Re: Redskins signing rookie class of 2009

I think if Roydell Williams makes the team, it will be as a #2 or #3 receiver. I just don't see him as the type of guy to fit the #5 role that Thrash could. To me, the #5 WR isn't about being the worst or least experienced WR on the team. It's about a guy who you know can step in at a moment's notice at WR if needed, but most of his value is going to be on special teams. And not just as a returner, but as an all-around performer (blocking, tackling).

I've never thought of Roydell Williams as a special teams guy, maybe he is, I just haven't seen it. And we need to remember that with Khary Campbell and now Thrash we've lost arguably our two best special teamers. I'm more concerned about replacing those two guys in that capacity than at LB or WR.

But, I think the 4 WR stuff that Zorn wants to run, to an extent, will require a player like Williams to run. Right now, the predominant theory is that our 4 WR sets will include 1) Moss, 2) Randle El, 3) Thomas, 4) Kelly, and 5) Cooley. But, I have to wonder if that's the best use of our personnel. These are pretty much all third or fourth down and 6+ yard situations, so maybe in this case, ARE should come off the field for a more reliable hands guy like Williams who has made a career of moving the chains.

Additionally, what if someone is injured, and/or our young guys still can't lineup in the right place? There's nothing wrong with the four aforementioned players making our 4 WR set, but perhaps we should have a contingency plan in case one of them becomes injured or a weak link. Williams, could catch 20-25 balls for us as a *4th WR.

Plus, since there are 10-12 in-season roster transactions for any team, he could be a guy who gets released if the guys in front of him all exceed expectations. No harm there.

Again, I don't think we'd be rostering him instead of a special teams player. Last year, we went with 4 RB most of the season, with Shaun Alexander. This year, I think we'll go with 6 WRs instead.

Of course, San Diego might be willing to trade Kassim Osgood for a late round pick. We've thrown picks at lesser needs before, so I'd only be moderately surprised if we did that.
Marko Mitchell has no shot at making the 53 man roster. he at best will be a practice squad player this season. Unless we have a injury in camp or they trade ARE. If we keep 5 WR it will be Moss, ARE, Thomas, Kelly, and Roydell Williams (Titans). Thats my educated guess.
Yeah I said this awhile back (not to undermine what you're saying since we have more info now); he's this year's Anthony Mix it seems. Not to take anything away from him but we've just about guaranteed 4 of the WR spots and I can't see him taking the 5th. If he does, great. I just worry about what they said his weak spots are (running routes and was it reading the D? something else).

They're not guaranteed a spot on the roster just by signing you idiot.

Good call, I could definitely see some switching up of roles and having someone else come in in certain situations (such as the ones that you mentioned). And while it looks like Thomas SHOULD be the number 2, that's not set in stone by any means, nor Kelly at 4.

All good points, and actually I think the WR who can do (has shown he can do) the special teams "dirty work" like Thrash to me is Devin Thomas. I thought he had some nice glimpses on teams in games last year. But of course the hope (not yours of course since you hate DT :) ) is that Thomas will be the #2 or #3.

Of course, we'll need 5 WRs when my boy Chase is running the spread offense!

I think Hagans might just make the team

Hate to break this to you, chief but at the moment your wide receiving corps has just as many question marks as ours.

TO was head and shoulders above anyone on your current roster...

LOL..Is the NFL ready? But for that to happen Colt would have to send Collins packing and Chase would be the #3. JMO

I think Hagans might just make the team
I think, using DT on special teams, at least this year, would be using our personnel in a way where everyone could succeed. Of course, we'll just use Thomas to block Kelly when running 3 WR sets. In essence, that's the problem with drafting a guy that high: even if his play doesn't warrant it, he's going to get a chance.

Of course, based purely on the field product from last year, Kelly doesn't deserve anything either, but you know I've long held the belief that: if you have to wait until you have the player on the team to know where he stands, you're already behind in the NFL game. Which was really my whole beef with the Thomas pick. It's also why I said, after the Kelly pick (tongue-in-cheek) that we "were already admitting a mistake" to paraphrase myself. My whole issue was that we were going to take him, immediately and continually overrate him because we took him, and our offense would suffer because of it.

Of course, things are never as black and white as my edgy writing style would make them seem. There ARE ways we can develop Thomas. There ARE things that Devin Thomas can do to help this team win ball games (see his misdirection TD run). He can be a role player for us. But NFL teams [not just the Redskins] don't often behave in a way that would make me think it's likely that we do anything but try to fit him into a mold that he's simply not good enough to handle, and thusly we just waste a bunch of plays in games with him. A lot of my draft projections make the assumption that a NFL team will use a player a certain way, regardless of how his skill set suggests he should be used.

We took Devin Thomas in the second round, and we're trying to move him along at the speed of a second round receiver, which seems like just complicating the original mistake of badly over-drafting. I think the team would be prudent to take your advice, make him the next James Thrash, let him taste NFL success first, and THEN if he starts to light up his teammates in practice, use him on offense accordingly. Let him perfect a small section of the route tree, and he can come off the bench and help us with our big plays.

Unfortunately, no, this is not going to happen. Smaller chance than Hagans actually making the team :)

BTW, when did you 180 on Chase?

I like Chase, but only in the "guy got caught up in an unusually deep QB class" sort of way. I'd like to see him make the team, though if he ever climbed past 3rd on the depth chart, I'd be a bit worried.
