You dont think his reputation alone draws coverage downfield ? Obviously if the lack of deep balls keeps up the opposing d will start thinking twice about it. I still think teams respect his speed/skills enough to send safety help his way several times a game.
Yes but KC/play calling is building a reputation for not throwing to him down field. Jackson has as many TDs as Robert Kelley. We have to find a way to get him the ball downfield. |
Re: Skins lions post game
I actually was at the game, and I thought both teams were very evenly matched. Until the 4th quarter though I thought we were going to lose something liked 24-10. Even when we had a good pass rush on, our D linemen couldn't take Stafford down to save their skins(pun intended). I can't really fault Barry too much on his game plan on the game winning drive as it might have been a result of their lack of tackling skills and the loss of Josh. All in all I can't blame the D at all. Mr. Jones needs to be benched then shown the door after the season or sooner. I also would hope that we might draft another WR. I do not really think we need to hold on to Jackson or Garcon, although I would be inclined to keep Pierre. Outside of Crowder, we really don't have a bona fide WR that is young. I keep cheering for Ross, that maybe he can step it up, but I am not sure he is up to the task. I am thinking Scotty is going to make deals to get more picks next May. We do need some D linemen that can finish and another real CB. These stop gap guys aren't going to get us very far.

I think the loss today could be a good thing. They played well, just made the few mistakes that cost them dearly though. I was worried with all that "We Own the East" stuff. The team gets a little streak going and the guys let it get to their heads. Hopefully this loss woke them up and put some more fire in their belly. |

Ahhh of course....... Im actually a Philadelphia Flyers fan but don't tell anyone. They all root for the Caps..... |
Re: Skins lions post game
Yeah, I wish we could hire Norv as our OC, but the way he left here, I am not sure he would want to come back. If he could make Westbrook and Connell look great, our guys would all be pro bowlers.
Thought CT looked good today. But yeah Kelly needed to be in there at times.
CT did look good today. Great 3rd down back, hand him the ball on occasion to keep the D honest, but he has no business being the feature back in some of those situations today. I hope they give Fat Bob 20-25 carries next week...use Jones to spell him now and then, continue to bring CT in on passing downs. That is the formula... |
Re: Skins lions post game
You can't leave that many points on the field and expect to win against anybody in this league, especially on the road.
|
Re: Skins lions post game
Positives: Pretty much everything apart from the bulletS in our feet.
Negatives: Bullets in our feet... I still have a hard believing we lost that one... D played really well. Playcalling on that last drive was shy, but give Barry some time, he is a young D coordinator, he'll learn, he did at the beginning of the year, learned to bring pressure, gameplan better etc... O played well enough to outscore them... O-line played really good on the running game, pretty good on pass protec apart from a few plays... Add a little bit of murphy's in the mix (that completed pass bouncing of the back of Breeland...) and... How did we lose this one again? |
Re: Skins lions post game
It wasn't Barry's fault at all. It was Jones and Hopkins with 2 brutal mistakes.

tough tough lost but we did have a 4 game winning streak. Every team has games like this. got hope Norman and Trent are ok and just move on.

Classic case of letting a team hang around long enough to bite you in the end.

Re: Skins lions post game
As somebody said, we aren't a bad team, but we certainly aren't one that can overcome turnovers and mistakes. Offense only scoring 3 points in the half is mind boggling. You can't play 3/4 of the game shitty and expect anything good.
I still find Joe Barry inadequate. The man has no balls. Going prevent defense is only going to prevent you from wining. Stick with what has been working and let your players play. Period. I'd rather them get burnt deeped playing their defense than to give up this kind of loss with a "prevent" defense. The sad thing is, he's going to do just enough to keep his job so he's retained next year. Personally, I don't see Gruden or Barry taking us deep in the playoffs. This isn't me advocating Gruden be fired, but he still hasn't shown me much. One of the reasons why Gruden hasn't shown me much is because players like Matt Jones is still playing. Had this been Bill Belichek, Jones would be inactive the next 2-3 weeks and probably moved to third string. You got to have discipline on this team, but it's high time we bench Jones and make him inactive. He's had his many chances, it's time to move on now.
I completely agree with the first three highlighted items. In this league, it's hard for any team to overcome as many turnovers as we had today. The goal line fumble was, by far, the worst. If we had scored there, we might have run them out of their own stadium. I think Barry has done a decent job with the personnel he has to work with but I also wonder if he's going to be able to get us to a championship level on D once we have the horses. I hate the so called "prevent defense" with a purple passion. As you said, it just prevents a team from winning. I never want to see my team play that or a three man rush, which I also passionately hate. I want an aggressive defense. As for Jones, I think he can be salvaged, although I agree that his fumbling earned him a seat on the bench for at least the rest of the Lions game. Fumbling can't be tolerated. It is a killer. He has to fix it and I think he can. Other players have fixed their fumbling problems. Oh, I almost forgot to say that I think Jay Gruden is doing a good job. The players play hard for him and most of them continue to get better at their jobs. We still need more good players and Barry may or may not be the answer as the DC, but Jay is fine in my book. It was a very tough loss yesterday. It happens. Now, it's time to focus on the next game. Play one game at a time. Prepare well, play hard and smart. If Kirk gets on a roll, I think we can beat most of the teams on the rest of our schedule. |
Classic case of letting a team hang around long enough to bite you in the end.
It happens to everyone. I know this is a good young team and getting better every week. If we didn't have those 2 mistakes in the first half, we win that game easy. We beat ourselves and the team knows it. Bengals better be ready for a mad skins team next Sunday. |
Re: Skins lions post game
Glass half full/empty ...We will win games we should not and lose to teams we should beat..BUT thats the NFL today..there will be a lot of 9-7 and 10-6 teams this year. I will take 4-3 after a 0-2 start..we need the cincy game bad!! If Detroit had really beat us down then i would panic..but guys we gave that game away. and with Norman on the field that last drive by the lions most likely would have failed. The major concern I have now is the injuries to the best players we have. I believe Grant gets waived Gruden was mad as hell at him. Jones needs to ride the bench. Kelly looks better to me.Sorry Evilgrin I was posting this and just saw i said the same thing you did..oh well we think a like..
This may be a dumb question but what did Grant do that made Gruden so mad? I know everyone is pissed at him but I must have missed it. |
Re: Skins lions post game
I really don't get what people wanting Barry out are expecting. IMO we haven't seen our D play so hungry in years, and I mean like at least 6 years. They are tackling better, and already improving through the season, run D has been tremendously better than the first 3 weeks.
OK playcalling on that last drive could have been better, but Barry is doing really good things with this personnel. This may not be SB level yet, but he's a young D coord, and showed he was able to learn from his mistakes. No one on earth is gonna turn this D into last year's Broncos' in a week... Firing him would be a HUGE mistake IMO. This is a team sport, confidence and team spirit matter, firing a coach (especially during the course of the season) is a traumatic event for a team, this is not harmless... cuz this is not Madden... |
Re: Skins lions post game
Right. I was wanting his head a few games in, but I really do see some growth and adjustments. This was one of those games where you just felt like ZERO bounces went our way. It sucks and we have to move on. If Norman and Williams are OK, we should have a good shot at the Bengals. They're not as scary as they were before the season started. The one guy I'm really worried about is Breeland. Dude just looks like he is getting worked.
|
Re: Skins lions post game
I just heard Theismann making excuses for the last drive. Basically saying that Barry was hiding the youth and inexperience of the secondary. That he was protecting them since Norman was out. WTF is he talking about? These are professional football players, not 6th graders playing a flag game. I love JT but sometimes I want to smack him.

Re: Skins lions post game
the 2 fumbles and the missed field goal is what loss this game...We got to eliminate these mistakes.
Matt Jones fumble on the 1 yard line was a costly as the Cousins INT in the end zone vs the Cowboys. These 2 plays are the difference between 6-1 and 4-3. Margins are slim, cant turn the ball over, but you certainly cant turn the ball over in the red zone. |
Re: Skins lions post game
Jones is the one I'm done with. After seeing Kelley and Thompson run, I just don't see what Jones gives us the other two do not. I'd love to know the stats on his lost fumbles too, because damn, it's like we NEVER recover his fumbles it feels like.

Even after the fumbles and missed FG, the offense gave the defense a 4 point lead with a minute left. Even the players are bitching about how the defense was called on that last drive. We are not a good zone team. Everyone knows it. Joe Barry coached scared when the game was on the line, but I put it on Gruden cause he's the head coach. |
Re: Skins lions post game
Sure the defense wasn't great the last drive...but overall holding a team to 20 points on the road isn't bad.
We had like 415 yards of offense...25 first downs? or something like that. We should have scored more than 17 points |
Re: Skins lions post game
Yeah I put it mainly on our missed opportunities on offense, the fumbles and the missed FG.

Re: Skins lions post game
In a way I can't fault Joneses fumble in the endzone. He's been challenged by his coach to run like a 230lb RB and not a pussy, his extra effort in trying to score cause the fumble. This will be a lesson to him to just go down, he's not the 1st or last RB to fumble in the endzone due to extra effort.

Re: Skins lions post game
Right guard Brandon Scherff and cornerback Bashaud Breeland also suffered injuries but later returned to the game. Scherff suffered an AC sprain on his left shoulder in the second quarter, but he returned to the game on Washington’s opening drive in the second half despite dealing with soreness.
“The trainers have numbing medicine that they used,” Scherff said. “They just numbed it up, and we were ready to go.” Breeland missed a handful of plays because he tweaked his right ankle in the second half, but he returned to the game on the following drive. He said he rolled his ankle after he was pushed off, but he knew he had to stay in the game when the Redskins had already lost Norman. “I wanted to win the game,” Breeland said. “I don’t like letting my team down. One corner already went down. It’s no room for both of us to go down in that type of game. My mind-set was to play through it.” - Schreff and Bree are tough SOBs. The injuries going forward kinda scare me. Trent Williams has been LP for the first day or two of practice every week (I thought for hip?) but this knee injury could take longer than 2 weeks (London-bye). Josh Norman concussion might mean he will be out for the Bengals game as well. Apparently he left the locker room with sunglasses, fwiw. It appears that Norman has a concussion history - had one last season and missed 2 games in 2014. He might have had more. This article from last year just talks about 2. Re: Skins lions post game
Looks like Gruden is going to start Jones at RB next week. That pretty much kills any faith I have in Gruden as a head coach. Good coaches don't allow this shit to continue as it has with Jones and his fumbling. Good coaches instill discipline and correction within a team. Gruden doesn't have it.

I would imagine that just sitting on the bench wouldn't necessarily help Jones with his ball security issues. However, I doubt Jones sees the same number of snaps or carries the bulk of the workload at RB. Unless Jones drastically improves, this may be come a RB by committee. |
Re: Skins lions post game
Joe Gibbs takes Matt Jones out and he never plays again. He would rather let Chris Baker run the ball, rather than Jones.

Not to mention the fumble on the two was not taking just 3 off the board but potentially 7. We dominated the stat sheet. It does not matter if our d was bad on the last drive or the first drive, they played well enough (on the road) to win. Only stat we didn't dominate was turnovers. That is what sealed the deal. Dude the effort was not 4th and goal from the one. Than you extend your arms. From where Jones was going down , unless his arms were 7 feet long , you do not extend the ball and put it in a vulnerable position. Especially on second down! That is 1000 percent on Jones. Come on man. |
