Incredible night for US women's gymnastics. Pulled out the team gold after Russia did their best impersonation of the US men's team. The girls did a fantastic job overall

Michael Phelps lost the 200m breast stroke for the for the first time in his Olympic career. He was in the lead all the way until the last 1/2 second when he lost it. He had to settle for the silver. Was disappointed.

Incredible job by the men's relay team for destroying the competition. Lochte, Dwyer, and Berens won this race by giving Phelps a 3+ second lead going into his anchor run. This medal brought Phelps career total to 19 making him the leader in overall medals in Olympic history. Incredible career, and a shame he'll be retiring.

Still impressed as hell with the women's gymnastic teams performance tonight. Remarkable.
The women's gymnastic team was amazing. Their talents are incredible. Did you see that story about Domonique Moceanu and her sister?

The sister she didn't know about that ended up being a legless gymnast? It was incredible in the fact that both of them turned out to be gymnasts. It was indeed a amazing story.

In case others are interested. It's worth the read and watching the video mid-story.

Its just badminton.LMAO

The Badminton World Federation announced its ruling after investigating two teams from South Korea and one each from China and Indonesia. It punished them for ''not using one's best efforts to win a match'' and ''conducting oneself in a manner that is clearly abusive or detrimental to the sport'' in matches Tuesday night.
''We applaud the federation for having taken swift and decisive action,'' IOC spokesman Mark Adams told The Associated Press. ''Such behavior is incompatible with the Olympic values.''
Erick Thohir, the head of Indonesia's Olympic team, told the AP that the Indonesian team will appeal. The BWF said South Korea had also appealed.

Well Moceanu hasn't had such a great relationship with her parents. I don't know all the details but she essentially divorced them before she turned 18. Not sure if the relationship has been mended. I guess they're a difficult crew.

The U.S. Already Had Gold Locked Up After This Floor Disaster From Russia's World Champion, So NBC Didn't Show It To You

I think NBC has done a piss poor job with how they've handled their broadcasts, between now showing the big events during the day to the spoilers that have aired moments before races. I've used the Live Action app on my iPad, and the experience is just ok (no commentary for the events, some of the events desperately need the commentary), just wish they would stream the primetime feed.

They blatently skewed their broadcast last night knowing that the US Women had pretty much secured gold before stepping foot onto the mat for their floor routines.

Re: The 2012 London Summer Olympics Thread

All of the coverage from the net works, internet, sports stations, radio, etc... keep just blabbing out the results before the event is aired. Last night my wife sat down to watch the Olympics as she opened up her lap top MSN had all the results right on their main page. Ruined it for her. I don't care if they want to post the results just warn us first.

SmootSmack 08-01-2012 03:43 PM

Re: The 2012 London Summer Olympics Thread

There are hundreds of camera shots you don't see at any event, I don't really see what the big deal is. What I saw last night (and again this morning) on NBC did show the Russians reacting, just not that exact shot.

Commentary would be great but sometimes that's just not the most cost effective thing to do. Not across the board at least.

I do believe though that more events should have been offered live online. Even if repeated on TV later in the day the ratings still would have been record breaking

I swear to god. Everyone needs to get over it. Seriously. The GD games are on the other side of the earth and the events all take place during the day (here). Get the eff over it people. NBC is damn if they do and damned if they don't. They cannot, no matter how much people would like, reverse the the static effects of the space-time-continuum nor can they stop everyone and their brother from reporting on results. They are a business that has to try and make money. If you didn't know that the women had already won then did it matter that they presented the event in a way to make it more exciting to the viewer? Why does anyone care? They didn't change the results.

Well they probably didn't need to run a promo touting an interview with "gold medal winner Missy Franklin" right before her race. That probably could have been scheduled better.

i care more about the results, than i do about seeing it happen. I certainly dont get upset about it. I dont expect them to keep the results from me. As they shouldnt expect me to have an increased desire to watch the event. It's a fair trade.

My only problem with NBC was their removal of the Brits tribute to those killed recently in a terrorist act. Shows very little class.

Better? Depends on what aspect you are judging it by. The reason I liked London's opening ceremonies so much is because they paid tribute to their history, their cultural, and to their politics. I don't recall seeing China give a nod to communism or to their health care like the Brits did. Visually? I think the Chinese put on a performance that has blown away any other Olympic opening ceremonies I've seen. My favorite part was probably the drummers, which was awe inspiring to say the least.

I don't have a problem with them giving the results just give people a warning or make them click a box before doing so. Its much better to watch when you don't know the results and right now its near impossible to go all day without hearing them.

I agree with you in regards to the badminton players. You gotta send the message that if it ever happens again, you're tossed no question asked. Their sport is going to lose a lot of fans over this, and deservedly so.

On your secondary note, retards = ratings. Say something outlandish and people will pay attention, and discuss it whether they like it or not. That's how retards like that get jobs.

Going back the the US Women's gymnastics team win the other night, and I wanted to share this if you missed it. This was by in far the best vault I've ever witnessed, and how how a judge didn't give this a perfect score. Hands down this should have been given a perfect score, and it was so good it actually dropped a jaw on one of the judges.

Re: The 2012 London Summer Olympics Thread

^^ First, the IOC didn't DQ the badminton competitiors - the World Federation of Badminton (or whatever the umbrella organization for badminton is) did. The IOC "took note" of the Federation's actions and did not contest them. (Sorry, can't find the link but just remember the quote as the IOC's response seemed rather tepid and did not seem to independently condemn the actions).

In the cycling, the cycling umbrella organization said: "It's okay. It's all part of the game." The teams competing against Britain seemed to shrug their shoulders at the tactic and accepted it as part of the cycling rules. The IOC again, did not dispute the findings of the umbrella organization.

It's a tough call to make any distinction and I'm certainly not going to try. Manipulation fo the rules has been around since the beginning of organized competitions. Sometimes it gets called out sometimes not. To me, at these high levels, it's more about the politics w/in the group than an objective application of standards. It's why MJ got the calls in the NBA, why tackling Tom Brady in a game is a suspendable offense, etc. etc.

Again, while I love, admire and am awed by the athleticism on display at the Olympics, I hate the cliquish/subject application of rules to so many of the competitions.

Yes, and Coach K is mad. He said he WAS trying to take it easy on Nigeria...benching starters, no fast breaks in the 4th quarter and trying to pass the ball around and use up the shot clock. He said "we used up the 24 seconds of the shot clock and took one shot, but those shots were just going in."

Carmelo Anthony scored 37 points...in 16 minutes!

Nigeria was just THAT bad.
