Interesting insight by Adam Schefter re the Polians... He likened the situation to back in '92 when Pat Bowlen fired Dan Reeves after so many years. Bowlen was quoted back then as saying "I wanted my team back." He said Irsay and Polian have snapped at each other more than once this year, and Polian is that same kind of strong presence like Reeves... Irsay wanted his team back.

It must be tough. If you are Polian, you are so invested in things that it must feel like "your" team. But it is no surprise if the actual owner is unhappy with that.

He wants to go somewhere with an established QB. To me he's a perfect fit in San Diego.

Ahhhh good point. I think Fisher would put SD back atop the AFC West.

But a really, really nice opportunity for Fisher. He was "stuck" in AFC South facing the damn Colts all those years. In SD he will have a great QB and coach the defense up overnight.

Probably nothing unless they decide to blow up the team. However, I am sure Lovie Smith is in no mood to start over after having such a promising start earlier this season. Besides, the NFC North is going to be very competitive next season.

SIDENOTE: Interesting point by Clayton on Fisher:

"John Clayton
the other reason Fisher might prefer St. Louis over Miami is that he can pick his GM. MIami has Jeff Ireland already in place"

Re: Coaching Changes

Very true for now, but that could always not be true at this point next year.

I'm surprised that Norv is getting yet another shot. I'm just saying that if we're going to say he's unaccomplished as a HC, we're talking out of both sides of our mouths.

SmootSmack 01-03-2012 05:05 PM

Re: Coaching Changes

Posted this months ago, but I guess I'll post it again

Shanahan's Broncos also finished 10-6 two times and 11-5 another time but did not win the division. And one of Norv's division titles came with an 8-8 record (same record as Shanahan's Broncos and as Zorn's Redskins...who finished last in the division)

Re: Coaching Changes

And all of those accomplishments are now 7+ years old, replaced only by failure and disappointment.

I think the Chargers had a great argument to get rid of Norv, which is that you don't pay your coach for things he accomplished many years ago. They still think they can win with him. They probably can, but they are more faithful than their fanbase is.

Tripp just not gonna let up on the hatte. I think we saw significant improvement on the defense, which Shanny stated was his first priority. Offense will be the focus this offseason. I want to see how Kyle and Shanny do with some real quarterbacking. Hopefully we see the same type of improvement on offense.

I said yesterday that if you look closely, you can see signs that the offense is improved, maybe even much improved. I also agree with people that say the defense is improved.

There is something to be said for incremental progress in the face of consistent personnel gaffes. I might not be the one to put it into words, but I'm also not here to deny that good moves have been made, and it's those good moves that are responsible for the offensive and defensive progress from 2010 to 2011.

Idk how the Chargers want to keep Norval. He took a good Chargers team and turned it into something whose on field production does not match the talent level.

Mike Martz is nice if you want your QB destroyed every other play. Everywhere he's gone, his QB hasn't made it.
