The more I think about it the more convinced I am that Wilson gets cut. The cap savings alone....

Wilson, as in Josh Wilson the CB? |

Crawford and Thomas will be sorely missed this year. With Crawford out, our corners will be Hall, Wilson, Biggers, Minnifield, and Amerson. Or maybe we cut Biggers and only carry 4 corners, although that's pretty doubtful. |

I would agree with you if Crawford was healthy. But, sadly, he's needed now. Doesn't his contract expire at the end of this year? |

Wilson may be one of those guys cut after the suspensions run or if/when T. Jackson is reinstated and "rosterized". It would give Amerson, Minnifield time to adjust to regular season game speed while having a serviceable starter opposite Hall. I just don't see us opening the season with Amerson, Minnifield or Biggers opposite Hall. A few games in ... maybe. |

If you plan on cutting wilson I think salary cap dictates it has to be before his salary is guaranteed. Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2 |
Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
I agree -> If done for salary cap purposes, he must be cut before final roster. If he is being retained as a short term insurance policy, then we take the hit and move on when we feel the youngsters can take his spot on the field.
We could cut him, hope he clears waivers and try to resign. Not sure how he would feel about that. Who knows. Tough call that would be a done deal if Crawford still on the roster. |
Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
I say keep Wilson on the roster until next offseason, when his contract expires, then let him sign somewhere else. We need him this season.

Given Crawfords injury, I doubt he is going anywhere now. Just for future reference. After 4 years in the league, the player doesnt get put on waivers. Its an outright cut and he would be free to sign anywhere as a free agent. Saves the vets from having to worry about being claimed somewhere they dont want to be as well as not making them wait a day before starting to negotiate with the other teams. |

^^ Is that true for all season or just for the 75 and 53 cut-down dates?

I thought that was all year, but after checking, I am finding multiple sources saying that is actually up until the trade deadline. After the trade deadline, they are put through waivers regardless of how long they have been in the league. None of the sources are official sources but I did find multiple sources all saying the same thing. Here is one of the sources I found explaining it if you want to check it out. Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
I think Josh Wilson is on the bubble. I wouldn't be surprised if he played a lot in the last preseason game. He seems to still be recovering and it's affecting his play. The only problem with cutting him is the lack of veterans at the position. Not many people seem to know what this really means; it means that the inexperienced player (in this case, db) hasn't seen much to be able to take advantage of an opportunity when the situation presents itself. For example, Rambo's near interception against the Bills. He didn't know what he had until it was too late. The problem with Wilson is - he seems to be recovering and probably couldn't take advantage of an opportunity because of this. Thus the extended playing time in the last preseason game- to provide more film to evaluate if this is the case.

Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
I think Chris Thompson is a lock on the roster because he would be a starter at punt returner and a possible contributor at running back. One of his returns reminded me of Brian Mitchell with the way he caught the punt in full stride.

Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
wilson's not on the bubble. not with crawford on IR.
best cuts from today: S Kenny Phillips (Giants) - injury issues KR/PR Josh Cribbs - knee might be messed up TE Mike Shannahan (Bucs) - yes please! |

Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
Sometimes you have to look deeper at a player's situation. Josh Wilson has a lot of cons against him: he didn't have a good year last year, he's' coming off an injury (which will make him playing better this year less likely), and he hasn't look so good so far this year. The Bills attacked him on the first play and got called for interference. Being called for PI isn't bad, but how badly he played on that play was; if you see where the ball landed, it wasn't really catchable but Wilson played it so badly that the refs had to call it. It was evident that the Redskins were down on him last year, that's why they cut his salary. The Redskins may give him another chance if he doesn't play well against the Bucs by putting him on the PUP list, but this is assuming that someone else doesn't play well while he's gone.
The Redskins best play is to look at the waiver wire and look for a quality cb. Best bets are cuts from the Seahawks or Niners. |
Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
We were desperate enough to bring Hall back at a lower number, so I really don't think Wilson was ever that close to the bubble.
I mean, he was on the bubble in the "if everything goes perfect we save this much salary" way. But realistically, he was never not going to be in the starting lineup. I'm not sure either Hall or Wilson are in the team's long term plans, but the closest thing I've seen to suggest that Wilson was in trouble was when a couple of the guys on the beat (Keim and Campbell) threw his name out there as a potential surprise cut -- only after being asked about surprise cuts, though. We would have kept six corners before we released a starter. |
Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
I don't think we have the luxury of letting a guy like Wilson go.

Re: Predict the 2013 53 Man Opening Day Roster
Pat White fans can rejoice or cry, as he is slated to play the entire game Thursday.
Redskins notes: Pat White gets the start - NFC East Blog - ESPN I say "cry" because my take is that this means that a) they nicely want White to create tape so he might catch on elsewhere b) he's the only QB considered expendable in terms of exposure to possible injury Also note that Carriker was not IR'd for the year and can come back later. |

I hope he does great against Tampa and the jets or bills come to us and say here's a draft pick.

Just making a prediction. Got a feeling that they might feel better with Biggers or Amerson starting on the outside. And maybe they don't cut him outright, but place him on pup. Because right now he's physically not right and its obvious. You can't even trust him in the slot because of the athletic, quick receivers that he'd probably face there, like Cruz. Here's the thing- keeping a veteran that can play well gives you a sense of security, but Wilson didn't even play well enough last season to trust him- let alone him trying to come back from an injury to overcome. And this is just get him to the level of where he was last season, which wasn't good enough. If he doesn't play well against the Bucs then I say they at least put him on pup and go with Amerson or Biggers. Then possibly pick up another corner on the waiver list. And like I said - just a prediction, but if he balls out in this last preseason game, then that makes this discussion irrelevant and it would make everyone happy. Including me. |

He can't go on PUP at this point. |

You have me confused ... Your bold prediction is that Wilson will be cut "IF Wilson play well"? Are you saying (1)If Wilson plays poorly, he WON't be cut; or (2) If Wilson plays well, it is bold to predict his termination? |

That would be sweet. Even a future late rounder; at least we'd get something out of him, besides, of course, all the meaningful and heartwarming Grossman vs. White discussions. :) |
