What actual figures are you referring to? The cap numbers on this site are estimates based on information from different sources. It's normal to be off by a mill or two, but a $12M discrepency seems large. Of course it's possible, but your educated assumption of $4M is probably closer to reality.
LOL. OK, "actual figures" was a bad choice of words, since I have no access to those. I was referring to what this site shows, and I've seen a couple of other sites that do similar estimates. So I was referring to a kind of mash up of all those (with this site's being the best, imo).

Re: Redskins 2012 Salary Cap Status

I recall when reconciling to other sites in the past that CC's numbers reconcile closely with numbers put out there by JI Halsell, the former Redskins salary cap analyst under Cerrato. There were other sites tracking salary cap information by player, PCinOZ for one did a particularly good job and also reconciled closely with Halsell. But CC's numbers here varied a tad from PCinOZ in that the Warpath figures tied more closely in the bonus allocations based on publicly available information. PCinOZ made more assumptions on those allocations, whereas CC typically found the articles - often put out by John Clayton - detailing bonus terms.

In short, if you see a large discrepancy between this site and another quoted figure, this site is usually closer to correct. Neither the NFL nor the Redskins as a franchise release their official salary cap status. This site is the best for it. Tandler is a solid journalist by all accounts, but journalists usually don't carry strong accounting or financial analysis skill sets. He's not going to be able to explain the variance, and I doubt his source can either.

Actually I've been reconciling my sheets to PCinOz's over the last couple days. I've gone thru about 75% so far and we match up pretty well across the board. Will do another update in the coming days.

How many years can signing bonuses be amortized for under the new CBA? I have never been able to find that info.

Under the old CBA you could amortize signing bonuses over the life of the contract, up to a max of 7 years. As the old CBA came closer to expiration, the max amort period was reduced from 7 yrs to 6 and then 5.

I haven't seen anything in the new CBA that changes the old rules so I'm assuming the max amortization period is back to 7 years.

Actually, it was 6 under the last CBA and 5 in one year of it, I believe.

I have heard people say that it is 5 years under the new CBA, but not from anyone that I would put all my faith in.

EDIT: I e-mailed Andrew Brandt and he answered that it is 5 years under the new CBA.

Thanks Matty.

I tweaked a bunch of the bonus info in this update. No major changes though.

I have us at $36M of cap room. But I still hear the $13.4M credit number floating around. Seems high to me but the more I hear it the more likely it is I guess.

If you add in the $13.4M credit it would bring our cap room to about $49M.

WOW, that would be ridiculous, spend wisely.

I'd like to see him back with a reasonable short term deal. I don't think he's going to be in high demand and we already have two young backs that have shown they can get it done.

PCinOZ has a finance and business management background, is in contact with multiple in side sources, and assumes as little as possible on his pages. He has the Skins at as much as 43 million under as of today.

if healthy and comes back and can play in a similar fashion, 2 year 3.5 million would probably lock him up as your 3rd RB/3rd down back.
