I'm sure Snyder will do anything he can to help Smith and his family right now, but that's a separate thing from the business side of things with the contract.

If the team could get out from under it right now they sure as hell would. Smith doesn't have to be a "nice guy" and concede anything. He's got a contract with significant guarantees for injury. Good for him, this situation is exactly why his agent pushed for that part of the deal.
It was called the Shawn Luavo clause.
Nothing good about this. People can die from post surgical complications, and definitely with infections. I know that's not what you were getting at, but this whole thing sucks way beyond W/Ls & Salary Cap.
Well said.

Sorry if this has been shared already, but an interesting read on Smith’s contract and Redskins options

Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.

The Redskins turned the ball over nine times in their first 10 games... They have turned it over 7 times in the last three games after Alex Smith was lost for the season. They have a minus-5 turnover differential in that span; they were plus-12 in the first 10 games.

The main reason this team has fallen off is Alex Smith, don't talk to me about stats. Dude was a leader and didn't turn the ball over

If Smith had not been hurt I really believe we would be talking legit playoff run..we would have at least 2 more wins .. it’s heartbreaking to see him go through this and I hope he can come back .. Dang this team has horrible luck !

Poor Alex has had to endure like 6 surgeries, I hope he recovers to lead a normal life.

There is no doubt we would be a playoff team, look at the weak NFC right now.

Joe Flacco taking a trip around the beltway to DC next year?

If we end up with Flacco I'll cry. I'd rather watch Josh Johnson go all year.

I'd rather the organization make the decision to draft a quarterback...either Brett Rypien, Tyree Jackson, Will Grier, or Daniel Jones....if the organization is wise they will draft a QB early and late in the draft, trade Colt, and have Alex Smith as the backup.....depending on how long it takes for Smith to go through recovery and rehab.

Re: ALEX SMITH and moving forward.

Draft a QB and get settlement with Alex Smith.

Colt and rookie for a year.

Let Crowder and Preston Smith walk. HaHa too.

Try Apke as a WR. And hoard draft choices

After this year we are going into the next with an already injured quarterback as our back up? No way. Jordan Reed would be starting week 4. I want to see what happens with JJ the rest of the way. Maybe go into next season with him, a draft pick, and Colt. Because like Meks said wtf r we getting for him in a trade? Not even sure about Smith. If he progresses well and still wants to play than throw him in the mix as a third until he is all the way back and ditch either McCoy or JJ.
