re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
How can he make the team unless they put him on IR? I say ditch him as cold as that sounds. The guys we have now should do fine, plus we can always draft a guy next season or two.

But you guys do realize this means we're getting DeSean Jackson in 5-10 years, right? Think about it, 1994 (or thereabouts), Casserly wants speedy, small Joey Galloway, Turner wants and gets big, tall Michael Westbrook. Now?Galloway a redskin, Westbrook out of the league. 2001 Snyder wants speedy, small Santana Moss, Marty wants and gets big, tall Rod Gardner. now? moss a redskin, gardner out of the league. 2008 Beemnseven wants small, speedy DeSean Jackson, Vinny wants and gets big, tall Malcolm Kelly. Now? Vinny out of the league...
So were going to get beemnseven? |

re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
IMO this goes to show when drafting WR the priorities should always go hands, speed, route running, and last and least size.
|
re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
Hands and speed are definitely tops.

aside from size isn't that about the order of Kelly's strengths? |

I say it's route running, hands, agility, speed, then size. To me this is how Jerry Rice became the greatest receiver of all time. Route running is first because if you can't get open then it doesn't matter how great your hands are. It's also above speed because when you can't run routes you simply run into coverage faster, at least at the NFL level. Also agility is above speed in part because it goes hand in hand with route running. Being able to execute double moves and quick cuts is essential to being a top receiver. |
You say that like Kelly is getting hurt in the games and from hits. Thats not the case.
Gary Clark had CHRONIC hamstring issues, but he found a way to suck it up for his team on Sundays. I just don't see that kind of toughness in Malcolm Kelly's make-up.

re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
For what it's worth though, Kelly was active for all 16 games last year
|
re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
What's the impact of going on IR? I know he can't play all year, but what does the team owe him? base salary is about all he's got on his contract. He's not making a ton of $.
I think IR would be good for him. Give him a year to think about it, get himself healthy & develop a routine for stretching & workouts. Anything I'm missing? I just don't see what the team stands to lose putting him on IR, assuming he meets the criteria by league rules. If not IR, I say keep him before galloway. |

I don't see how there is any downside to putting him on IR, if his condition warrants it (I think the NFL requires some proof of physical injury, and his seems very unprovable). But keep him before Galloway? that's crazy, Galloway: a) is physically capable of playing! b) was able to get separation from the Jets corners, so I think he will be ok against others in the league. c) is a solid consistent, if not outstanding, receiver If they don't IR Kelly, then the only spot he could take is Banks/Austin if they try to PS both of them (which I doubt) otherwise see ya! |
re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
Cut him, keep Moss, Armstrong, Galloway, Thomas, Banks.
Run 2TE sets with Cooley and Davis and we only need 5 WRs anyway. I keep trying to figure out why we want to keep 6 WRs with 2 great TEs on our team. I also see Portis catching more passes than he ever has in a single year, this year. |
re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
Yeah keeping a gimpy Kelly over Galloway makes zero sense.

Keeping players based only on potential is what got us in the mess that is the Redskins 2000-2009. Moron Cerratto and not moron but unqualified GM Dan Snyder basically GAVE roster spots to undeserving draft picks like Durant Brooks even though they were clearly beat out on the practice field and on the preseason playing field. What is the point of having competition, training camp and then preseason if you do not judge and then select the best players based on performance on the field. I think it is more than proven that the Al Davis system of falling in love with numbers like 6'4" and running a 40 in 4.3 is not a good way to pick football players. It is one small measure, but it should not be the main standard. I never agreed with us taking Kelly and Thomas just because they were tall and the rest of our WR's were short and that some how created a need. We had a need for great WR's regardless of their height. We won two SB with smurfs and our only tall WR Art Monk on IR. Give me great football players that will do well in the NFL. I don't care how tall they are or how many push up they can do. |

For a player with so much potential, there is little reason to outright cut him instead of just IRing him. Let him come back next year and compete for a roster spot, but don't count on him to be a part of the team when making decisions in the draft and free agency. |

If he's gimpy all year, yes. But if he's gimpy for a few games? Kelly is what, 23? Galloway is 39! Granted he looked good against the jets, not sure how much can he be counted on as the year goes on. I think the smart choice would be to IR if feasible. |

What makes you think he's just going to magically heal up in a few weeks? At best he probably needs a few months to heal up. So maybe he can begin to practice sometime near the halfway mark of the season. Even then he's no sure bet given his history. Hard to justify having him sitting on the bench taking up a valuable roster spot. Give me Galloway who's ready and able to contribute, right now. I would probably cut Kelly. Enough is enough. |
re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
I know it was asked before, but is there a limited number of spots on IR?

Everything I have read and learned about Hamstring injures is if you have a significant tear or pull, you are more likely to have many more in the future. It sounds like this is the situation he has now. It is going to be a chronic situation for him. Get rid of him. |

re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
Last year I was really hoping that Thomas and Kelly could push Moss to the slot at some time during the season. This year, I wouldn't be surprised if both were cut. (I think Thomas makes the team) I've been really disappointed in these two and I was hoping for a lot out of each of them. Kelly seemed more polish, but that guy must be made of glass. I say IR him and see if he can make the team next camp, if not, screw it, he can't stay healthy.

Seems like only yesterday many of us were ready to push Moss, Portis, and Rogers aside and move on without them...and now they're back to being integral parts of the team |
re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
I was ready to dump Carlos, but not the other two. I love those two, Carlos has gotten a little better however unless he can stop getting beat on those double moves then he should get the boot.
I say keep Kelly, but it just sucks that he's gonna have to go to IR. Wish he could be on the roster sometime this season but hey, gotta do what you have to do. He'll be here next year along with DT. |

Yeah, I definitely went through a "I'm done with..." phase with each one of them and now I'm like, "We'll be screwed without them." I will say I would like to see more consistency from Santana re:catching the football, but he's played pretty well this preseason, maybe new scheme and QB will benefit him more than I thought. I remember when I was pulling for Thomas and Kelly to be Brandon Marshall and Keyshawn Johnson lite, now I just hope they have some sort of career with the Redskins. |
Seems like only yesterday many of us were ready to push Moss, Portis, and Rogers aside and move on without them...and now they're back to being integral parts of the team
I still feel that Moss is a bit high-maintenance for the production he brings. He still has a lot of the skills that made him a top 10 NFL receiver from 2004-2006, and flashes them periodically, but he wastes a crap ton of plays by just finding the nearest defender and basically covering himself.
But with this year's team somehow even more thin at WR than last years, he's got to be the focal point of the passing offense, consistency issues and all. Portis, I'm good with. He doesn't have much long play ability (and really hasn't since 2007), but he's been explosive around the line of scrimmage all summer, and he won't be a detriment to our offense this year. He should eek out 1,000 yards again. |

You just don't cut a 2nd rounder like most people wanted. It was a bad a investment drafting an injury prone player, it is a double bad investment cutting him.

Re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
Regarding Kelly's IR...I've gone back and forward over this, but I don't think Devin Thomas is going to make the team. Brandon Banks gets that spot, at least temporarily. Kelly kept (stupidly, I might add) pushing himself to get back out on the practice field when he simply couldn't go, so the ability to IR Kelly and tell the kid to not get worked up over preparing week to week this season and to just be healthy for OTA's, that could save his career in Washington.
Or not. He might just get hurt again and waste everyones time. |

Re: Update: Malcolm Kelly To Be Placed On IR
Sucks for Kelly but it's a smart move for the team and at this point it makes the WR picture much clearer.. Moss, Galloway, Armstrong, Thomas, Austin are probably locks with the 6th spot coming down to Banks or Williams. Williams probably makes it over Banks because of his size and Banks can be a practice squad player.

Thomas is far to valuable (and proven) on special teams on coverage and return units plus he's done nothing in the preseason to warrant being cut. Banks has a muff, a fumble and a TD and adds nothing on coverage units. Don't forget also that he will be the backup PR, Buchanon will be the starter when the season starts. You don't keep 5-6, 155 one dimensional rookies over 3rd year players coming into their own. |

Banks, if he's not the starting punt returner, probably gets passed through to practice squad after dodging a round of waiver pickups.

If Thomas isn't here and Banks is that means to me he made it 'over' him. Bobby Wade says we can both kiss his ass for not mentioning him on either list. I'd expect us to bring in a WR who gets cut, either Davis or Clayton from TB. That won't happen until the Saturday cuts though I would assume. |

Shanahan was asked what he thought of Kelly coming out of college in 2008. He said DEN wasn't looking for a WR so he didn't study him [MORE] ...but Denver drafted WR Eddie Royal nine spots before Washington drafted Kelly. To me, that speaks volumes. 5 minutes ago via TweetDeck That is interesting * Reply * Retweet |
