ESPN is reporting that 8 Defensive Lineman coming out are potential 1st round picks. Skins chances are very good at # 21 to grab one:
See, there always seems to be a rush on defensive linemen in the first round, and this year will be no different. I can see all 8 of those guys gone before we pick at #21.

Next to franchise quarterback, an All-Pro DE or DT is probably the next most coveted place to find a star.

The 2008 NFL draft should feature at least eight defensive linemen selected in the first round. The most likely candidates include DEs Chris Long, Vernon Gholston, Phillip Merling, Derrick Harvey and Calais Campbell, and DTs Glenn Dorsey, Sedrick Ellis and Kentwan Balmer.

Long, Dorsey and Ellis rank among the six elite prospects in this year's class. Long earned the highest grade of the 2008 senior prospects I studied on film last summer, and his game was even more refined this past fall. He is versatile enough to play end in a three- or four-man front, and some teams think his best fit in the NFL could be at linebacker. Dorsey and Ellis have somewhat similar styles; Dorsey spent most of his time working as a three-technique at LSU, while Ellis did most of his damage at nose tackle. Regardless, both display the first-step quickness, explosive power and closing burst to disrupt in the NFL.

The remaining five projected first-rounders have a wide variety of backgrounds and styles. Gholston is an undersized edge rusher who might fit best as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. Balmer played tackle at UNC but might fit best as a 3-4 end in the NFL. Merling and Campbell are unusually big 4-3 ends coming out of the college ranks, and depending on the scheme, could play inside and/or outside at the next level. Finally, Harvey has the frame and speed to play a more traditional weakside end in a four-man front.

There are far more quality ends than tackles to choose from in this year's crop of defensive linemen, and the official combine list confirmed that feeling. Of the 52 defensive linemen invited to Indianapolis, 35 are listed as college defensive ends.

This deep group can be broken into three different parts. First, there are traditional ends that fit best in a 4-3 scheme. Some quality examples expected to be available between Rounds 2 and 5 include Lawrence Jackson, Darrell Robertson, Christopher Ellis and Jeremy Thompson. Second, there is a group of bigger ends who project better as inside players in a three-man front. Kendall Langford, Jason Jones and Johnny Dingle fit that mold and will be available after the first round.

The third group is best classified as rush-linebacker types. These are typically end/outside linebacker tweeners who lack the size to consistently stack at the line of scrimmage but are blessed with enough pass-rushing burst and athleticism to play a more versatile role, either as a full-time starter at outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme or as a sub-package edge rusher. Some second-tier examples will include Quentin Groves, Clifford Avril, Titus Brown, Jameel McClain and Jeremy Geathers.
As for the tackles, there's a noticeable drop-off in talent after Dorsey, Ellis and Balmer. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if Pat Sims is the only one to come off the board in Round 2. Sims came on strong as a junior (4.5 sacks and 15 QB hurries) and should test well enough to solidify a spot in the first couple of rounds.

Defensive tackles available on Day 2 should be viewed as potential situational contributors. There will be several undersized three-technique types capable of occasionally disrupting the opponent's backfield. The best of the rest include Trevor Laws, Letroy Guion, DeMario Pressley, Andre Fluellen and Carlton Powell. Then there are space-eaters like Marcus Harrison, Red Bryant, Frank Okam and Athyba Rubin, who will fit best in two-gap schemes at the next level.

Finally, there are a handful of small-school defensive linemen vying for spots in the late rounds. In my opinion, the three with the biggest upsides are Langford (Hampton), DE/OLB Curtis Johnson (Clark Atlanta) and DT Kurt Hout (Ferris State).
Mark me down for Campbell as well.
I like Campbell to. As I stated earlier the guy has had a season where he's gotten 10.5 sacks and this past year he had a down year with 6.5 sacks (hell of a down year). In my opinion hes probably hungry to regain that 10 sack form. And on top of that hes big enough to move inside with Phillip Daniels on Third and long. Also with Greg Blache on his ass he'll be able to push harder then he did last year.

Of course Vinny Cerato says that we're looking for an interior prescence so right now I see us going after either Chad Johnson or Kentwan Balmer. Unless of course Malcom Kelly falls to us, especially considering that Vinny see's him as a top 15 pick.
Anquan Boldin ran a pedestrian 4.71 at his combine. Not to say I could be in the league, but when I was in HS I ran a 4.67.

Nelson had more production at receiver in college, is faster that Boldin, and will likely enjoy the same level of success, if not more, than AB had in Arizona after a few years. Nelson needs to been in burgundy and gold come the start of the season.
if you want we can put money on it. the number of WRs that have 1500+ yards as rookies is almost non existent. I'll take that bet any day, and i'll bet AB's yards/game for his career remains better than nelson's too.

AB breaks tackles like no other WR, while nelson's highlights show him making speed cuts against college players that are generally much slower than standard nfl fare.

While I wont put money on it, because AB didn't even do it, I will say that "straight-line" speed doesn't matter as much in the NFL as acceleration and burst do. In college the hash marks are out wider making it easier for faster players to run across field and break due to their speed(see Reggie Bush).

I never said anything about putting up 1500 yards. I said the JNelson will have comparable success in the NFL, to that of Anquan Boldin. As for career numbers, I wouldn't bet on anyone who hasn't made it to the league yet (he could easliy get hurt and have his career fold, and as I result I would lose. Nice try though).

Jordy Nelson is probably one of the safest picks at the WR, easy.

It's probably because he doesn't weigh enough. If he could just gain about 93 pounds then he'd be able to get into that 4.4 range like Kenny Phillips. Another hundred pounds could push him up to the 3.6's.

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

After Further review, my first three picks are as follows:

1st ROund:
1a. Calais Campbell, DE, Miami - Can play DE on 1st & 2nd downs and DT in ideal 3rd down passing downs

1b. Quentin Groves, DE/OLB, Auburn - Can be a pass rush specialist for us, and he would be the fastest OLB in the draft if that were his primary position. So if Rocky regresses, he can step in

1c. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, CB, TSU - Shutdown corner with all the attributes. Kicked @ss at the senior bowl

2nd Round:

2a. Brandon Flowers, CB, VT - Someone here put me on to him, and he is a beast. The most physical corner in the draft and has superior man cover skills

2b. Jordy Nelson, WR/KR, Kansas State - This is a reach right now, but after the combine, it wont look like one. He can catch, block, return kicks, play special teams, and he can throw the pill. A former HS QB, he was moved to safety as a walk on, then moved to WR. He stayed there and had a monster senior campaign. He went 122-1,606-11 in his senior year, averaged 155.1 all-purpose yards, and never had a game with less that 80 yds receviing.

As a former walk on he has all the intangibles to be a great Redskin, work ethic included.

whatever, we can compare year by year for as long as he's in the league. he's NOT the safest pick, or else he'd be a lot higher than the third round. I'm not hating on the guy, but he's not going to make a lot of the plays that got him that one good year in college, and he's probably not going to be a stud nfl receiver.

I would bet he'd be consistent and that he could possibly put up decent numbers like a mike furrey, but drafted WRs without multiple years of proven success are generally a crapshot as far as nfl success, many don't produce till 3 years in, and we could improve more elsewhere immediately (like at DB, DL, OL, or safety) even in the bottom of the 3rd round.
whatever, we can compare year by year for as long as he's in the league. he's NOT the safest pick, or else he'd be a lot higher than the third round. I feel you, but no one in the BIG 12 could check or stop him, and the funniest thing about it, was that the team was so crappy that you knew the ball was coming to him. Yet, no one could stop him.

Just watch. Once he does his thing in the combine, he may make it to the bottom of the 1st round/early 2nd. He was only projected as a third, for the reason that you stated, because this was a breakout year for him and he never spent his entire career at the wR position (walked on as a safety).

He would be a steal for us in the 3rd based off of the production alone, not to mention his versatility as a return specialist.

Yes we need help in other places, but WR is a place we need to draft to build upon. He would bring the work ethic, toughness, and guile that is needed from a rookie receviver.

PS
Dont sleep, or you will miss the bandwagon ride to Jordy-ville!!!

To me there is an odd group of first round corners coming out of small schools. Guess we have Rasheen Mathis to blame for that, which is ironic because I liked Rasheen Mathis when he came out. However having two of the top 3 guys coming from Troy and USF is a little fishy, not to mention Kansas, which before this year was solely a basketball school.

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

Alright slightly new mock for Dirtbag359. To me this class gives us two starters and one potential starter that will definatly be a contributer in his first year.

1st - Calias Campbell - Phillip is 35 years old and Campbell has the size to play the left end. Also knows what it feels like to have a 10 sack season and is probably hungry to regain that form after a senior campaign where he only managed 6.5 sacks. Theoretically could move inside in nickle and dime packages and allow Campbell/Washington to rush opposite Andre Carter. Probably is a top 15 pick if hes allowed to come out last year.

2nd - Roy Schuning - would love it if Branden Albert fell to us but thats doubtful. This pick is a slight reach but he's the second best guard and he has an attitude that Joe Bugel loves. Played last year with running pneumonia, lost 18 pounds and never missed a snap. Has experience as a high school wrester and looks like a bigger version of Chris Cooley. Also played some tackle during his colleigate career.

3rd - Dre Moore - Has the potential to be an inside pass rusher due to his combination of size, speed, and quickness. Gets in the backfield and with proper coaching could turn into a solid starter. Had six sacks as a senior, the most since Shawn Meriman. Local product from University of Maryland that could be inspired playing for his hometown team, granted the Redskins are his hometown team.

Additonal notes: Wouldn't mind a guy like Kenwaan Balmber in the First Round but the draft is deep at pass rushing DT's and the quality LE's will be gone after the first round, in fact the next LE that can play both pass and run after Campbell/Merling is Kendall Langford who only was 4.5 sacks at Hampton.

Also with DJ hacket and Drayton Florance we'll be fine at corner and reciever, not great, but fine. Plus WR's in the draft are a crapshoot, ask the Raiders who have used the past few years drafting countless Recievers. Hasselback has also done great without a CJ/Randy Moss type. And for anyone that forgot the team with the great unit upfront beat the great Recieving core. We also got sent home from the playoffs early thanks in large part to Patrick Kerney.

Also I feel like the time to start rebuilding the OL is now. We suffered last year from not having quality depth and the OL is a huge reason why the team has been competitive in recent years. Plus three of our main starters are in their 30's.

Sorry SkinsFan91. I know Jordy Nelson is the sexy pic, but having the right guys in the trenches allows you to get away with a lot more then you would be able to otherwise.

Hey how many of you guys knew that Chris Long was Howie Long's son? OMGWTFBBQ!!!!

Also found this is USA Today
There's a chance there could be two Longs, who go No. 1 in the drafts of their respective sports.

"Long's brother, Kyle, is a 6-7, 290-pound, all-state left-handed pitching prospect who committed to play at Florida State in 2008.

Used primarily as a closer, Kyle Long struck out 67 batters in 32⅓ innings his senior season for St. Anne's-Belfield High School in Charlottesville, Va."

WTF! Does Howie Long have a daughter? Because those are some unbelieveable genes.

Man, I didn't even realize the 290lbs part. But seriously I had no idea that Chris Long was Howie Longs son. However I did just learn that he has three sons, GD!

I was so caught up in the guys that were going to around when we picked that I was barely focused on the guys going in the top 5. In fact the only top 5 guys I've really been paying attention to are Matt Ryan and Jake Long. Ryan because I feel like hes going to be a bust and Long because I have a lot of respect for the guys that play O-line.

Alright well looks like I'm changing this on a daily basis now. Also looks like this thread is becoming my own personal draft journal, so all you armchair draft experts, get your ass over here and.....DISCUSS!

Anyway two of my favorite draft prospects have fallen this week. UNC's Kentwaan Balmber and Campbell of Miami both had horrible combines.

Per SI.com:
"Calais Campbell, Miami: Campbell's struggles continue, as he capped a mediocre junior season with a poor combine. He measured just over 6-7 1/2 and 290 pounds, yet completed a measly 16 reps on the bench -- worst of any defensive linemen who participated. Campbell then ran his 40s near the 5.1 mark and looked winded at the end of the practice session."

- I know that combine results mean so much and I know its possible that Campbell could be suffering from Kevin Durant Bench Press Syndrome, but still 16 reps? I'll have to double check his wingspan before making a final judgement on that one. Also don't like the very high 40 time or the fact that he looked winded after running the very slow 40 time.

"Kentwan Balmer, North Carolina: Balmer was slow, running times near 5.3 seconds, and looked sluggish during the drills. He was late reacting to the instructions given to him by coaches and struggled changing direction in certain drills."

- Again 40 times mean only so much, but this guy is suppose to be quick. ThatGuy is there anyplace where we can see the combine test posted? I'll have to look around at your other post, I'll probably be able to find something there.

So today, my new mock draft goes as follows

1. Philip Merling - DE - Clemson - Alright well this is a quick edit but the more I look at this guy the more I like him. From what I've heard the guy is solid against the run and decent as an edge rusher. However the kicker is that the guy can line up on third down and play DT in passing situations. Also 17 tackles for loss is a pretty good deal for the 21st pick in the draft.

2. Roy Schueni-ing-er-man-da - G - Oregon State - While I can't spell his name yet I like the fact that hes a mauler. Also like his toughness and his wrestling background. Should help infuse the line with the "POWER OF YOUTH" as well as help get the running game back on track. Either way the time to start rebuilding the O-Line is NOW! Kind of ironic coming from a procrastinator such as myself but never the less. We can't wait until Jansen, Thomas, and Samuals are past the age of 35 to start rebuilding. Just look at the Chiefs and see what happened to them.

3. Dre Moore - DT - Maryland - First off I still consider 3rd rounders as first day picks. Either way Dre Moore got 6 sacks last year from what I'm guessing is the end spot in the 3-4, but as anyone who knows the 3-4 can understand, that spot is not a position where you're expected to get sacks. Also like the local flavor as well as the raw potential. If we can get this guy in the third round then I'll be thrilled.

Other First Round Picks
Brandon Albert - Great Guard that could also play Tackle someday. Plus he's a local kid.

Kenny Phillips - The guy might not be great, but I think he can be productive enough to help make our secondary great. As I've said before, Safety's are more improtant these days then Cornerbacks.

Malcom Kelly - Big WR with the speed and production to back it up. Probably going at #11 to Buffalo.

Quinton Groves - A little smaller then I thought. Originally believed he was a LE but when people start trying you out at 3-4 OLB then you know that the guys either around 250 lbs or hes Shawn Meriman. Either way guy has production and seems to be doing well enough at the combine to warrent 1st round consideration.

I was looking for Campbell's bench # and it kept showing DNP on NFL Network. 16 is awful for DL. I am offically off the Calais Campbell bandwagon. Bring on Merling or the best available CB as our #1.

I can see us taking Quentin Groves in the first. He can play DE or OLB.

Merling, I believe, only did 17 reps. Thats not good, especially for someone his size. Same goes for Campbell. I think for the 1st round we need to go for production and athletic ability with our pick. Groves can come off the edge on passing downs and even play OLB for us and be a play maker in the passing game. Having him would come in handy if Rocky's play suffers because of lingering injury issues.

He didn't have a bad combine either. Fastest 40 for a DE 4.57, 10 foot broad jump, and 30 reps. His production at AU was superior despite sharing time earlier on in his career.

Groves' athleticism, explosiveness, strength, and versatility would be a great all around addition for us in the 1st round.

Merling's fine, according to Football's Future, Merling put up 23 reps. Which is not great, but not bad either. My favorite part about him right now is he compares to Justin Tuck. Of course the same source compared Calias Campbell to Julius Peppers so I don't know how reliable that is.

However the big selling point for me right now is this.

When you play Madden, what team do you use? Do you put yourself on the team? Don't play Madden.

Thats tempting, and if a player that valuable falls to us at 21, then thats an offer we can't refuse. Unless he's going to miss the next two years due to injury then I'm all for it.

You got to figure the NFL is alot strenuous than college. If he cant make it though a shorter easier season it would be hard to take him. He is a great player and Yao Ming has a stress fracture and they will repair it surgically. Maybe, it can be repaired in that manor. Maybe, his foot, just needs time off of it. But maybe, he has week bones and can never stay healthy. Very risky pick.

Re: (updated title): Make Your Day One Redskins Draft Selections (Rounds 1-2)

Alright, it's a new day, so that means that I have to change my mock draft picks for the first two rounds.

1st - Brandon Albert G/T - Virginia - While Albert isn't my most wanted player from Virginia he's surely in demand. At this point I think that this is our safest pick in the draft. If I remember correctly he played his senior year at LG which is great because we weren't able to run to the Left side like we were when Dockery was there. He also has the potential to play LT, which could come in handy should Samuals get hurt (knock on wood). Personally I think he could get to Randy Thomas's peak level in three years. The best part is he has no injury concerns that I know about.

Pat Sims - DT - Auburn - At a draft deep along the DL Sims is a solid pick. Thats assuming that he even makes it to this spot. The good news is we could have Kentwan Balmer fall to us in this spot, but right now it looks like Sims is a 2nd round pick and from what I've heard the next best Interior DL at this point in the draft. I like how he explodes off the line and gets pressure on the QB. This could also continue the Auburn thing we got going though that didn't work out nearly as well as the U thing that has been the party line of recent palyer acquisitions.

Alternate 1st Round Picks
Kenny Phillips - S- Miami - A lot of experts have him down as one of the ten best players in the draft. I like the fact they he has athletism and on top of that he's probably the safest pick for us in the draft (save Albert).

Phillip Merling - DE - Clemson - The guys a complete player and he definately fills a need at end. However in a class thats exploding with depth on the DL I feel like we can afford to wait. Espcecially with our front office's ability to find talent after the 1st round. It's not that I don't like Merling, its just that I see Albert and Phillips as future Pro-Bowl caliber players.

Lawrence Jackson - DE - USC - Guys a disruptive force coming off the Left side. In my opinion he seems like more of a boom or bust type. He's one of the few prospects with 10 plus sacks and he played in a great offensive conference. Durability is a concern. Also don't know enough about his ability to stop the run.

Hold on, let me put on my Mel Kiper hair helmet. Alright there we go. Right now there is no way in my opinion that Gholston falls out of the top 10. The guy had an amazing combine to compliment a great season.

All week people talked about how Jake Long only gave up around 2 sacks in his career. Ironically one of those sacks was made by Vernon Gholston last year. He also matched Long on the bench press with 37 reps of 225 lbs.

Campbell is falling hard. He not only had a bad 40 time, but he finished last in bench press reps. Now the problem isn't the testing results themselves. What seems to be worrying scouts is that guy has a reputation as a slacker, and with all the preperation that rookies get for the combine test to mask their abilities its amazing that he did as bad as did. At this point I wouldn't be surprised to see him fall to the third round.

Phillips would be a great pick, but I don't see us being the new Lions with 3 safetys in the last 4 years. Oh well, at least our safetys pan out

Pass rushing DT is something we can get in the later rounds. And the best pass rushing DT thats available when we pick (Kentwan Balmer) also had a poor combine. With the availability of Pat Sims and Dre Moore I can see us waiting till the second or third round to get a pass rushing DT. If I had to bet on it I'd say we pick one in rounds 1-3.

If you want a playmaker then I suggest you take a look at Malcom Kelly, Devin Thomas, or Jordy Nelson. Sweed rarely had a big game against teams like Oklahoma and Ohio State. The only time he really made an impact was against teams like Sam Houston State and Rice. He was pretty good in the Red Zone though but I think we'd be better served taking an OL like Albert or one of the many great DL available.

Jordy Nelson and Malcom Kelly played in the same conference as Sweed and were able to make an impact against good competition. Right now Sweed is nothing more then an athlete. Let the Titans take him.

Derrick Harvey if he's there. If not then take Cromartie. If memory serves correct I do believe we've had some previous luck with taking 1st round cornerbacks. Depending on the direction we go in the 1st I would select the wideout from Michigan State in the second or Quentin Groves in the second.

Round 1: Unless Dorsey Falls to 21 I'd have to pick Dominque Rodgers-Cromartie CB of Tennessee St. He had a 4.28 forty in the combine. He has been training with Darrell Green, and has tremendous potiential. I think that he could play while Rodgers is down in the slot and hopefully develop under Springs and Smoot's mentorship.

Round2: Devin Thomas WR Michigan St.
He is big, strong, fast and he is a play maker. He could be that difference maker for the skins. He plays special team. According to fftoolbox.com "This past season, Thomas caught 79 passes for 1260 yards (an average of 15.9 yards per catch). He finished with 8 TDs and averaged 96.9 yards per game. Those numbers are good, but the Spartans were a run first team this year. Even more astounding is what a big part of their passing attack he actually was. The second, third, fourth, and fifth leading receivers for Michigan State combined for just 1228 yards this season. The fact that he could get open enough to put up those numbers when every team they played was gunning for him is remarkable."

Third round: Trevor Laws DT Notre Dame- He produces and can make an impact

- Again 40 times mean only so much, but this guy is suppose to be quick. ThatGuy is there anyplace where we can see the combine test posted? I'll have to look around at your other post, I'll probably be able to find something there.

kffl.com, my combine post when i get around to updating it later tonight, and nfldraftscout.com, if you have a paid subscription (my free comp code finally expired in february :/)... google cache may let you cheat on that, but it's slow gathering info that way.

i've been against campbell just because there's never been a reason to take him beyond the fact that he's big. he obviously isn't strong or fast though, and harvey, merling etc have looked like better players since the draft names came out anyways.
