Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Everything you said was solid right up until you got your facts wrong like a presidential candidate. Robert was not paid 16M to sit on the bench last year, that number represents the salary he'd have this upcoming season if kept on the roster. He was paid somewhere in the neighborhood of 4M to 5M last year under the last year of his rookie deal before the Redskins exercised the option.
That's what we have you for; to keep us straight on the numbers. Anyway, the two sides will settle on about $17MM because that's fair market value for Kirk and a good deal for the Skins as long as he continues to improve. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Agreed, I could easily see it being 18 or 19 too, but who's counting.
I think Cousins has the leverage, the Skins will have to come up more than Cousins will have to come down. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
According to FoxSports.com, the team's initial offer to Cousins was for $12.5 million per year, a number that they bumped up to $15 million after some negotiation.
Are the Redskins lowballing Kirk Cousins with their long-term offers? - CBSSports.com Skins start unreasonably low, mccartney starts unreasonably high .. hopefully they meet in the middle. If the skins started 12.5 and jumped to 15, I imagine their bottom line is 17-18 per. I assume mccartney doesnt want to go below 20, but he has to if he wants a deal done imo. IMO, a deal gets done in the 18 per range .. or he gets franchise tagged. I think the transition tag is just hot air to try and get mccartney under 20. IM just torn personally bc i think he is a 10-15 best QB but he wants to be paid like he is top 5. He hasnt performed long enough to truly say he is top 10 and he hasnt shown he can operate against top 10 defenses. I love Kirk but it seems like kirk loves himself some kirk even more. let Ian Desmond be a reminder to athletes. He turned down 7yrs 107 m 2 years ago, turned down 15.3m QO this offseason .... just signed for 1 yr 8 m. Take the guaranteed money Kirk. Your are not going to produce nearly as well in any other system. |
Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
For anyone unfamiliar with negotiating, it always starts with an unreasonable offer from one side. Then an equally unreasonable counter is made. Then both sides work to hopefully meet somewhere in the middle.
In a case like this, both sides are more valuable to one another than to anyone else. That's why I think a deal will get done. |

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
From the article: "No player in the league did more over the last four weeks of the regular season to help his stock than Cousins, who completed 74% of his passes for nearly 1,200 yards, while posting a 12:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio to go along with a 134.0 quarterback rating. For the season, Cousins thew 29 touchdowns against 11 interceptions, led the league in completion percentage (69.8%), and helped Washington win its first division title since 2012."
Conclusion: This deal gets done. Jay Gruden's offense and Kirk Cousins' skillset are just too good of a match for the deal to not get done. Now, as for the contract amount: Let's see, add 15 plus 19, then divide by 2... Kirk will be paid an average of $17MM per season, which he should be because it is fair for where he ranks among NFL QB's. That would be a good deal for the Skins because Kirk's going to get better. He could end up in the Top 10 of NFL QB's. Also, if I were Kirk, my ego would not allow me to accept one cent less than the Skins paid RGIII to sit on the bench all last season ($16.5MM). I'd bet he and his agent feel the same way.
Agree with everything except the part about the Skins paying RGIII $16.5mm to sit on the bench. He was making rookie scale, last year of contract, much much less than that. $16.5 is what they're not paying by releasing him... Nevermind, should have know that Schneed would get there first... |

Dallas sports talk radio media basically saying Kirk doesn't want to be a redskin and would love to test free agency. Hmmm just them hating on us or truth?

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
If they give him the transition tag then to me it's somewhat of a sign of the same old Redskins. And that would sort of tell me that Snyder and Allen are behind it. That's just my opinion but I still don't trust those two at all when it comes to Cousins. The smart thing to do is franchise him so no other team can talk to your starter. End of discussion.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Whatever else may happen, I firmly believe that the Redskins will not let Kirk walk.

Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G920A using Tapatalk
that's called "wishful thinking" oh man, I just got a flashback of the last game of the regular season where Cousins made the Cowboys starting secondary look like a clown show. I loved when Garcon caught that TD and the Safety and Corner ran into one another in coverage. Jerry's team looked like a high schoolers that day...what an utter embarrassment. Maybe the Dallas Sports talk should focus on that |

Reports are saying he's getting the non exclusive franchise tag.

the right move for now. A deal will get done |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
The fact that it is Non-Exclusive tells me they want him to negotiate some with other teams and set a market so both sides have a proper base to work off of for a long term deal that will be coming before July 15th.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Finally.
Maybe this drama train will derail for a while so we can focus on FA and the draft. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Woodson: Cousins is 'absolutely' overpaid
Darren Woodson believes Redskins QB Kirk Cousins does not have the body of work worthy of the franchise tag, which would put him among the top 10 highest-paid QBs next season. this crap is running on espn. Its like espn and its employees don't understand much about the NFL, how contracts work, how the position of QB works or understand basic premise of "value". |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
I'd agree that $19.9M per season would be overpaying for Cousins based on body of work to date. But the tradeoff is that you aren't committed beyond next year if he turns around and goes in the tank.
Analysts are paid to overreact. $19.9M will not be the final number for Cousins this season, they'll work out a deal sometime over the summer. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Check Bradford's new deal for the definition of overpaid.
|
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Check Bradford's new deal for the definition of overpaid.
I just just going to mention that. He is the definition of average, isn't durable and got 36 million over the next two years. I think that sort of helps set the bar for Cousins if Bradford is getting 18 million a year. Kirk's agent has to see that and is probably or will be asking for more. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Check Bradford's new deal for the definition of overpaid.
So now that they overpaid the shit out of Bradford, very little chance we see a long term deal with Cousins this year. Sam Bradford is the Jeff Fisher of quarterbacks. Mediocre as hell, but continues to get paid a kings ransom and stay employed. |

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
@AndrewBrandt
Some details on Bradford/Eagles deal: of $26M total guarantee, $22M fully guaranteed upon signing. $18M in 2016, up to $20M w/playoff wins. Bradford details continued: $11M signing bonus, $7M salary in 2016. $4M of 2017 salary fully guaranteed, another $4M guaranteed for injury. Bradford gets fully secured $22M, $2M more than Tag w/playoff upside. Eagles get 2nd year option with $4M risk, another $4M if major injury. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
At this point I'm content with letting KC play on the tag this year. If he earns the monster deal next year so be it. It would be a win/win all around.
|
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Eagles really had no choice. What was the alternative? Chase Daniel? QB's that are average...Bradford, Alex Smith, Tannehill and Dalton are all making big money. It's just the way the league is trending. You have to overpay if you have a average starter.
|
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
John Elway said it best. There's no middle class for the QB. You're likely either going to overpay or have a journeyman. (last sentence was mine).
I think the franchise tag is the right call. If Cousins does it 2 years in a row, something the Redskins havent done for a long time, then let's wrap him up for quite a few years. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Quarterbacks almost never get non-exclusive.* I know it is rare for teams to be willing to pay two 1st rounders , but quarterbacks is a different thing. Is it so unlikely that the Texans(22nd pick) or the Broncos(32nd pick) would give a late 1st this year and next to solve their QB problems?
The Skins paid more than that to move up and get RG3. Is there that much Cap savings in the non exclusive tag? *Edit- Once in the last decade and that was Matt Cassel whom the Pats didn't even want to keep just used him as trade bait. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
You either have a QB that can play well enough for you to win or you're picking in the top ten. That's the name of the game in the NFL now. There's no in between. As others have said if not Cousins, then who? It's an odd phenomenon in the NFL...there's really no such thing as average. You're QB can play and you pay him 15-20 a year or he sucks.

no, non exclusive or exclusive, the franchise tag is 19.9m, the transition tag (where he can walk and you get nothing if you don't match another team's deal) is 17.something. |

My understanding is that the exclusive tag would be plus or minus 25.5M, or about 5-6M more. That's what espn980 was saying on the afternoon radio. Sent from my S6 Edge |
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Word is KC will sign the deal pretty quickly, and why the hell wouldn't he?
|
Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread
Im a big KC fan but I do have questions of whether:
1. he can execute against top 10 defenses 2. he can execute wout Jordan Reed If he wants more than 18 mil per, let him play under the tag and prove he is worth the money. Then, in 2017, paying him 25m under the tag isnt too horrible. |

Sent from my S6 Edge
dunno what they were talking about, but exclusive or non exclusive franchise tags are both 19.9m for QBs this year from everything i've seen. next year the price goes up a minimum of 20%, which would be 24m, which is also less than whatever they were discussing. |
