Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
I hate to say this, but when he made the comment that a rookie will brake your heart after the Buffalo game, I wondered if he was talking about Tryon.
Probably, since someone on this board (I believe) said that Blache had good things to say about drafting Tryon. |
Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
Well, looks like I'm in the minority on Leigh Torrence. I don't see why everybody is so anxious to give him a pass. I saw him get toasted in the Chicago game last year, and now he's getting toasted by second round rookies.
Like I said, none of the nickel/dime corners are stepping up. I only favor Tryon at this point because we spent a 4th round draft choice on him. If he continues his ho-hum performance, oh well ... see ya. |
Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
Just one cautionary note about McMullin:
He has a ton of experience in the West Coast Offense - - in practice. His game performances over his entire career have yet to rise to the level of "mediocre". Is he better than Mix? Maybe. But don't get lathered up about the "treatness that is Mr. McMullin" just yet. He's been a major disappointment wherever he's been so far...
There is no question that McMullen has out-performed Anthony Mix at this point. Has Mix even caught a pass yet? Doesn't matter now because Mix is done. I don't think anyone here is getting "lathered up" about McMullen. In fact, there's no point in getting worked up about him because there won't be any room for him on the roster anyway. I don't see anyone breaking into the Moss/Randle El/Thrash/Thomas/Kelly lineup. Those positions are locked up -- and there won't be a sixth wideout. |

Zorn likes to run 3 and 4 WR sets quite often, so it's reasonable to think he might want the extra depth at WR. Seattle had 6 WRs on their roster last year. So did Green Bay, another WCO team. |
Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
I'm basing that on keeping nine O-linemen, three tight ends, three running backs, two fullbacks, and three QBs. Though I'm not sure who the second FB will be, I can only assume there will be since the WCO is one that heavily utilizes that position. Then there's the possibility that Marcus Mason is too good to ignore and they can't risk putting him on the PS -- so then you have four running backs.
I just don't see how there will be enough room, unless you subtract an O-lineman and/or a TE or FB. |
Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
As of right now we only have 1 FB on the roster and that's Sellers. I'm not sure we need to carry 2 since Rock is also capable of playing there.

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
Here's is my breakdown on how many guy's we may keep at certain positions to make up the final 53 man roster
9-OL You have the starting 5 plus Heyer, Rinehart, Fabini, and Wade? 3- TE Davis, Yoder, and some guy who has 2 C's in his name 3- QB- I belive this is pretty obvious 5- (4 RB & 1 FB) Portis, Betts, Cartwright, and Mason... FB Sellers 6 WR- The five in Moss, ARE, Davis, Thomas, and Thrash (SP teams player) and I do wonder about the 6th (if we keep one the final 53 or not) Offense- 26 players Just in my breakdowns ... Will we keep 26 offensive guys on the 53 man roster? 2- Kickers Suisham, Frost or Brooks? 1-SP Ethan "The Big Red Machine" Albright This would only leave 24 spots for the Defense 4- DE Carter, Taylor, James, Wilson or Evans ( Maybe Jackson with starting James on the PUP list) I can see keeping 5 here with Wilson and Evans being special teamers 4- DT Golston, Montgomery, Golston, and ??? 6- LB Washington, Mcintosh, Fletcher. sinclair, Campbell, and Blades 5- CB Springs, Smoot, Rodgers, and then WHO? I am really having a hard time spotting and quality Depth here 4- S Landry, Doughty, then the last 2 are question marks in my book. could be Fox for his special teams play Is that really enough Defensive guys and enough player to fill special teams squads? I really don't know I would have to say no.. We will have to trim off one or two offensive guys to make the roster work well. Which will mean some tough decisions. |
Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
Art....I think you are forgetting the practice squade for some of the OL, Since Mix is injured I would suggest putting him on PS then allow him to maybe fight for a job later when he's healthy, ....and under DT you put Golston twice unless I'm a moron.lol.
I guess we all will be supprised by some of the cuts. |
Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
With the experience he has in the NFL and with the WCO he should be ahead of others right now. The question in my mind really is the best you'll get out of McMullen and do you want someone who has essentially plateaued or take a chance that someone like Mix has the upside to surpass where McMullen is now, sooner rather than later.
As good a McMullen was in college you have to think that if he ever gets into a good situation with his head on straight he'll be a productive #3 type guy. He seems better mentally now and his position right is hard to beat. Also he is just one of those guys that feels alike a "gut". In other words he just seems like he is going to be a valuable piece for us while the other guys feel like just that "other guys". |
Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
sorry.....also I'm glad we are having the problem as to who to cut vs wondering where we will get decent talent.

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
Well Mix is only out a week but a busted rib for a WR is going to be a problem in terms of performance. They constantly get hit in the mid section.

Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
Everyone seems to be basing their opinions on how players are doing at their positions, but a lot of these guys will have to make it on spec. teams. Mix is a spec. teams ace, don't know if you could get that out of mcmullen. Usually, the no. 4 wr wr has to play teams, that means that 3 wrs might be playing spec. teams if they keep 6.
The o line & fullback depth is likely to be sacrificed for the sake of keeping 6 wr's IMO. We know MIx & Thrash can play teams, maybe Kelly or Thomas will be forced into that action too. I thought Torrence looked good on saturday. The play v. Hardy was tough, got beat by a great pass. He did a good job of turning to run w/Hardy, something he struggled w/last year. Tryon looks like he still has to think about everything too much, he's a long way from earning regular pt, he'd better bust his butt on spec. teams. |

Right, Mix might still have the edge over McMullen based on his age and perceived potential. Should be a good battle to keep an eye on. |
Re: Early Cut list, or Please Get Off My Team
we'll be keeping 9 DL, like we have every year for 5 years now (though 5 de 4 dt is more likely this year, since evans can play dt). 4th dt is lorenzo alexander. des are taylor, carter, james, evans, and probably jackson over wilson.
no way we keep 2 FBs, no one's worth keeping, and rock lost the weight to play FB, but you could shove yoder in there or recall broughton... either way it's not a great situation, but it won't matter whether we keep them or call them up. with 4 possible OL practice squad players (though reinhart will never touch a PS) we can probably go a bit lighter on roster OL (tavares, crummey, brown (IR)). |
