We're going to sign at least a couple guys during the f. agency period. It's a question of how much is the danny going to spend. I like this past year's signings as well as 05. In those years we picked up a couple starters but didn't break the bank & try to buy a title.
Well following the 05 season we did break the bank, we went for Adam Archuleta and Brandon Lloyd, in addition to Andre Carter and Antwaan Randle El. They all got $10 million bonuses and only two were worth it. Maybe you meant leading up to the 05 season? But yeah, last year's approach is certainly ideal for this year. And this time last year, we were in a similar situation from a cap standpoint, so I'd imagine the approach will be similar to this offseason. Not much free agent activity, just one or two key moves. |
Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
I definitely see a low key approach to free agency like we saw last year. Yeah, they really don't have a choice due to the cap, but I also think Gibbs has learned some hard lessons in free agency.

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
If we keep Springs, I actually really like our secondary. I say keep Springs one more year, then draft a CB NEXT year. Since LL is looking so good at FS, maybe draft another SS in the later rounds.

As long as we do sign guys with mimimal signing bonuses that is fine with me. I just don't see giving out $8-$10 million dollar signing bonuses (and that is what is going to be required if not more to sign the 3 elite corners mentioned on this thread earlier as well as other high profile free agents) as a prudent move. Free Agency should not be the main method to build the team - use it for a couple of players here and there or better termed "final pieces" but to unload the bank to get most of your front line players is a ticking time bomb. When you sign big name players you have to go through all the contract restructurings in subsequent years to get under the cap and find extra room to sign other players. Plus often you have to let home grown talent (Antonio Pierce comes to mind) go when you don't have enough room to reward your own players. |
See, I like moves like getting London Fletcher. Let's be fiscally responsible for once, use these draft picks to our advantage and make some shrewd decisions in FA and let's get the team under the cap where it can make moves in a couple of years.
I'm with SS, I'd love to get Talib if he's available.
I like this move too. I like the drafting of Blades and let him sit behind the master and take over in few years. This is what we need to do more of. Have quality young guys waiting in the wings. |

THE SKY IS FALLING THE SKY IS FALLING THE SKY IS FALLING
why? Peter King said so. Oh yeah, like every year since FA started. Anyone who quotes that idiot is in need of an internet connection. He has predicted doom and gloom and over the cap every year. Should we sign a bunch of talentless hacks at $10 mil a piece? no could we? yes Unlike in my personal life, my team has more money than brains. Don't worry about the cap with the Danny. Worry more about where the money goes. |

In 05 we signed Rabach, Patten & maybe a couple others to very minimal deals. |

Re: THIS Years Free Agent Class Is Incredible!!
In the interests of addressing the fact that we're $20 million over the cap next year, here's a post I wrote about a month ago in another thread:
I'm going to list the ways to get the cap number down. You can debate the merit of making certain moves on this list, but if we don't cut a certain player, you can bet we'd restructure them, which would also save some money. Expected Roster Cuts: Phillip Daniels - $3.0 million saved Mark Brunell - $3.4 million saved Total Savings for Cuts: $6.4 million Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Base Salary, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract: Randy Thomas - $4.3 million saved Clinton Portis - $3.8 million saved Jon Jansen - $3.7 million saved Chris Samuels - $3.4 million saved Cornelius Griffin - $2.8 million saved Santana Moss - $2.4 million saved Casey Rabach - $1.8 million saved Total Salary Restructure Savings: $22.2 million Keeping These Players, Restructuring 2008 Roster Bonuses, Prorating over Remaining life of Contract: Ladell Betts - $1.7 million saved Clinton Portis - $0.4 million saved Andre Carter - $1.9 million saved Antwaan Randle-El - $1.2 million saved Total Bonus Restructure Savings: $5.2 million So I see ways to reduce our 2008 cap number by about $34 million. So do I think armageddon is coming next year? NO. But I wouldn't go making ALL of the moves I listed above, either. We're starting to push a little too much into the future. And if we get rid of Brandon Lloyd, that move will eat up some more space. Bottom line, we won't have to dismantle the team, but we won't have lots of flexibility, either. We'll need to draft very well. I don't think large free agent moves are in our future.
Got to : skinsfans.com/pcinoz/Cut_Trade_Savings.htm]Cut_Trade_Savings If you cut the following, the cap savings is barely 8 million. Portis Brunell Jansen Lloyd Washington Springs Griffin Daniels Taylor You can cut all of these players, for a total cap savings of 8.175 million and STILL BE 12 million over the cap. If you cut your Starting RB, Starting RT, Starting DE, Starting DT, Starting OLB, and Starting CB, you are still 12 million over the cap. Damn...Good Luck |
I really like Trufant but at this point we have enough talent at CB compared to some other roster spots. We really need to address the offensive and defensive lines this year.
we DO NOT have enough talent at CB at all. this was exposed in the Bears game when Smoot went down and all we had left was Torrence and Eubanks (who were consistantly found out of place) CB is a postition we def. need to look at but id rather NOT spend all our money on ONE good corner |

Bonecrusher,
Just as a heads up, as i see you are new. ANYTHING CrazyCanuck or Schneed10 say about the cap should be treated as law. These two guys know what they are talking about. They keep as good books on our players salaries as anyone but maybe Danny himself. |
