Here's the deal with Culliver:

He just might be our best CB on the team right now. He had some great years here in SF (especially the SB year)He's had off field issues, the homophobe rant before SB, followed by a torn ACL and a hit and run on a bicyclist the following year. He had a horrible SB after having had a great season which I believe due to the comments he made about gays and media hammering him on SB week.. Last year it was so-so, I would say due to coming back from surgery. Maybe new surroundings, his second year coming back from injury he might rediscover himself. I say he might be better than Maxwell and Thurmond, he can defend and is a great tackler.

Love the other signings, not a big fan of this one at all. Looks like an overpay for a guy with some off the field issues coming off an average year.

Re: Redskins 2015 Signings (and Re-Signings) Thread

NFL.com: Culliver had a strong 2014 after missing the previous season due to an ACL tear. His career arc is still ascending, too, with a marked improvement over each of his first two seasons.

Surprisingly, this past season was his best, though.

Culliver pushed through what is typically a down year for those recovering from a torn ACL. He allowed just half of the passes thrown his way to be caught, according to Pro Football Focus, and surrendered an opposing passer rating of 66.5.

The move continues a -- to quote Around The NFL comrade Chris Wesseling -- surprisingly sensible offseason for Daniel Snyder and his crew in Washington.

Remember, he was coming back from ACL surgery. I've seen this guy shutdown many real good receivers. Hopefully he has matured and a change of scenery might benefit him. Remember the 49ers led the league with players having off field issues. And yes, the off field issues are concerning.

He's a good corner, and compared to the other guys signed, he's alot younger. They aren't going after guys 30 and over.

I think we made a good choice with Culliver...the question becomes will it be: D Hall, Amerson, Breeland or not on roster, he is paired with on the outside.

8 mil per year on the Culliver contract sounds like a lot. Hall for example is 4 years for about 20 mil.

Breeland hands down, Hall in the slot and Amerson just there I guess for now. Maybe they move him to FS

IDK, did he even start for SF? Seems like a lot of a 3rd corner.

Re: Redskins 2015 Signings (and Re-Signings) Thread

The off field stuff bothers me, but let's be real about it: Scot McCloughan is going to be a GM who's willing to give these guys a chance. Especially when they're obviously as talented as Culliver. He's easily better than any corner the 'skins have on their roster right now. From ESPN:

"Culliver's plus-10.8 coverage grade over the final 13 games ranked fifth-best among cornerbacks, and his allowing one catch per 13.3 coverage snaps ranked sixth among cornerbacks with 300-plus coverage snaps. Also, he had a 50.7 percent catch rate on the season."

Again, the guy was recovering from an ACL injury. Being two years removed from the injury now, he could potentially be one of the best corners in the league.

I love the moves Scot McCloughan is making. He's addressing a very horrible defense, outside of Robinson, Kerrigan, and Breeland. He's bringing in guys who are still young, who will be upgrades, but ultimately, these guys will be depth players, because McCloughan is still going to turn to the draft to continue solidifying these positions. I wouldn't doubt if he's drafts heavily on the defensive side of the ball. Things are not going to be fixed in year one, but by McCloughan's third year as GM, this team is going to be dangerous.

Culliver is very very good, for anybody not familiar with him. He's our #1 by far.

Maybe the best thing is for Hall to move to safety at this point. How he recovers from that achilles of course is the key, but it would be amazing if he still has the same burst to drive on the ball at the CB spot.

As a long time 49er fan who has adopted the Redskins as my second team because I moved to Virginia from Southern California, Culliver is hands down better than anyone the Redskins have had in their secondary lately. He has amazing closing speed. Unfortunately he has serious character issues, but nothing that has resulted in a lengthy suspension.

He has made negative comments about gays and women, ran over a bicyclist
then threatened a bystander with brass knuckles while fleeing. Oddly enough he has no issues with drugs or alcohol, so you can't even blame "drunk and stupid" for his behavior. Great corner, but a couple POS as a human being.

Re: Redskins 2015 Signings (and Re-Signings) Thread

With the scarcity of Safeties available in the draft/Free Agency, and our front 7 getting a major face lift the past two weeks, are we prepping for a trade-down Landon Collins pick?

That's sort of the route i've wanted us to go, i'm just not sure if i'm totally sold on Collins.

DREAM SCENARIO: Redskins sign a veteran Free Safety to come in for a couple years and then take Collins around 15 with a trade down, adding more picks later on as well. I'd love to get a ball hawk FS but if it's not there, it's just not there.

Allow Collins to grow as the Strong Safety and get our Ball Hawk next year or the year after.

Any traction to that thought or am I sipping too much Kool-Aid?

I have to believe that Scot will go into the draft with an open mind about either using the #5 pick or trading down. If there is an opportunity to trade the pick, I think that it will come down to the perceived value of each scenario.

I am hearing that the Skins are still in play for Cox who would be our nickel corner.

I would love to add him and Johnson from the Seahawks. If we can pull that kid in and Cox this would be a an A plus free agency for our team.

I doubt we will. The super secret formula would way Orakpo against Knighton and Culliver so far. IF we did I think at best it would be a late 6th.

not a resume for a potential starter

the counter to that is this from Mike Jones at the WashPost
Signed by Seattle as an undrafted free agent out Boise State in 2011, when McCloughan served as a senior personnel executive for the team, Johnson has spent the last four seasons as a backup strong safety to Kam Chancellor, a three-time Pro Bowl pick. The 5-foot-10, 212-pound Johnson also ranked among the Seahawks’ top special teams tacklers.
I would say sitting behind Kam Chancellor would give a bit of a reason for not starting games. I don't know anything about him, but I will ask if he could be any worse than Merriweather?

Maybe he would be backup to D. Hall at safety, if we pick up Cox too and he gets pushed to safety.

we do not need to sign special teams players, 1 pass deflection in 48 games is not what we need.... they may already have strong safeties better than Merriweather
we do not need to sign special teams players, 1 pass deflection in 48 games is not what we need.... they may already have strong safeties better than Merriweather
The point is he was behind Kam Chancellor, who started 46 of those 48 games and was a pro bowler in 2 of those 3 years, and Earl Thomas who started 48 of those 48 games and a pro bowler all 3 years. This is a guy who watched solid safety play, and practiced with a top defensive staff.

Seems like this would be a case of buying low, IF he has the ability. Not saying he does or doesn't but I would not be upset at all if he were brought in at a reasonable price.

And the fact that he was a leading special team tackler, to me, says he understands angles, has speed, and can tackle. Not bad things for a safety to have.

The signing of Chris Culliver all but assures that he will be the starting corner opposite Breeland. If Amerson can't cut it as a nickel back then he doesn't belong in the NFL.

He was signed out of college by Scotty and has had a really strong buzz among twitter insiders for weeks.

I have been hoping we would grab this guy. I hope they don't let him leave town w/out a contract. I think he is a huge under the radar guy who we can get relatively cheap.

Well backed up both Earl Thomas and Cam Chancellor, so playing times was a little hard to come by behind two of the best safeties in the nfl.

Last I checked we don't have a starter at either safety spot... why is everyone not concerned with both spots???
