Re: Redskins vs. Bills (Preseason Game 1) Thread
Diehard I agree with most of your commentary.
I must say some of the most impressive play came from the revamped oline. We have to remember a couple of points about the Bills regarding our run game and the oline play. They are converting to a 3-4 this year as well and that pobably had something to do with the running lanes. As our defense struggled in the first series with the run, and then was able to settle down and make some plays with our new defense, the Bills were not able to make the defensive adjustments we were. The Bills will struggle mightly this year and we need to look to our game against the Ravens next week as our first true test for the oline. If they play as well as they did tonight then I would say that we have something special in that first group. For all the crap I gave Heyer in the offseason, he played a very nice game last night.
Great point about both teams installing a new defensive scheme. Heyer seems to have improved. He'll provide solid depth. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bills (Preseason Game 1) Thread
It seems to have escaped everybody's attention that the defense gave up 146 yds on the ground at an eye-watering average of over 8 yds a pop.
The Ravens will be licking their chops in anticipation.
It didn't escape my attention. Good catch. We need to improve there. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bills (Preseason Game 1) Thread
Yeah, Robinson needs to go. BMW was better at tackle than him. I have been pretty hard on Heyer but he is a legitimate back-up tackle. I think the key to Heyer is his health. He can be decent in a pinch but just can't handle being an every down, every game guy.
My biggest worry about the team right now is that Andre Carter is absolutly useless in pass coverage. Witten will have 300 yards against us if we don't figure that problem out. Orakpo is a cover corner compared to Carter but Orakpo has to be rushing not covering. Orakpo in coverage is a win win for the offense.
Regarding Robinson, I heard that he was going against Maybin late in the game when the Bills put some starters back in. Not a fair matchup if that was the case. But either way, Robinson shouldn't be allowed on the field. I think overall the defense has some issues to iron out. From what we saw last night, looks like the offense has a better grasp at this point. There's plenty of time though. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bills (Preseason Game 1) Thread
With the Bills Offensive line so banged up,the DLine shouldve had a few sacks...Id like to see more pressure in the Baltimore game...
It's my 3rd time watching the game.
Notes regarding the defense: Henson looked solid digesting plays and making plays on the ball. Blades appeared to be lost. Carter may be a liability in pass coverage, most noticeably in the flats. I expect Alexander to get reps with the first team next week to see how he fares. He played well and didn't look like 'a DL trying to play LB'. Riley seems to have been a solid draft pick. He has a nose for the ball. Hall had an INT (Carriker pressure), Tryon had a couple of pass deflections against reserves. Starting defense seemed to settle down after BUFs first scoring drive. The front seven will need every one of these preseason games to iron out assignments and vulnerabilities. Fletcher still impresses after all these years. Haynesworth is a beast. He will make his presence known with the first team next week. Chris Wilson looks to be a natural 3-4 OLB.
Blades is hanging by a thread in my opinion, but we're not that deep at middle linebacker so he probably stays and he can play teams. Carter is a major liability, in my opinion, in pass coverage. We'll have to mask his deficiencies there. If Carriker can stay healthy he's going to be great for our line, but don't expect flashy numbers from him. JoeRedskin wants a Chris Wilson avatar ASAP
The offense: Let's give Beck more time before we mull cutting Brennan. Nonetheless, Grossman looks as if he's been running this offense for a while. He and McNabb made good decisions and used thier feet to convert a first down. McNabb was throwing darts and Cooley has hands of glue! Almost every combination of OL performed well. Oldenburg and William Robinson at OT are a little shaky. An illegal formation on Trent Williams and a false start on Edwin Williams were significant penalties (Trent Williams' negated a 30+ yard play). As much production as Torain had, I liked what I saw from Keiland more. Keiland makes 'something out of nothing'. Again, gaping holes contributed to Torain's stats. Devin Thomas had the third best recieving game behind Cooley and Roydell Williams. Yes, Thomas muffed a KOR and didn't catch a good ball thrown to him but, everything else he did was solid. Dennis Morris DNP. Daryl Young spelled Sellers. Wade's performance was overrated. I recall only one or two catch(es), an equivilant of misses and conversions by defensive pass interference.
Grossman really does seem to like and understand this offense. I prefer Ed Williams at center, but they seem determined to make him a guard. Oldenburg's got to go. Give Capers more playing time at T. Go eff yourself on your Torain critique :) Wade will probably start next week from what I understand, will be interesting to see what he brings. Can't wait to see that Tiger formation with Cooley and Davis on the field together |

other than our run d, good game overall. altho, plenty of things to be tightened up in the next 2 or 3 weeks.

At least we know now because Dallas will kill us if Carter has to cover Witten or any of their runningbacks regularly. |

I kinda feel sorry for the Bills. lol. They sound like us in past yrs.

I used to think if the fans would stop supporting this garbage team and send a message to OBD that maybe things would change. Well, there are too many homers that think every year will be different and support this team blindly. Now that Ralph is at the point where he could drop dead at any moment it is too late, any fan revolt would just be an excuse to ship the team elsewhere. Just sit back and watch the ****show that is the Buffalo Bills. It's this or nothing and once you accept that, it becomes fun to watch again. Re: Redskins vs. Bills (Preseason Game 1) Thread
Thing is Buffalo, is well, Buffalo. It is not as bad as Detroit necessarily, but damn they get worse winters than up here in Motown, plus like any other rust belt city that grew in the modern industrial age, it is in a steady decline. In short, I am not sure that too many marquee players will want to spend more than one contract there. Eventually they will get back to being decent, but it will take awhile. Total rebuilding mode now for the Bills, but there was a ray of hope. Fitzpatrick wasn't that bad, and those RBs had a good outing against us in the second half. Their D sucked though. I just hope that the city doesn't lose the team.

I think our 1st team dominated. Our 2nd team actually doesn't look that bad either. I felt our 3rd string had a major drop off but that might be due to their lack of NFL experience. Buffalo from what I'm hearing now put their 1st stringers back in the game late in the game. I'm just pointing out that the reason they looked half decent might be because of that reason alone. |
Re: Redskins vs. Bills (Preseason Game 1) Thread
Like I said earlier in this thread.. The Bills are the worst team in the NFL and it's not even close.. They might as well move to Toronto because No one will want to play up there. They had a nice run in the early 90s with Marv and the gang but as far as the future goes, it looks pretty bad. I'm still stoked on the way we played because under Zorn we probably would have lost last nights game.

And that is a sad but true assessment. Damn, I'm glad he is outta here, but more than him, Cerrato and Jason "check down" Campbell. (****in' 65% completion percentage my asshole) |

Hey, at least he's got the number for it.
