Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins
This is sounding like when Shanahan was hired. And how did that turn out? But he's been to 2 SB's, blah, blah, blah.
No. The counter to the "he's won 2 SB's" and the critique of Shanny was "What has he done lately?" and "He didn't win without Elway." The counter to WP's track record of success, however, is not tied to any particular lack of success. Rather, the critique of WP is simply "I want an up-and-comer not some old guy" and "He's too nice we need someone who yells at players." Further, unlike Shanny, WP has succeeded as a DC at every stop, has succeeded with average talent, and his success is not tied to any single player. But, he's not coaching or playing on the west coast so he really can't be any good. |

What the F are we talking about?? Wade won't be cutting anybody, he's being considered for DC, not head coach. And then people are talking about this being same old Allen nepotism... ITS AJ SMITH MAKING THIS CALL! Am I on another planet or something? |

Am I on another planet or something?
My point was not that Wade would be Allen nepotism. Wade is AJ's call (thank goodness). But we still have some NFL good ole boy networking going on. Wade is a long-term homie of AJ, AJ is a long-term homie of Allen. I like the Wade hiring. But the process smacks of the same that lands us in last place every year. Given the way that this team has been run lately, I think everyone should be a little suspicious, bothered, or concerned when jobs (like DC) are handed to someone through networks rather than an expansive competitive search. At any rate, I personally cannot blame anyone who calls for business to be done a different way. |

Wade is a good choice and is not the problem. |
Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins
This is completely speculative, you have no idea if Norton can motivate better than Phillips, you're now just saying things with no factual basis.
Don't overthink it, Wade's resume is what it is for a reason.
Of course it's speculative. I'm saying that he's a former player that comes from a winning organization that has a great defense. They're fundamentally sound and tackle well. All reasons to give him an interview. He'll have the players respect the minute he walks in the door. Probably won't happen as they're only looking at 3-4 guys. |

He then brought in Marinelli, who in turn replaced Kiffin and led a turnaround on dallas' D. Not that Dallas is the ideal comparison, but it really does go on in most if not all hiring situations. The problem in the past is not the homie factor, but just bad decision factor. WP if hired would be a good decision factor. |

I understand that many teams network to find coaches, etc. If you actually know what you are doing, it can be a good way to do NFL business. Do any of those teams finish 4-12 every year, year after year? If so, I recommend they do things differently. Hiring "Allen's homie's homie," instead of just "Allen's homie," is not really doing things differently. PS "homie factor" and "bad decision factor" are not mutually exclusive. |
Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins
WP is super well qualified but we can't hire him cause he's not under 30? he wasn't a great HC, so we can't use him as a consistent top 10 DC? AJ smith knows him, so that makes it a bad idea?
man, there's some weird/weak sh*t going on in here. in a vacuum, who are the best DC's you could hire for 2015? probably WP and rex (who doesn't want to be a DC). so... if they're available, hire them. it's pretty simple. if grilliams was available, i'd take him too. he never did us wrong. |

Wade is a good DC. Why not have a more open process where we give folks with good records that we don't know personally so well a fair shake? If Wade really is the best guy for the job, the end result is the same. |

Am I on another planet or something?
Is it? How do we know that? We don't know exactly what AJ is going to be doing do we? I do agree with everybody that thinks that Wade would be a good hire for DC. He would be. It's a smart hire, and one I would make. |
Re: Wade Phillips to Interview with the Redskins
Bill Belichick, one of the most successful coaches in the league, has hired and re-hired people he knows. Everyone in the NFL gets hired because they know someone. I don't understand why is it so hard for people to comprehend this.
That being said, Wade Phillips is one of the best DCs in the NFL. I remember the year he went to Houston and made them into an elite defense on their first year of switching from a 4-3 to a 3-4. |
So are you saying that nice guys can succeed or that Wade Phillips will mandate that all of his players skip every practice and become alcoholics?
The latter would make for a nice 30 for 30. Smoot make it happen!! |
