 50% to not hurt your team... lloyd/arch are part of the reason we might not be able to get a guy like briggs or CJ, who would actually help the team get better).

of course briggs or CJ might not be the best way to maximize price/performance under the cap or total starter talent under the cap, but it's just an example.

any chance of Lloyd sticking around with a new coach? i would like to see the skins try one more season with him, because i have to think someone in the front office knew something when they signed him
