Re: Let's talk good beer
Just thought I'd mention that for those of you local to the Vienna VA area, I recommend this place and the Beer they brew...

Re: Let's talk good beer
Caboose make some decent beers. They have 2 on tap at MakeOffice in Reston, where my company rents office space.
otm: Nice. I saw Sip land at a few places in DC, but didn't get down to get any. One of the best IPAs in the country. Bar none. Did you happen to get any of the 3 Stars collabs that dropped on Tuesday? Anyone partake in the CBC festivities this past week? Lots of quality beer not usually available in the area floating around... |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Firestone's luptonic no. 6 was pretty dang good.
Sierra Nev beer camp was kinda disappointing. i really liked the tree house offering. Really hope they choose that one to do a second or third production on. Black flag out of columbia md has started canning. their flagship ipa is okay, didnt really enjoy the mamba sauce one. 3 star - i forget if I did. that was a crazy week. soo many collaborations. i think i ended up getting a case of sip o sunshine when it was all said and done. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
I had to stop drinking Tennessee whiskey bout year and half ago. I told myself when I returned I had to grow up with it. Yes, scotch. Nothing else now. I do like blends...and Johnnie Walker black has become my go to. Guy at work...higher pay grade too...got some blue and platinum. Which is good, but damn I like a lil bit in my black. Scotch anyone? What u like?

Re: Let's talk good beer
OTM, you didn't enjoy the 4th in Hermosa beach did you?

lol .... no, it took me a while but I behave like a normal person now.
Parabola - only got 1 bottle this year, so so good. I was trying to "cellar" it for a year to let it get all thick and mealy but couldnt resist. |

Once you get by the initial urge its easy. The hard part is finding the occasion to drink them. I had a 6 pack of 2011 120 minute ipa I stretched out 6 years. Drank one every christmas eve. |

I try not to keep crushable beers in the fridge during the work week to fight the urge (ales, sours, saison etc) and normally can resist the urge on special stouts that I tuck into the out-of-sight corner of my fridge ..... but eventually I cave and end up cracking one open on a random work night. I had this bottle of parabola in the fridge for a few months so i put up a good fight. Bottle of prairie bomb is the last man standing currently. malice by wicked weed going to try this weekend. i really liked their brettanomyces farmhouse w fermented peaches, this one has fermented blood orange, lime zest, chiles. maine's "thank you 2017" - brand new, a red ipa which isnt my fav style but a new beer from maine cant be passed on. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Larimer brewery, i think they are brand new out of Colorado. Rodmans just got their NE Ipa and sour last week.
IPA called "regulators", super fresh, less than 10 days old when i drank it, def a NE type beer, thick, juicy, fruity but the 1st half of the first beer had this odd kinda off putting taste on the back end of it. maybe it was the pineapple but i remember thinking they chose the slightly wrong combo of hops. The more i drank the less i noticed that back end taste. Really good, better than the reviews and ratings ive seen. Sour called l' resistance - really really good but drank more like a gose bc of the salt factor. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Give me your favorite session beer...gotta do some day drinking coming up
|
Re: Let's talk good beer
Session? Hmmmm. You're in Richmond...my normal session beers comes out of Delaware (Mispillion River Reach Around and Space Otter are my normal sessions).
Lagunitas 12th of Never and Founders All Day IPA are 2 good sessions. OB Pinner (which I'm not a fan of) is another good session. FW Easy Jack. Those would be the ones I gravitate to. Not sure what Triple Crossing (Looks like Paranoid Aledroid is ready to roll in cans, as well as some good low ABV beers on tap ) and The Answer has to go. |

Re: Let's talk good beer
Had a sixtle of evolution lot #3 And am a little disappointed.................that no one told me about it sooner. One of my new favs. Wish some of you maryland heads would have told me about it sooner. Haha

Re: Let's talk good beer
Lot 3 is ok. I prefer Nanticoke Nectar to Lot 3 for MD IPAs but Lot 3 is good. I like their DIPA Lot 6.
Made my way to Other Half yesterday on my way to NXT Takeover. Tried 4 different beers and they were all on point. My fave being Double Citra Daydream. If you are in the city and have the time, make your way over there. |

One ledt, I think...and I just happened to have kicked my last one. Looks like it's time to go out and spend some of my hard earned money tomorrow.. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Lot 3 - for whatever reason i just dont try certain breweries until there is a tasting somewhere. Lot 3 and Evolution have good ratings but ive just never pulled the trigger. im gonna try the lot 3 next time. When i am looking for a solid, fresh, crushable MD ipa, I just grab a sixer of 51 rye almost every week.
I tried some new beers: Descheutes The Abyss 2016 reserve - i really enjoyed it. Its just oak barrel aged so there is no bourbon or whiskey influence. The "reserve" version is (I think) an 85 on BA but the regular Abyss is in the 90s. I tried looking up the diff and went to descheutes website but didnt see anything. I am guessing the regular Abyss is blend of 50% oak barrel aged, 8% pinot noir barrel aged, maybe some percent bourbon BA etc ... where as the "reserve" i think is just a blend of 50% of teh oak BA that is left over and non BA abyss stout. Really looking forwarding to trying the regular abyss but the reserve wasnt bad, a little cost inhibitive at $19 for a 22 oz. Founders imperial stout - ive seen this beer on the shelves but just never pulled the trigger. really good, had a few bottles from 2016, very mealy for a stout that wasnt cellared for a few years. thick, really liked it. Like their breakfast stout on steroids wout the oatmeal. petrus sour BA - decent, solid sour. I will be getting it if im looking for a sour and nothing special is on the shelves. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
I opted against the lot 6, And went on a whim with a local brewery to me. Saucony creek. The brew is unicorns riding pogosticks (while eating jelly donuts) .....i couldn't make that up. Really rich creamy ne ipa. Super juicy. Up to this point I'd say it's my favorite beer. Never had anything this hazy. It's ridiculous.

Had to go find it on Untappd since they don't have it listed on their website: https://untappd.com/b/saucony-creek-brewing-company-unicorns-on-pogosticks-eating-jelly-doughnuts/2246131 Looks amazeballs and 2 weeks old (loaded into Untappd 8/16). Sounds like you got a winner. Always nice to find a local place making great beer. Here in Frederick we have several. My fave right now is Attaboy Beer and their Creek Life Pale hopped with Citra. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Saucony creek - brewer is from Russian River and a portion of proceeds go to a water preservation effort. Outside of their regular rotation IPA, i havent seen much else form them in MD.
|
Re: Let's talk good beer
Hardywood brewery last night...forgot how dank he gingerbread stout is...kicked my ass. Great return IPA not bad...little light on the bitterness.
|
Re: Let's talk good beer
Manor Hill IPA - changed the can label to a white background ... but the recipe tastes different/better imo. I didnt find anything on the internet.

New Head Brewer. Had Hidden Hopyard 9 (pretty good) and No Sleeves (turrible) from a release not too long ago. Citra Splendor is also in 12oz cans in regular rotation. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Anybody recommend a Cascade or The Bruery bottle? Ive stayed away bc of price but want to start trying them, just dont know much about them and dont want to make a $20-40 mistake.

Oh, that shit is WAY too smooth. I think it's almost ten percent. I remember we went there and got a growler, came home and split it. Wasted. |

i had like 2 or 3 ipa and felt like i needed a change up. got the gingerbread stout....took a sip and was like ohhhhh that's right...this is a triple IPA/barlywine in a stout costume. i think its over 10%...dangerous level I almost fucked a big gurl cause of it.... |
Re: Let's talk good beer
I do that every night! Hiyo! J/K bae. ;)

Re: Let's talk good beer
eviltwin/jackie Os collab stout called "welcome to the jungle". thin for an "imperial" stout, had a lot going on, chili, honey, tangerine peels and maybe coffee ... it was okay.
montreal brewery dieu du ciel's "peche mortel" -- one of the best available year round stouts that i have had. happy i found a good stout that should be available when ever i want one. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Got to Aslin 2 weeks ago and picked up some of their IPAs and a sour. Very good beer but not sure if its worth the hassle. I found that RAR is just as good if not better and they are the same distance for me. Also RAR does't have a tablespoon of hops in the bottom of the can.

Re: Let's talk good beer
founders breakfast stout is out and about. im loving these 18 pack cans of mosaic promise for 18.99 with canning dates only a few weeks old.

Hop sludge from the fact that they don't cold crash their beers long enough before they can. This is a huge gripe amongst the Aslin buyers. I've traded for some Aslin here and there, but until part of their business model isn't "trusting the process" and seeing that nastiness in the bottom of the can, then they don't need my money. I've done a mixed case of RAR for several months now and they do not disappoint. August's Hyde and Marylan were bangin' (I have some 10 layers but have been saving the stouts), as were September's Slip Ons and Lumber Sexual (Again, I have 1st Meal stouts but they are taking a back seat to the IPAs). The single biggest advantage of RAR and their monthly releases is the ability of buying tickets online and picking up over the course of the weekend, instead of getting up way early and getting in line. Burley Oak has been killing it for months now. Their JREAM beers are incredible, and their IPAs have been awesome. Between Burley and RAR, it's easier to not weep over getting beers from Massachusetts, Vermont and Maine. |

I haven't seen that in almost 20 years. |
