I think A. Carter will get 10 sacks and he should be expected to get that if he plays 16 games. But if we had another top notch or even very good pass rusher on the other side or next to him at DT, he could really shine with about 12 sacks. That said... I like the
E. James pick-up, but would feel alot better, almost giddy even... if we could still somehow get J. Taylor. I would also like to see them add a nice vet at LB, such as
T. Spikes or R. Colvin as insurance for Rocky and M. Washington. Im not really sure if we got the room cap wise but im sure Danny can work something out. If we could somehow add Taylor and either one of those LB's or someone similiar, we are serious very players in the NFC. The only other weakness perhaps would be S, where hopefully one of these 2 rookies they drafted comes through.
from hearing him speak he doesnt sound like he has that fire anymore and this isnt basketball or baseball, you need to be a fired up beast on gameday in football to compete, especially on defense.

our greatest need = a playoff appearance to get zorn and co. started on the right foot and to provide alil hope and indication that he knows were hes taking us.

Definitely WR. We seriously lack depth and talent.

Any word on the rest of our rookies that we havent signed yet? Shouldnt we have them signed before training camp? are they talking now , has anyone heard anything on this?

Overall I would grade our LB depth as a solid C.

Randall Godfrey played well for us when called upon but, if he still has it in him to play he'll probably sign with Greg Williams in JAX. I thought Rian Wallace was a good draft prospect and although he has some playing time (and stats) under his belt with PIT, being released and then re-signed doesn't say they coaches love his game. Matt Sinclair will probably backup an OLB spot at least on Madden 09 since we don't have any other proven guys. I'm cool with giving him a shot. He's paid some dues and made plays on special teams. Blades has filled in for McIntosh on the weak side and hasn't done too bad but, his height can be a liability in coverage.

I would say Safety. Doughty is a solid backup, and thats it. Schweigert is not starting material which is why OAKLAND let him go. and if Oakland doesn't think you're a starter then you suck.

I can't believe you guys are missing the obvious one - we need bodies at wide receiver. I think we need at least two more good wide receivers to feel safe.

We have no depth at long snapper. We've been playing with fire the last few years but if Ethan goes down...we're royally screwed
so randy moss sucks?
Thats not the point. Randy moss has talent but was a character issue which is why they traded him. Scheigert just sucks. Also Wide receiver is definitly not a need. Moss, ARE, MK, and DT that is one hell of a reciving core.

I am with others on this subject...i think we need more depth at cornerback...not sure what the Carlos Rogers' time table is...and possibly more depth at OLB...is Rocky gonna comeback fully healed? And lets all hope that EJ is healthy and the DE's should be good. I think someone else mentioned the drafting of TE in the second round with Calais Campbell still on the board...still baffling to me as well.

Re: What's our greatest need now?

DE,DT/OLB & CB in that order.

Until proven otherwise, E. James is basically like an expensive undrafted fa or 7th round pick (if he makes the team). Daniels is a steady & solid DE, but at his age lacks the speed to get sacks & is injury prone. I would love to see Wilson, Buzbee & Jackson step up big time, but we can't expect any one of those guys to become starting material.

DT; we need at least one more young body to provide depth & build for the future.
OLB; depth is a major concern as MW & RM have both had their health issues.
CB: our best 3 cb's are either injury prone, old or coming off an injury.

I agree with you that our greatest need right now is a CB. If everyone is healthy and 100% we are fine, however Rogers' and Springs' health are major concerns. Springs will also probably not be back next year, based on cap numbers.

C. Campbell's combine numbers were terrible, and much worse than expected. He has "bust" written all over him. How many 6'7" 290 lb DEs that are worth anything fall to the mid-second round, when prior to the combine they were being touted as a 1st round pick.

Hmm, Michael Strahan comes to mind as a large defensive end that fell to the second round...

If we're going to miss, I wouldn't mind missing on a 6'7" 290 lb DE. I hate the combine, all these numbers are an attempt to quantify something that can't be quantified. Those combine drills are just that, drills, who cares that he sucks at the shuttle cone, or doesn't run a 4.5 40 yd dash, or only does 15 reps on the bench press. At 6'7" he's going to knock down passes, at 290 he can be effective against the run, and obviously he played well enough during the season to merit 1st round attention. And long term, we've got a Pro Bowl at TE already, would it have hurt to draft Campbell?
