Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
Let's face it. This Redskins team has to be different offensively if the team is going to have at least a winning season. 9-7 is not far fetched. Another 6-10 or 5-11 season would be like going backwards and would reveal that the team hasn't improved. But with the additions along the offensive line from the draft to go along with picking Griffin III and Cousins in the draft, the Redskins signed Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan in free agency. I'm thinking this team played well at times last year even with Grossman at quarterback. With RG3 at QB that will certainly make a difference. But it will be the team's defense that will carry this team. If the Redskins can make the playoffs, I wouldn't be surprised. I expect them to improve on last year's record by four games. 9-7 is fair to assume.
I hold the opinion that no matter what happens with this season, Snyder is going to invite RGIII to his home at the end of it and is going to ask him very bluntly if he thinks Mike and Kyle's system plays to his strengths or not. He's going to ask Mr. Griffin if he honestly feels he can be a success in it.
If he says yes, they will be here 2013-1014. If he says no, they're gone ... or at the least there will be an ultimatum; i.e., your boy goes and you get a new OC in here or you both go. It's as simple as that, IMO, unless we went to the Superbowl. Snyder isn't going to let Mike and Kyle ruin RGIII. He gave up a lot to get him and I think he knows it's in the organization's best interests to do everything to make sure he succeeds, and if Mike and Kyle gotta go for that to happen, then they gotta go...
As long as we don't end up with a new defensive coordinator that runs the 4-3. The pointless change from a 4-3 to a 3-4 and changing personnel literally added a year to our restructuring. If we would have just left the solid defense we had in place I think we'd be a lot farther along at this point. |

That's sort of argumentative but I understand what you're saying. Mike Shanahan felt that the defense had to be changed in order to cause more turnovers. Although the 4-3 defense under Greg Blache had a top ten ranking, it still left much to be desired. A lot of the more successful defenses in the NFL are running the 3-4. I sort of like it. It took some getting used to, but under the 3-4 defense the Redskins improved drastically from a 31st place ranking in 2010 to a 13th place ranking in 2011. |
Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
I wouldn't trust Mike Shanahan with getting a personnel for a 4-3 variant. Denver's defenses during the latter part of Shanahan's tenure...let's just say didn't perform as well as one would want during the later years of his tenure.
Didn't most people around here think we were going to win 8-10 games last year?
I did, I admit it. I thought Grossman would be somewhat serviceable, but woefully wrong on that one. Our WR corp wasn't so great either, compounding the problem. The D was above average to very good, but being on the field too often always will kill a D. |

I don't follow? I thought Denver's defense was pretty inconsistent after Phillips left...Mike just couldn't recapture what Phillips was able to do. |

Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
I was a ten win guy last year and with the way the team started the seaon I thought it was possible. The injuries along the oline killed us early. Then with Trent and Davis getting suspended and all really killed the team. This team is interesting this year, and I honestly don't want to make any predictions. For now excitement is enough but come talk to me in November if we are 5-6, and still it would depend on how the team is playing.
As far as the RG III and Snyder convo at the end of the year well I don't want to speculate on that. If you listen to what the new qb has been saying in the media since we made the trade the. I would assume that if that conversation happened Griffin would at least want two years with the guy. I got a question for you all: Would you extend Shanny's contract if we have an 8-8 or winning season this year knowing that the pay off could be just around the corner? For the record I would. |
Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
i would, for continuity and stability
|
Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
It could be a prophetic question. I think if we're 8-8, given the competition in the division, Mike should get another year. Anything less than .500 and some dissection is necessary. Did poor play-calling put too much pressure on RGIII? Did Garcon make a significant contribution?
And if it's a four win season or worse, Mike and his entourage go immediately, on principle alone. With a legit franchise QB talent finally in the house if you can't motivate this level of talent to be competitive and at least earn five wins you have no business coaching (anymore). |
Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
we could even have a losing record next year and i'd be inclined to keep shanny around. i think he has us headed in the right direction right now. from what this team was 3 years ago to today is mind blowing. finally someone has come in and just blown everything up which is what needed to happen. this team has been a patch and repair mentality for too long and couldn't ever get to the next level. now shanny has gotten rid of all the over the hill over paid and under acheiving players and has gone on a youth movement. he is trying to build this team through the draft and that doesn't happen over night. after his draft last year and the progress this team made, yes we made progress last year, he has earned his right to be here imo. the absolute worst thing this team could do is fire shanny within the next two years. we really need consistancy to continue to keep building a strong core. i haven't been this amped for a season to start in a long time and i don't even think we will finish 8-8. but i would take another losing record and see progress anyday of the week, i'm tired of the quick flash in the pans i want to win and keep winning. HTTR!

Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
In the three years Shanny has been here we have drafted more players than any other team. This year and the next should show us of if this will work. My thought is if they give us a .500 club this year with a rookie qb then we are ahead of the curve and as we move forward we should begin to see great things from our team, and should ensure the staff who brought us back will be around for a while to get us where we all want to go.

Hell, I would be willing to extend the contract and keep the Shanahans on board if they went 6-10 if RGIII was firmly on board and the offense was playing like the Panther's last eason with the introduction of Cam. SHOW ME you are improving and are on the way to becoming contenders, that the system is working and the team is all in, and yes, I would be more than willing to give them more time and keep the continuity, which we have been sorely lacking for more than two decades, going. |

I see us finishing 6-10, but I have hopes that we'll get two more wins and they'll be divisional wins (1-1 with each of our divisional rivals) since we are, on paper at least, more competitive this year against them. If that 6-10 sees a dramatic improvement from our offense with RGIII and the rest of the additions .... if the defense is at least as consistent as last year's ... if we are in the games even if we lose ... then yes, keep the Shanahans. We NEED consistency, we NEED continuity, and despite the offensive woes of the last three years the team is on the right track. |
Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
My thoughts are that if Snyder didn't pursue Manning, and gave up a ton of pics for RGIII, then he has two years MINIMUM.. Again giving what we gave up to get him, Snyder must have agreed that this is going to be a two year, three year deal until we are legit playoff contenders. Now, with our D and possible offensive weapons we could compete for a division title next year.
Excitement may be enough for this year, but not beyond. Cam brought a ton of excitement to Carolina (living in Charlotte I can attest to it). But they are expecting the Panthers to compete for the division this year. There is no talk of still rebuilding. They expect them to win this year. i would venture that will be the same for us. |
Solid reasoning here fanatic. I still think think 8-8 should be our baseline this season, but certainly next year there will be added pressure.
I agree Goat, 8-8 should be the baseline. Our problem was at QB last year and we still had line trouble on both sides of the ball. Not saying our lines sucked, but they have much room for improvement. Just duringthis draft we have severely upgraded ourselves at QB, and I think we have at least one potential starter out of the three hogs we drafted, with one or two good backups. Not sure about the D line though, hopefully this will be dealt with before the season starts. A more agressive D will creat more turnovers and maybe give Robert a bit more of a break in his rookie season. If we only win 8 games with the significant upgrades we have made, something maybe amiss at Redskins Park. If we don't have a division crown by the end of the 2014 season Shanny needs to be shown the door. |

Speaking of exciting. I'm excited to see how Pierre and Josh do in our offense this year. Out of curiosity, what numbers are they going to wear? I ask this because Pierre on his twitter says that he's wearing #15 and josh morgan said to a fan that he was wearing #15...

Re: Is excitement enough in 2012?
Don't know yet. Redskins.com roster says #0 for both.
Hankerson has #85 (Garcon's #) and Paul has #84 (Morgan), so they both have to change. I vote for a camp battle for the number 15! Best guy gets it. |
