Yeah I don't get it either. We could have found a once in a lifetime kind of QB that could bring this franchise back to a level of respectability we haven't seen in 20 years. If that's not enough to get you excited I give up.

Re: Grade the Redskins Moves So Far
Maybe a better way to say it is don't overpay for potential in free-agency. We (knowingly) used much of our cap space to sign an inconsistent performer in Garcon. IMO that qualifies as overpaying pretty much no matter what. The Morgan signing is even more perplexing given he was cut by a SB contender team that needs more production from WRs. So SanFran doesn't see him as a starter, and he's coming off injury. Back to Garcon, it's significant P Manning didn't lobby Garcon to wait in FA and sign the same place. Obviously if Manning said to Garcon "you're coming w/ me" and said to Denver "he's coming w/ me" it would have happened that way.
I don't see any significance in it myself. I think your theory is a stretch.

I don't know how realistic that would have been, or how fair that would have been for PM to ask that of Garcon. When free agency opened PM didn't even know where he was going yet. So to ask a guy, hey wait a few weeks for me to sign, pass up some big time coin along the way, and possibly have to take a discount to come play with me in the city of my choosing? Doesn't fly if you ask me. Hell even Wayne didn't follow him, does that mean PM doesn't like him too?

I think 99% of the Redskin fans are excited about RG3. It's just a lot to give up for one guy. But I'm not so much concerned about him and his ability. That's not in question. I'm more concerned about the organization that he's coming to.

Can you elaborate on that? The on field product (roster around him) or the organization and its structure (Shanahans, Allen and Snyder)?

VegasSkinsFan 04-12-2012 04:24 PM
Thanks for the correction on Morgan...he wasn't retained by his former team. Definitely think RGIII factored into the decision and even remember reading it somewhere. Also read a Garcon quote that made it plain Manning didn't extend an invite or anything of the sort. Maybe I'm reading to much into it...but knowing how important chemistry between QB/WR is I tend to think Manning would have liked continuity in his supporting cast.
One thing I like to do is read opinions about players from fans of the team that lost him. The vast majority of the posts on SF forums were sad to see him go. For a young player that's a very positive sign. To flip it, think of what jet fans see with what a lot of people have to say about Landry.

Honestly I haven't been on a Niners board, but one of my guys in the office is a longtime fan and doesn't think Morgan is a legit starter. He's supposedly not fast enough to outrun CBs and safeties. He sounds like a lesser version of Gaffney but doesn't know the system.

Snyder, KS and MS. I don't trust any of them. This kid is going to need stability. All of the great QB's in the NFL have it. They stay in the same offense and their offenses are molded around them. I'm skeptical if that will happen here. If we win 4-6 games next year, which could easily happen, will Snyder stay the course? Will the Shanahans design an offense around RG3? We'll see.

If Kory L is healthy and back to form, he's certainly more than capable at LG. Overall, the health of our starters on the OL will be key.

I thought we already re-signed Carriker? And I don't quite follow what you mean in value...Kory L. starting is that much better than his backup starting? I don't remember him being being above average...

Lichtensteiger will be back by training camp. Montgomery was signed to a 4 year extension before free agency started, I think. And Adam Carriker signed a deal to stay in Washington too.

I know we've got all those guys back. By value, I really meant include them when talking about addressing the o-line. Because it's often as much about who you are able to keep as you who add.

Montgomery is versatile and Kory is young and was actually doing very well at the end of 2010/start of 2011 before he got hurt

This. It's amazing how little respect Kory L. and Will M. get on here. They're not world beaters but both of them are very solid for what we ask of them.

Smoot, some of the ES insiders have been hinting that Jim Haslet is on borrowed time, and that if Raheem Morris can pick up the 3-4 defense, then he'll be the new DC the following year. Heard any rumblings?

Re: Grade the Redskins Moves So Far

I like the way Montgomery and Lichtensteiger has played. They are indeed solid contributors to the Redskins offensive line. I haven't witnessed Montgomery allowing the type of penetration that Casey Rabach allowed. Will Montgomery really isn't a bad center/guard. He's just underrated. As for Lichtensteiger, I'm satisfied with the way he's play for the Redskins on the offensive line the past couple of seasons. I expect him to be even better when he comes back from his ACL injury.

Following year I don't know about that. I don't think Haslett has ever really comfortably established himself here and I don't believe he and Shanahan (Mike) always see eye to eye.

Anyhow, there are plenty of people who believe that ultimately MS will move full-time up stairs and the new leaders of the team on the field will be Kyle and Raheem-with one as head coach and the other as assistant/associate head coach/coordinator.

But I don't expect that to be next year

hail_2_da_skins 04-13-2012 11:24 AM

Re: Grade the Redskins Moves So Far

I voted B, better than expected. I like the move up to get RGIII or Luck. The organization realized that the quarterback play was mediocre and needed to make a drastic move. They gave up too much because there are too many other teams with similar situations. I like the aggressive move. The grade could have been an A if Fletcher was under contract. I think the salary cap penalty has made the Fletcher deal difficult. I'm skeptical about the wide receiver upgrades. I think there will be a lot of competition in training camp, but I don't see any clear #1 and #2 receivers. The secondary upgrades added depth, nothing more.

It's almost humorous that after two terrible seasons there would be any anticipation/expectation about how Mike and Kyle will run the team beyond 2012. Win some games and make the team competitive then we'll "talk" lol...

There would have to be injuries of catastrophic proportions for us to win 4-6 games this season. Even IF that's the case, the hopes of a short leash on Shanny are wasted. He's locked in for 5 yrs, especially with a rookie QB. There may be some movement on assistants (Haslett's deal is up after this year) but the big 3 (MS, BA, KS) will be here for the duration.

Thats probably because a vote for (B) requires a "better than expected" attitude and we have been expecting the Redskins to go after a QB this draft. Also the Redskins are notorious for giving up picks for just one guy so again, very expected and ordinary. With that said I think even those who voted (C) are excited about Luck/RG3 possibilities.

So you are the type that is going to call one of the boldest trades in NFL history, ordinary. I can understand love it or hate it, but to call this offseason ordinary is delusional. Last year we were expecting a new QB, and we got two, Beck and Crumpton,. Infact, I have been looking for a new Qb every year, since we lost Rypien. All I know is, I am extremely excited, and the Redskins are doing everything in there power, minus 36 million, to make this team better.

When I wrote pretty ordinary, I didn't mean in terms of the magnitude of the move in terms of its "front page headline" ability, but in terms of pretty ordinary as in we didn't get better or even get worse. We kind of just stayed the same
