... I feel ashamed as a human that no one stepped up and helped him.... his poor family.
I think its very easy to look at this situation and state what should have happened. The fact of the matter is these people were on a bus, in their own world. Suddenly a very unexpected, violent act occurred. As a social worker who is quite familiar with both psychological and social theory, I can only assume that the fight or flight response kicked in and people did what they felt they had to to survive. No one on this board was on that bus and can say for sure what emotions and feelings were running through these peoples minds.

I find situations like the older gentleman who was hit by a car in the street in Hartford to be much more troubling.

I agree that as humans we need to look out for one another, but this is a very unique situation, and it must be looked at for what it is. No one could have helped that young man, he never had a chance. The people on that bus are going to need some serious help in getting through this, and judging them for their lack of action is just not something we should be doing.

Funny, but 'we' used to deal with these things far better before the world got all 'touchy-feely'.

I have to believe stepping on a bus with a meat cleaver is "premeditated".

Maybe you aren't old enough to remember a time when, if you got caught acting up as a kid, you'd get belted by the adult neighbor who caught you, THEN you got dragged home to your irate parents who repeated the process.

Now everyone is afraid to even raise their voice to a kid in case they get sued for assault.

It may seem like a minor thing but it's why we have the lack of accountability we currently have, IMO.

I don't get it...what does all of this have to do with a clearly insane and evil guy beheading a young man on a bus?

Death would be letting this guy off easy. Let him rot in solitary confinement.

Burn.

My grandmother and mom talk about those days.

But try that now and watch you end up locked up within 24 hours and I'm somewhat prone to agree with that. That stuff was okay during like 60's, but most of that crazy stuff has been overturned now, thank god.

Some kids are just down right BAD and no amount of beating is going to fix it. Plus I'm sick of parents who beat their kids over everything and in public areas at that and then wonder why their kids are so defiant.

Burn.....riiiight. 'mredskins', you can't even use the quote function correctly, so you're probably ready for a new head-pointer and drool bib.

If you can't connect the dots between the way society was with accountability in the community to the way it is now then the issue may be your perception of the situation.

What discipline do kids face these days? A 'time out'? How's that working out?

'Cause and effect' is better taught with some kind of effect.

I don't get it either. Not to mention the man was an immigrant from China. And, while I don't know for sure, I'm going to make not too far a leap in assuming that the "rules of discipline" remain a bit stronger there than in other parts of the world, including the USA and Canada.
