Re: Until we have both an Offensive line and Defensive line we will suck....
We've tried to BUY a DL with expensive guys like Griff, Carter and Jason Taylor; and hope a an occasional fifth round draft pick will hit the jackpot. The problem with using FA in one area is that it makes your depth very thin AND you end up with older players who get hurt easier.
You also have the problem of expensive FAs who come here for the paycheck! They hit paydirt and throttle back to last longer. Remember guys like Dana Stubblefield, Bruce Smith, etc? Feel like Springs is easing up this season? You've got to draft with some of your highest picks; pick up some modest FA talent [perhaps like E. James] and get the occasional big dollar FA. We've build our DL house with no foundation. |
Re: Until we have both an Offensive line and Defensive line we will suck....
Yahhoooo! so your telling me all we have to do is replace samuels, kendall, rabach, thomas, jansen, griffin, taylor, carter and we are good to go in 2 years?
glad someone here has it figured out. hey guys just replace 5 guys on O and 4 guys on D!!! (oh by the way, do it 2 years or you gotta replace the qbs, wrs, rbs, cbs, lbs, safeties as well) fu&&in awesome!! damn its awesome to be a skins fan. atleast when we finally win one we, us true fans, will know the sweet taste of success. hard times only make us hungrier. |
Re: Until we have both an Offensive line and Defensive line we will suck....
For some reason this organization cant figure out that championship teams are built on their lines. Drafting WRs is much more exciting but they are not the foundation for building a winner.

Is it just me, or did it seem like Campbell had more time to throw when Samuels and Jansen were on the side line?

Re: Until we have both an Offensive line and Defensive line we will suck....
I've said it from Day 1, and I'll say it until I see otherwise - great teams are built from the inside out. When interior line play is addressed first, you can win with mediocre perimeter players, and you can be great with a few above average perimeter players. Drafting a bunch of receivers will be a waste until we get better play up front. On the defensive side, we've been Riggo drilled by the Cowboys, and now the Ravens when we needed our D to force a 4th quarter change of posession. We just are not very stout on either line, and will continue to be pushed around by the big boys of the NFL until Snyderato start to appreciate the importance of interior line play.

Man, you ain't kidding. When I think of all the WRs we drafted in 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 it just pisses me off |

well samuels is playing with a bum leg, but jansen is a liability.....the offense line only allowed 2 sacks....they didnt totally stink it up last night...give the ravens a little credit for good play. |
Re: Until we have both an Offensive line and Defensive line we will suck....
It sure would be nice to have a good, young DE to rush the passer, or some more depth on the o-line, both of which could have been accomplished in last year's draft. Instead, Vinny drafts not one, but 2 unproductive receivers, when the Skins only needed one unproductive young receiver.
But ok, you draft 2 receivers, b/c that was admittedly a position of need, now what to do with that other pesky 2nd round pick? Oh, I know, let's draft a TE, when we just signed our great young one to an extension, and we have a serviceable backup. That'll be great for all of those 3 TE sets that are so in vogue around the league these days. The good teams (Titans, Giants, Steelers, Ravens, etc.) all generate a pass rush w/ their front 4, the Skins don't generate a pass rush period, and the o-line has become a revolving door. Someone please put Jansen out of his misery and send him to go hunt deer with his buddy Ramsey.
Completely agree. I was so excited when we had those 3 picks in the second round thinking that maybe we had figured it out and was going to build thru the draft and have a great draft only to be disappointed with the fact we never even took one lineman with those top 3 picks. There was plenty of people on this site and elsewhere that thought it was a great draft and our lines were fine that are now coming around and realizing our lines are old and mediocre at best. Hopefully Zorn figures this out and addresses the lines. Unfortunately I think Snyder and Cerrato get too caught up with the 'sexy' pics of the next great offensive weapon being available and can't help themselves. Only a couple of QBs in the history of the NFL could win with average offensive lines, but many average QBs have won with great offensive lines. |
We can't freakin' pass protect and we can't rush the passer. Nothing else matters if we can't accomplish either. The f'ing Ravens won that game in the first 5 minutes of that game. We suck.............
I think that may have been because at that point the Ravens were pulling back on all the blitzing and were in more of a prevent mode. |
Re: Until we have both an Offensive line and Defensive line we will suck....
What is up with Chad Rinehart, is he any good? Hopefully he will turn out ok, if that is the case then that will be 2 possible starters for the OL in 2 years-along with Heyer, who just fell in the skins laps....Just trying to stay positive....
The DL on the other hand I cant recall the last time they drafted or picked up a decent undrafted rookie..... |
Re: Until we have both an Offensive line and Defensive line we will suck....
Didn't really hear too many complaints about the OL while we were 6-2. As the season is wearing on the OL is growing old before our eyes, that's what often happens over the course of a season with 30+ year old players across the OL (Samuels included). As their skills diminish they make errors in technique. IMO the FO was hoping the OL could hold up for this year to reload for 2009.
Bottom line is; we will have a bunch of cap freed up this off-season, we have our 1st & 3rd round picks, we have the skill players in place, Samuels should be serviceable for 2009, Rinehardt should be able to step in for Kendall, Randy Thomas will be fine, Heyer should be average at RT, Jansen will be a solid utility back-up. We need a C and either a top-notch LG or T from either the draft or FA. I've mentioned this before, I think Buges will retire after this season. For the Defense, the secondary appears to be solid with Rogers emergence as a solid CB, Hall should be able to be re-signed and hopefully stay on the "straight & narrow". We need a RDE, a DT that can generate a pass rush, and an OLB (and also the winning lottery numbers). |
