Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
I slipped a disc in my back, couldn't feel my legs for a few seconds, and went into shock twice. I've also dislocated my knee cap and completely destroyed my miniscus(sp?) and mcl.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
Ruptured Achilles playing basketball almost 4 years back. Required surgical repair, 6 weeks in a plastic boot cast with heel lifts, followed by 2 months of PT. Whenever I see an athlete go down with the same injury (Jansen, Lavar, etc.), I know exactly how they feel and what's in store for them.

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
Oh yeah, and one time I did some X with my cousin and went walking around some strange neighborhood in Bealeton VA we didn't know anyone there... and we picked up all these Cacti (pl version of cactus?) with our bare hands thinking we weren't getting stuck...
We were. Then later I peed outside and got prickers on my shaft and that was excruciating...(sp?) |
Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
Broke my nose playing Rugby and got a concussion at the same time. My nose 'clicked' for years afterward when I moved it from side to side.
Tore My Achillies tendon playing Ball Hockey the final game before the playoffs. Worst. Pain. Ever. I heard a loud SNAP, and then it felt like I got hit in the back of my calf with a baseball bat with Sheffield swinging away. Seperated my shoulder laying out for a long pass in a 'friendly' bouncers tackle football game. Caught the ball tho... |
i basically had the same injury Bo Jackson had, my hip bone basically separated in half. did it while playing basketball( non contact) and this has to be one of the most painful injuries ever. i pride myself on being a tough guy, but man, that was some intense pain
dmek25 knows pain. Wow. :( |

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
This is from News of the Weird
Oops! Try to Read This Without Wincing: A cable broke on a leg extension machine at a YWCA facility in Akron, Ohio, in 2004, catapulting a steel bar forcefully at a 22-year-old football player working out for a shot at a college scholarship, hitting him squarely between his parted legs, whacking his left testicle. Three years later, he still walks gingerly and bow-legged because the slightest contact is painful (although he did manage to father a child in the interim). In April 2007, a jury awarded him $786,000 after hearing that the machine had been in disrepair. [Akron Beacon Journal, 4-11-07] |
Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
My first question would be, why is he working out at the Youth Women's Catholic Assocation facility? The YMCA down the street closed? No Gold's Gyms in Akron?

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
I have a pretty good sports injury story. When I was a senior in high school during lacrosse practice I got hit in the face with a shot. It was not a bounce shot, it was a hard ass shot that somehow snuck up under the left side of my helmet and hit me right in the corner of my jaw. The shot shattered my jaw and knocked me right on my ass. My mouth was bleeding for about 2 hours after that. We had to call an ambulance to pick me up, and they put me in a stretcher and took me to the hospital. It was horrible because my mouth was still bleeding, and I was lying on my back, I had a mouth full of blood, I thought I was gonna choke. I had to get my jaw wired shut for six weeks, and when they wired the jaw shut, it caused a hairline fracture I had in my chin (caused from the shot) to pull apart, so then I had to get a second surgery to install a metal plate in my chin. Which is stil there.
I had a liquid diet for six weeks. I ate a lot of soup and baby food. Plus, after about 2 weeks I'd put anything in a blender and drink it with a straw, and I mean anything. Pizza, steak, spaghetti, donuts, it used to be a joke with my friends to see what kind of stuff they could get me to eat after it was put in the blender. I also had to walk around with a pair of scissors around my neck because if I had to throw up, I'd have to cut the wires. |
Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
Oh, I also got nailed in the hand with a pitch in little league and broke my left ring finger. I have to wear my wedding ring on my right hand because the knuckle of that finger is huge and the finger doesn't straighten the whole way.
The pinky beside it is a little mangled too but looks good compared to the ring finger.
OK...it's splinted now...17 years later... :) The ligaments in the finger are slipped out of place and they shortened...keeping my finger from straightening. It's being splinted and I have therapy to stretch the ligaments back out and hopefully I can avoid surgery. It IS helping...after just a week, I can almost straighten the finger. The knuckle will still be too big for my wedding ring, so that will have to stay on my RIGHT ring finger. :oink: |
Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
Broke my freakin' toe...getting into bed. How the [expletive] does that happen? Have a care when you start to sit down with your leg under you. There's a thing called a sideboard that the left pinkie toe apparently refuses to believe exists.
My broken bones have happened during these hazardous activities: flag football(collarbone), riding a moped(wrist), badmitten(finger), coaching tee-ball(left forearm) and bowling(same finger). Now, I top it off with... getting... into.... bed(pinkie toe). Never broke a bone playing football, baseball or wrestling. Never broke a bone rock climbing, hiking, caving, white water rafting. |

Re: What's the worst sports related injury you've ever had?
got a dislocated left shoulder playing football with my buddies. sad thing was college lacrosse season started a few months later and while i still got my points and hits that year, everytime i would be in position to hit someone if it was with my left shoulder i would try and turn my right (good) shoulder into it.
point is: even if a player is healthy enough to play, when he has to think about getting re-injured and try to protect a certain part of his body it really effects the players concentration. every 10 seconds i was on the field for the entire season i would have my left shoulder in my mind. go presidents!!!! |
