We neeed corner help for Roy Williams. If he acts up cut him. Springs stay hurt too much we need a big time corner.
I didn't consider the very short term view (next game), but you're right - we don't match up well with the Dallas passing game if Romo is healthy, and he has Williams, T.O., Crayton, and Witten on the field together. If we can sign Hall through next season on the cheap, he would be on his best behavior to score a big contract in 2010.

some of ya are crazy DH is hot head yeah but when we have a team thats no one man takes away from the team. when u bring a player in to that environment its going to rub off. So we can really use a player like DH.

re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
- if he screws up we can cut him, very low risk
- we have the locker room, organization and tradition that wont allow hall to get out of line - he knows he will have to be on his best behavior b/c blache will not take any of his "me" crap - he will help on ST returns - we need him to solidify our no. 2 corner b/c of all the teams with 2 good receivers - he has motivation to play and behave well so he can get a fat pay check next year these sound like all the reasons the boys signed pacman, ones a hot head off the field the others a hot head on the field . . . . i wasnt one to bash the boys for pacman and hall is not nearly the potential trouble of pacman but talent does put blinders on when your talking about bringing that player to your team as opposed to your rivals . . . |
Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
I hope this isn't true. Hall is simply one of the worst guys in the NFL. WHY?????????????
|
Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
I am for it. I think with the troubles he has had in Atlanta and Oakland are directly related to the frachises. Look at those two, they have been losing frachises for the last few years, and its only getting worse. Look what people said about Randy Moss in Oakland, and look what happened when he went to a team with great leadership and more importantly, winning on the field. The kid is only 24, has a ton of talent not only at CB, but at returning punts (my thought on that also is Randel El wont be back next year) I think with the character we have on this team, in the locker room will get this kid pointed in the right direction. Springs, Smoot, Landry, Carlos are all extremely hard workers during practice, work outs, and are all great character guys. With London, Jason Taylor, Griffin, Marcus Washington, I really think this is something that we HAVE to explore and if possible sign him for the rest of the year or a relatively cheap two year deal.
IF anything, keep him from the Cowboys or Giants who are also interested in signing him. |
Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
and one more thing. Springs (as good as he is) is getting older. Signing him would solidify a really talented corner tandem in Rogers and Hall. Plus, if springs doesn't redo his contract he may be gone anyway. I dont think we are going to pay him upwards of 6+ million next year.

Even if Hall signed today I think the only way he would contribute against Dallas is by returning punts. Which would be a significant contribution. He's an improvement over Torrance and Tryon with more upside. His play, though, suggests he is not much more than a nickel corner. If the expectations (and money) are for a 3rd (or 4th in the short term) corner and punt returner than that is fine. If we think we would be getting a long term replacement for Springs I think we are probably fooling ourselves. While I will admit that the Falcons and Raiders were disfunctional organizations, Nnamdi Asomugha hasn't had much trouble being the best corner in football on that same horrible Oakland team. Hall was more than just a little bit bad for them this year, he has given up more catches or yards than anyone else in the league. Still, if it meant Torrance was relegated to special teams that would be fine by me. Leigh has to be a bigger liability in coverage than Hall would be. |

I'm surprised by this. If he's a backup for depth or starter while Springs is out, I'm fine with it I guess. Hope he doesn't act up.

Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
The number one mistake that bad organizations make is that they bring in poor coverage CBs because they have starting experience, and then in critical moments they decide to trust said CB because they have been there before. The end result is predictable.
DeAngelo Hall's career best YPA, which he's done twice (2005 and 2007), is 7.4. But his career average YPA through the last 3.5 years (I don't have his rookie numbers) is 8.0. As a passer, Tom Brady's career YPA is 7.2. On the Redskins this year, Hall's career average of 8.0 yards per attempt puts him behind Fred Smoot and Leigh Torrence in terms of production. Now, he's 24, and figures to at some point in his career, get a lot better. And ultimately, there is a right price for everyone. I'm just not sure that "Nickel back when Shawn Springs is hurt" is something that's worth signing a head case for, especially when you can already get the same production out of the guys on your team. Now, if we're talking about signing this guy to be our future post-Springs No. 2 CB at a cheap price while the value is low, I think this is a completely different argument. But based on how similar our coverage schemes are to Oakland's, I think Hall makes us a significantly worse pass defense in the short-term. He's also afraid of contact, which is Smoot one big redeeming quality is that he'll throw his nose in there and hit someone. |
Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
Vinnie was just asked the Question. Both he and Larry sort of glossed over it and did not answer. It did not seem like they were in favor of that possibility of Hall joining the team
|
Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
The catch-22 to this whole thing is if Springs was healthy, there would be no talk of bringing Hall in at all.
One the one side, Hall has talent to be a good corner and a good returner. On the other side, he got a TO sized ego, and has been suffering in Oakland. The Skins have the veteran leadership (Fletcher, Springs, Taylor) to guide Hall to make better decisions on the field. If we're talking small change, contract worded as such that he can be rewarded for good behavior, I see this as a small risk for a great reward. Worst comes to worst, Tryon is cut or Kelly is IR'd and we cut Hall in 2-3 weeks. Not saying I would like the signing, but I can understand it... |
:D You must be thinking of DANTE Hall.
I wasn't, but you make a good point. Looking at his NFL stats Hall has actually only returned 13 punts in his career. He was used as a punt returner at Virginia Tech, which is what I was thinking of. I suspect he was not used as a returner in the NFL because he was highly paid to be a cover corner (though unsuccessful in that role). It is also possible that his agent is naming the Redskins as a suitor in order to try and drive up the price on his client. That does seem to be a pretty common tactic these days. |

How about when Hall had the "Free Mike Vick" T-shirt on after Mike's trial and the Atlanta's coach quit. Sound individual.

Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
I hope we sign him.
In watching Raiders games (they usually play at 4 and I like to root against them) D Hall isn't usually beaten but in a bad position. Is that because of the play called, the philosophy or the player out of position? Only the coaches and other players can know. |

vinny on the radio show (if i remember correctly) said the skins have a mild interest in hall for a cheap contract, he didnt really give you any indication or anything outside whats been in the papers . . . . so i fully expect us to announce we sign hall to a 5 year 40 mil deal which steeply escalates after year 2 with a low signing bonus allowing us to opt out after this year or next if we want. kinda being sarcastic but it wouldnt surpirse me either.
go skins!! |
Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
I dont know an aweful lot about Hall's performance.
but I do know is name. Name recognition goes far with Danny....remember, we went 2 offseasons without signing anyone flashy....then we signed Jason Taylor....who has done nothing. I hate to say it, but, it is Danny's history to go after guys with big names that are short on performance. I trust what everyone is saying. This is a very educated group. I vote no....and guys...Torrence aint bad for 4th corner. He's probably the best we've had in years...easily |

Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
Our secondary seems to be fighting injuries every week. If he behaves himself, he can help the team with secondary depth and as a punter returner. He signed a one year contact and knows this is an audition that could possibly lead to a long term contract if he does well. He is from the area, I think he wants to stick it out here. He could have signed with anyone. Washington is a favorable situation for him. I hope he makes the most of it. I hope he can teach Rogers how to hold onto an interception.

Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
sorry to be so late on this, by at league minimum, there's no reason not to. you've got crappy unproductive players on the roster (like tryon) and if hall gets douchey, he can be cut at NO loss. there's no downside, and while he's not as good as his hype, he can play.
|
Re: Comcast: Redskins contact DeAngelo Hall, may have deal within 24 hours
The thing I don't like about DeAngelo Hall is that he lets his emotions get the best of him. Some players, when they get pissed, use it as motivation to play better. The last time I saw Hall get really frustrated, he gave Steve Smith and the Panthers 67 yards of field position on 3 friggin penalties. I don't want to see that happen to us in a tight game, then they start pickin on him, and next thing you know he's breaking down and either costing us plays through penalties or just by playing bad. His ego needs to be put in check. Because if he ever spouts off the media about how he shut down "insert nickle wideout" by holding him to 10 catches for 122 yards then that's gonna be about as embarressing as it gets.
