I like the signing. I thought Moore would turn out well and he still may....but when you get your chance you have to take advantage of it. Competition is a GOOD thing. Shannahan has shown he doesn't care what you get paid...you EARN your starts. Good move.

Does Atogwe have much left in the tank? I'm not too excited about this move. It seems like patchwork, using worn out patches.

hooskins 03-04-2011 08:00 AM

So any details on how the salary is spread? If its a typical skins contract its all bonus, low yearly with the salary jumping towards the end(when he can be cut). Wouldn't be opposed to that.

great signing.now when the draft comes we can worry about filling the needs at OLB,QB,and NT.

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

I have a feeling, not based on any new info just my opinion, that this signing is an indication that they want Barnes to focus on CB and are fully prepared (maybe prepared isn't the best word) that they won't be coming to a final agreement with Carlos Rogers and plan on moving on without him.

Again, just speculating here

Longtimefan 03-04-2011 08:36 AM

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

^^Looking forward to the tandem of Landry and Atogwe at the safety positions. Barnes has made it clear CB is where he'd rather play, should Rogers decide to move his wish may be granted. With Landry, Atogwe and Hall our secondary has playmakers.

Atogwe is a good player, a solid player. I think the doubters will be pleasantly surprised once we see him on the field. Definitely an upgrade over Moore or anyone else we've had back there with Landry since #21 roamed.

Love it, despite what Kareem Moore/Drew Doughty might be able to do in theory, these two are just downright BRUTAL. Landry will get to spend 80% of his time in the box doing what he does best while Atogwe can actually succeed against the passing game.

I usually check walterfootball.com every now and then, but wow this analysis just ruined that website for me.

Taken directly from walterfootball:
I'm going to be honest. Daniel Snyder is a f***ing moron. Look, O.J. Atogwe is a really good player. But what the hell are the Redskins going to do with him? He turns 30 in June. Washington is a team in rebuilding mode. When they're finally capable of competing for a playoff spot, Atogwe will be old and ineffective.

This signing makes absolutely no sense. But then again, nothing Snyder ever does makes any sense. It's really amazing that year after year, Snyder continuously makes the mistake over and over again.
Damn Snyder!! What are you thinking trying to improve our dreadful secondary!! Especially since we all know it was only you who made this decision!!

Found that out last year with their draft coverage.

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

I think OJ will be an upgrade over moore/doughty/horton no doubt but right now im thinking i would have rather used that money to resign carlos. Now we have 2 probowler player/contracts in the safety position. We cant have probowl contracts for every starting position and expect to retain any depth.

I would have liked to seen us ride with moore into this next season. Yeah he looked bad at times this year, but i think in certain spots/positions we need to give our young guys a chance. The safety position opposite landry was one spot I thought we could get by with for one more year giving our young drafted players a 2nd year in the system and injury free before we put up 26mil and relegate them to permenant back up/ST positions.

im kind of a moore, carlos and doughty homer. not to say OJ wont be worth it or provide haslett with enough confidence that he can open the playbook more with not having to worry about keeping 2 guys covering deep.

MTK 03-04-2011 10:08 AM

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

OJ's contract is pretty cap friendly, not one that's going to prevent us from keeping someone like Rogers.

I think we need to remember, these guys have never won us anything. I think Reed and Moore are depth on a team, not starting material. Carlos is talented and Ive been a strong supporter, but if he is going to be a b*tch and wants crazy ass money, he can walk.

Atogwe is a major upgrade to the free position, we probably had bottom 5 play in the league at that position last year.

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

I hope so. What i really hope for is that we dont sign known cowboy fan and skin hater kris jenkins. eff that fat boy with bad wheels.

Chico - yeah i agree with you that guys like moore, doughty horton make for good depth players and moore seems like a baller who can lay the wood . . . you know, thinking about it more, neither one of the 3 safeties not named landry can roam a backfield and that is a major need which OJ can fill.

I think Moore and Doughty have proved their worth... as good backups.

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

I don't know what to make of this signing yet, but so far Allen's impact on contracts has been pretty significant. He doesn't allow deals that burden the team.

So from a financial standpoint, I have confidence that this deal will be ok for us. From a roster standpoint, I'm not sure. If he returns to form & adds a lot to the TO count, it will be worth it. I could also see him playing avg. & getting too old for us. He needs to be on top of his game in 2012 for this deal to make sense, that's when the team should be expected to win.
I think Moore and Doughty have proved their worth... as good backups.
Doughty is always steady as a good backup/special teamer. Moore looked so promising in limited action in 09. If his knee was a problem last year then I can accept that as an excuse for his play. His tackling, or lack thereof, was perfunctory at best though. I hope he can regain his form & play the way the coaches were raving about in camp last year. If not, based on 2010, can't argue w/the staff decision to try to upgrade.

When it come to the free position IMO you need major atheletacism in your player and with any safety position as your last line of defense you need to be a good open field tackler. Moore has atheletacsim (when not dinged up and injuried) but a horrible tackler IMO. He whiffed many times last year especially on the edge in run support. Reed is a decent tackler, but lacks in atheletacism. Reed is a strong, closer to the line safety. At free he is out of position.

Atogwe is gonna take some chances and will miss, but he should cover the field much better sideline to sideline, decent tackler and another vetern presence in the secondary isnt a bad thing. Ohhhhhhh did I mention the turnovers, that is a big plus

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

I guess I'll be the only one who's against this. It looks like he a proven playmaking type of safety, and the contract makes sense. But he's almost 30 and by the time this team plans to be a contender, he's going to be on the downside of his career. You get a player like this when you're on the verge of contending. So to me this is just another band aid type move.

Are you seriously comparing the career of Sean Taylor to those other Hall of Fame greats? Really? Am I missing something? Did Sean Taylor make the Hall of Fame? Was he even remotely close? Hell, did he even make a All-Pro once? Nope. He wasn't as good as you all make him out to be. Sure, his death was tragic and it ended a person's life in his prime, but let's not pump him up to be something he wasn't. (a legend)

I think Atogwe has every right to wear the number considering the guy wore #21 in college and in the pros. (i know he's said he's not wearing it though)

edit: I like the signing, and hopefully it works a lot better than the Archuletta signing...lol

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

This is a great signing because OJ is a coverage FS, which we have been lacking for year since Talyor's death. Laron will now have the full freedom to roam around in the box and make plays as long as he can stay healthy.

In a 3-4 you need great lineman and a strong back secondary. I think we know have a strong back, now its time to get young up front.

Mechanix544 03-04-2011 11:00 AM

Re: REAL football news - Skins sign Atogwe!

This instantly upgrades our secondary to best in the NFC East...........and should we sign Rogers, and have barnes as our nickel, and Moore as a capable safety backup, we are actually in a damn good position concerning the secondary.

Be optomistic people!!!! The chess pieces are starting to move.

Now if we could scrape out a 4th for Haynesworth and McDrabb, and pair em together for a 3rd round pick, we'd be good for the draft.

So, given that:
1- your pro's (proven player, apparent good contract) aren't enough for you to have a positive response,
2- the team has more pressing needs (at least NT and QB) that have to be addressed in the draft

How should the team have addressed the FS spot in your opinion? or are you saying that you are good with Doughty/Moore until a high draft pick could be used for the position.

Left in the tank? for crying out loud the guy is 29 going on 30. Think Ed Reed, Charles Woodsson, Troy Polamalu (turns 30 befor Atogwe, and a host of others who are very productive at this age.

I think behind and Reed and Charles Woodson, he's created more turnovers than any other defender in the NFL since '06.

To alot of people Taylor was the best Redskin they have ever seen play the game. People under 25 didn't really get to enjoy D Green let alone any of the others. Also his death had a very large impact on the team/community. I dont think players or fans would appreciate another player wearing that number.

I was just using your line of thought...if a great player has died and some time has passed, forget about him and hand out his number! :D

All that I listed + #21 should stay in the Ring of Honor and off the field. There's probably a few more too. We roster 52 guys, we can afford to put a dozen out of service if warranted.
