I think Portis eventually ends up in New England as their nominal no. 1 back. But he'll be spitting with Green-Ellis, Woodhead, and Morris, so he'll be starting in name only.
I mentioned this a while back. But not sure now with the emergence of Green Ellis. Plus with the way CP likes to shoot off at the mouth sometimes, I don't think Hoody is a CP type of guy. |

Portis shuts up if the fear of punishment for his blabber is large, like with Shanahan. |
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Everything must come to an end. Wish Clinton had been better able to handle his critics, they always seemed to be a distraction for him. I wish him well in whatever he decides to do.
Davis had more in the tank when he left than CP does.
Thats a safe assumption Davis was let go too early for us. CP I hope he does have something left in the tank - but if he goes to some other team to me his legacy here gets tossed in the fire. We paid him a lot and put up with more than what he gave back. I still think he should finish with us before he sells his house and signs with another team till he gets cut after he breaks in half. |
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
I'm not sure he ever truly got the respect he deserved both on and off the field. In my mind, he goes down as one of the greatest players to ever wear a Redskins uniform.
That said though, it was time for him to go. His star was fading and when you're in the position we are you have to make difficult decisions. I've been a Torain fan since before we brought him in, but I don't believe he can carry the load and he's not as explosive as you'd like to see. My guess is they (if free agency allows them to) bring in a veteran back with some explosiveness to him and he and ATV share the workload with KW emerging as the #3 back. I don't think Davis or the other guy (Brown?) have much of a shot here |
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
CP was a great Skin and carried us to the playoffs twice when we needed to win out to lock up a wild card spot....with marginal QB play and no help from the passing game. He did everything Gibbs asked of him and at 205 lbs when he got here took the punishment of a 230lbs back. He attacked the blitz with ferocity and was our sole offensive weapon for several years (except for Santana). I loved Portis in the B&G and hope he lands on a contender.

Smoot; you mentioned several weeks ago that the Skins were high on a undisclosed veteran RB. Is there any new info on that?

~~~~~~~ He definitely has a better shot of getting to the Big Game sooner with the Patriots than with us. |
Saints going for Portis, Harris?
5:36 PM ET New Orleans Saints | Interested: Tommie Harris?, Clinton Portis? TopEmailComments Share With Clinton Portis released by the Washington Redskins and Tommie Harris cut by the Chicago Bears, ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yaskinkas says both players could find a home with the New Orleans Saints. Yasinkas says the Saints have a hole in their running back rotation. "Chris Ivory will be back and Reggie Bush probably will be back," he writes. "Pierre Thomas is likely to leave as a free agent and that means the Saints need someone to go in their rotation with Ivory and Bush." He also thinks Harris would look good in black and gold. "The Saints have Sedrick Ellis, but not much else at defensive tackle," he writes, adding, "I'm not saying Harris will come in and suddenly be a Pro Bowler again, but I think he'd be an upgrade for the Saints and that makes him worth at least considering." ----------------------- McIntosh is probably on his way to New Orleans as well once he's allowed to test the market. |
It's crazy to think i've been watching him play for the 'skins for 7 years. Where does time go?
I've thought the same. NE would be a good fit, hoody likes to bring in some old vets that can be used situationally & CP still can block. At the same time, they have tons of picks & you would think they draft a couple of RBs. That may be a hard roster to make. |
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
The thought has crossed my mind before about Portis going to NE. I think the biggest question is, with his attitude and work ethic, would Belicheck still sign him? He might get a little leeway if he produced on the field IN SPITE of his bad habits, but that hasnt been the case for the past few years.
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Saints would be a decent choice. Pass blocking is needed there.
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Assuming he wants to sign with a contender like his agent said last night on 980:
New Orleans, Indy, New England, Green Bay, Baltimore, Tampa Bay could all use another RB. New Orleans - always injured RBs Indy - Releasing Addai, retaining only Donald Brown and Mike Hart, both injury-prone New England - always a RRBC in need of another Green Bay - they had no running game at the end of the year. Turned out they didn't need one, but should be addressed. Baltimore - Parting ways with McGahee, so that leaves only Rice and McClain, who is more of a FB who can carry if needed Tampa Bay - a lot of subpar pieces. Is LaGarrett Blount reliable? Is Cadillac Williams still alive? Hopefully he'll return here for less money and a reduced role, but still as an important contributor. |
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Shanahan is still cleaning up the roster and trying to find "his" players. This is just another step in that process. I think the Redskins are still looking at 2012 before they start to really turn it around. With the mess they are in right now, its just hard to see them getting anywhere close to 10 or 11 wins next year.
CP is the 2nd best Redskins RB ever, he had a very good run in WSH. I've always been a huge Portis fan.
skinsfaninok, I hear ya! Its just that when you see the other 3 teams in the division that are settled at QB, Romo, Vick and little Manning, its just hard to see the Skins winning 4 or 5 in the division, which is what they need to do and CAN'T do year in and year out. In 2010 the Skins were 2-4 in div, 2009 0-6, 2008 3-3, 2007 3-3, 2006 1-5, 2005 5-1. The pattern is that you have to go all the way back to 2005 to find the Skins having a winning record in the division. Even then they were just a Wildcard team. |
I'm just a fan of Locker but even if we drafted Cam, Gabbert etc. I'd still be happy because it's time for this team to get a QB of the future. Even with JC it didn't have the "franchise" QB feel to it. As for the rest of the East, both Phiily and Dallas have very AVG defenses, so that will help. Lets wait and see what we do this offseason, maybe we can create a pretty good team. Go get Rice at WR bring back Moss, Add a NT and another OL and who knows, But you are definitely right about the QB, this team needs one ASAP! |
All of those teams need a starting runningback, with help by a backup. I see where Portis would fit nice as a guy who could spell carries with someone else, maybe getting 5-10 carries a game as a 3rd down back or something similar, but i doubt highly that any of those teams will bring him in as a "Starter", and pay him "starter money". Someone else on here said the most likely scenario is that he does a Brian Westbrook type deal, like around 1 million for 1 year, with incentives, so they can just test the waters with CP so to speak. IF/When he gets hurt, they wont be on the hook for huge money. His age and the kind of money he in all likelihood is seeking might be a hinderence for him to sign on with a contender team. |
He could retire... depends on what his expectations are. He's simply not going to find a starting job in this league carrying the ball 20 times a game. If he's ok with being a role player at a decent $$, I'm sure he can find work.
This should clear it up what he expects. I wouldn't adopt that mind-set."
Also, if you know who to follow on certain message boards, you'll know who the insiders are that give good info. Two of the three insiders I know of have all said Portis is NOT coming back at any price. One went on to even comment that Portis and Shanny really didn't like each other to begin with and that Portis love has always been with Gibbs and Snyder. His stay in DC is over. |
All the best Clinton. Thank you!
Good point. Early on, when he had a healthy Chris Samuels and Randy Thomas, a younger Dockery with a more-motivated Sellers and with Raymer at C instead of Rabach and the legend Ray Brown...he had a good line. The last few years though, he did a lot with no help in front of him. |
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Redskins release Dockery...
"Rich Campbell Was skedded to make $3.8M. Easy decision. RT @Insider: #Redskins have released LG Derrick Dockery. Doc said Shanahan informed him today." |
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Dockery was an easy decision. I was excited about having him back but he's just not what he used to be, and isn't fit for the zone block scheme.
When we had C. Samuels-R. Thomas-C. Raymer-D. Dockery-Ray Brown...it looked like we could have a second coming of the Hogs. They WERE great for a while. Too bad it didn't last. |
Re: Shanahan: Portis will be allowed to test the market (updated: Portis officially released)
Dockery news should probably be in a separate thread
