Is there a rule somewhere stating how the anthem should be sung? Maybe they should start handing out the anthem handbook before hiring these singers.
Actually there is. AR 600-25 and AR 220-90 and of course SHEET Music. |
Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
Whitney's version which everyone loves, was outside the rules as well
How about you take a moment at the beginning of your office meetings to sing the national anthem? Do the pledge of allegiance too while you're at it.
Personally, I don't need the anthem to remind me of the freedom afforded to me by our Constitution. To each his own I suppose.
Well the club I'm in does the pledge before we start any of our meetings. I love watching people reactions when we are having a meeting in a restaurant. We have actually had other people stand up and do the pledge with us. I'm the same as you but its also a tradition like no other. |

If you pull out the sheet music to the NA as it was writen I'm sure it looks nothing like how she sang the song. |

I'm not sure about that. Didn't she sing that with a military band? If she did change it up it was not very much. |
Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
c'mon Whitney Houston clearly put her own spin on it, that's why it's great
Either way I'm done with this foolishness |
So what should we do with her? Kill her, kick her out of the country, etc...? What would be good.
We are humans and we make mistakes, honestly IMO this is a little one, just move on. You know surgeons and doctors make mistakes as well that end up killing folks. I would worry more about those mistakes then CA's singing error.
The bigger mistake was not hers, but the NFL's for inviting her to sing it. If they've ever seen her perform, they'd know she'd wreck it with her American Idol-kangaroo with a seizure in an earthquake-style of over-vocalizing. If she's just sing straight, she'd be great. But, she goes for volume and OVERDOING everything. Ruins the talent she could be using. |

Yep, this is equivalent to the equally-as-important "how to fly a flag properly rules". If you screw with them, people will get offended. |
Its so we can remember our freedom to gather for events like the SB. They also sing it at small gatherings.

mental_floss Blog » Why do we sing the National Anthem at sporting events?
"After America’s entrance into World War I, Major League Baseball games often featured patriotic rituals, such as players marching in formation during pregame military drills and bands playing patriotic songs. During the seventh-inning stretch of game one of the 1918 World Series, the band erupted into “The Star-Spangled Banner.” The Cubs and Red Sox players faced the centerfield flag pole and stood at attention. The crowd, already on their feet, began to sing along and applauded at the end of the song. Given the positive reaction, the band played the song during the next two games, and when the Series moved to Boston, the Red Sox owner brought in a band and had the song played before the start of each remaining contest. After the war (and after the song was made the national anthem by a congressional resolution in 1931), the song continued to be played, but only on special occasions like opening day, national holidays and World Series games. During World War II, baseball games again became venues for large-scale displays of patriotism, and technological advances in public address systems allowed songs to be played without a band. “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played before games throughout the course of the war, and by the time the war was over, the pregame singing of the national anthem had become cemented as a baseball ritual, after which it spread to other sports.
So it went from being spontaneous to special occasions to everyday at every event? It's usage has been cheapened to serve the needs of owners to elicit emotional reaction of the crowd. Great. |

Imagine, we can have 100,000 show up for a SB game, with no political backlash, and general peace, and at the same time another 100K+ are protesting for their livelihood. I know there is a different thread about it, but really, we are lucky. |

I really cannot recall any big emotional reaction from crowds when hearing the NA. |

Re: The Correct Singing Of The National Anthem
I understand how some are upset she messed up, but she didn't purposely mess up. This kind of stuff happens all the time. That doesn't mean she hates this country and what the NA represents.
If you want to hate on her for other reasons(music, personal life, etc.) go ahead, but people need to take a step back and direct their negative energy towards another direction. |
